really? I didn't know Cornel and co. had so much pull with the academy! I never heard about that, but it sounds like something that could have happened in the ol' alterna rock daze.

soundgarden was sooo metal, too.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:17 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah the abandonment of Metal was a definite alterna-deal.

God, I remember being really excited when U2 won best alternative album for Zooropa and Bono said that it was ludicrous but they'll continue to "fuck with the mainstream." I was like a lil' Jim DeRogatis at 14 I tells ya.

But this year's selections are fairly awesome! At least way more interesting than a Steely Dan renuion.

maura (maura), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

hey I like that Marilyn Manson song! And I hope the White Stripes win and bitch about being called alternative. We need to reaffirm the 90s are dead.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

any metal category that includes stone sour is automatically downgraded to being lousy. IT IS A RULE

maura (maura), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:23 (twenty years ago) link

There's still "Alternative"? That's funny.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:23 (twenty years ago) link

Fight Test? They couldn't come up with five albums, so they included a Flaming Lips EP anchored by a single from their last album?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:35 (twenty years ago) link

they nominated that Paul McCartney/Super Furry Animals unlistenable collabo for "Best Alternative" awhile back!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:39 (twenty years ago) link

From "Rings"? Didn't McCartney chew carrots on that track, or something? Does that count as a collaboration? I'm probably thinking of something different.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:18 (twenty years ago) link

So, two (arguably two-and-a-half) albums in the AotY category, and all four of the top nomination-getters (6 each for Beyonce, OutKast, Jay-Z, and Pharrell; not to mention 5 for Missy, Eminem, and 50 Cent) are hip-hop.

... does this mean it's dead?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

Haha.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:25 (twenty years ago) link

Warren and Johnny Cash seem to have cancelled each other out for the usual post-mortem accolades.

Cash not only got nominated but actually won a Grammy last year for American IV (despite it actually coming out after the deadline).

Vic Funk, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:31 (twenty years ago) link

I'm kinda surprised by the Outkast nominations, because (I believe) both Speakerboxxx/TLB and Stankonia came out in September (of 2003 and 2000 respectively), but Stankonia didn't get the Grammy nomination until a year and change later, and this one's getting it just a few months later. although I guess it figures since that album brought them the crossover audience that was already expecting the new one. but still, it's weird.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 5 December 2003 04:36 (twenty years ago) link

stankonia came out on halloween

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 December 2003 04:42 (twenty years ago) link

did it? nevermind, then.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 5 December 2003 04:59 (twenty years ago) link

I hope LynnMarie comes up and says "We're not a fucking Polka Group" thus letting us realize we're not in the 1820's.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Saturday, 6 December 2003 14:01 (twenty years ago) link

I was suprised when I heard the "Record of the Year" nominations -- four of the five choices are songs that I would generally leave on the car radio whenever they turned up. Swap out "Where Is The Love," with "In Da Club," as an earlier poster suggested, or "Ignition Remix" or, heck, "Rock Your Body," and the category would be perfect.

As for Fountains of Wayne, it looks like the Academy is fitting them in under that malleable "first recording which establishes the public identity of the artist" language.

John Fredland (jfredland), Saturday, 6 December 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

I cannot accurately express my absolute joy that "Dip Set (Santana's Town)" is now a Grammy-nominated song.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

can i say that i am pleased with mavis staples getting a nod for her work with dylan and am fucking pissed off at the two bit hypocritical fence sitting brad paisley pulling the wool over nashvilles eyes for another year?

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

I can't believe Dave Matthews is nominated for anything at all.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:07 (twenty years ago) link

This slays me. Emphasis mine:

Track from: Masked And Anonymous - Music From The Motion Picture (Various Artists)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

I also like how four out of five tracks in the "Best Male Rap Solo Performance" have exhortations for titles ("Lose Yourself", "Pump It Up", "Stand Up", "Get Busy").
