the walt mink thing (which i agree w/dan they had peaked by that album anyway) is a little more explainable given he was in mpls at that time and if you saw them live in a club they could really tear your head off...in no small part to having one of probably the best rock drummers in the world in a setting where he could really go off (as opposed to his stints with beck, REM, and elliot smith)...so i could see being a little more hyped on them than ppl from the outside would be

yeah they purged stuff earlier than 1999

the purge was especially annoying when that "The People's List" pool of nominations/suggestions was drawn from albums reviewed in their archive and the 90s selections were ridiculously thin compared to the 2000s stuff

some dude, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 22:37 (ten years ago) link

I just remember jjj playing Miss Happiness for me and me sitting there slack-jawed going "uh HOLY SHIT this is great" and him replying "you should see them live, it will DESTROY you"

I tried really hard to make Walt Mink into a thing during college but no one who wasn't from MN seemed to care ;_;

deX! (DJP), Wednesday, 20 November 2013 22:51 (ten years ago) link

i never got to see them at the old 400 Bar before the took the wall out and made it twice as big, i guess those shows were supposed to be pretty nuts

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 20 November 2013 22:57 (ten years ago) link

the first time I saw them was... two years ago at T.T. the Bear's ;_; but they were still awesome ^_^

the face of indie music

For an internet forum populated by pitchfork writers, ilx sure hates pitchfork

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:05 (ten years ago) link

The first issue includes pieces about Van Morrison, Otis Redding, a career-spanning piece on Glenn Danzig, and a feature on the history of the jukebox. There is also a retrospective on the glory days of the U.K. weekly music press by veteran English critic Simon Reynolds.

haha ahhh uh?

Papa Roachford (NickB), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:06 (ten years ago) link

ilx hates a lot of things

Mordy , Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:06 (ten years ago) link

How many pitchfork writers post here

you are kind, I am (waterface), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:06 (ten years ago) link

well let's see, there's l0u1s jagg3r

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:09 (ten years ago) link

Tbh a magazine about Glenn Danzig and Van Morrison sounds pretty awesome

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:12 (ten years ago) link

I like P4k's logic which is "Man lots of people are buying vinyl these days let's publish something that isn't vinyl and cash in on those vinyl sales"

乒乓, Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:13 (ten years ago) link

sounds like mojo tbh

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:13 (ten years ago) link

yeah was going to say, they've obviously noticed that the only magazines still selling are Mojo/Classic Rock/etc

famous for hits! (seandalai), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:14 (ten years ago) link

You can let silly facts get in the way of seeing Direct Hits as one of the most hotly anticipated records of the past 10 years.

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:15 (ten years ago) link

maybe they should put out a vinyl record of their writers reading an article and include a free download of a magazine

you are kind, I am (waterface), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:15 (ten years ago) link

Even more damning is that most of the songs on Direct Hits stopped becoming hits.

you are kind, I am (waterface), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:16 (ten years ago) link

I think it could work, as long as they have reasonable expectations for circulation.

The price is a bit weird...

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:20 (ten years ago) link

They can probably do a lot of "added value" bundling of site and mag ads too

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:21 (ten years ago) link

Taking a look at the webpage for Monocle I don't see much content overlap

But I could see somebody who buys wallpaper or n+1 buying a p4k magazine

Tbf they'd probably take the $19.96 and buy the Arcade Fire on vinyl instead

乒乓, Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:24 (ten years ago) link

wondering if this might be similar in execution to that longform 'journal' thing Loops from a few years back, which cost roughly the same (£13 in the UK iirc), also had SR writing stuff for it, and sold about five copies

screaming lord, such opinion (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:26 (ten years ago) link

Man that jukebox article that I could read on the preview is weak

you are kind, I am (waterface), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:28 (ten years ago) link

Loops was wicked! Admittedly I only ever bought the issues when they were slashed to £3 in HMV etc but loads of great writing in 'em

lol u so catty

i don't really see this magazine thing working out in the long run

marcos, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:07 (ten years ago) link

I see this magazine lasting as long as Altered Zones.

MarkoP, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

yeah, like isn't the thing with pitchfork that everybody reads it but nobody cops to reading it? how's that gonna square up with like, having it on your coffee table or reading it on the subway?

flopson, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link

i like nice, printed magazines like the new arthur and yeti and the los angeles review of books ... i'm sure this will have some cool things in it. still, $20 is pretty pricey.

tylerw, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:52 (ten years ago) link

too pricey to take on the subway that's for sure

Papa Roachford (NickB), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:53 (ten years ago) link

20$/y or 20$ per ish?

flopson, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:58 (ten years ago) link

Single copies will be available for $19.96, in a nod to Pitchfork’s founding year

Papa Roachford (NickB), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:59 (ten years ago) link

yea that's steep

flopson, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:59 (ten years ago) link

but it's special paper!

Papa Roachford (NickB), Thursday, 21 November 2013 18:00 (ten years ago) link

You'll have to store it like you would a porn mag, essentially.

Position Position, Thursday, 21 November 2013 18:00 (ten years ago) link

This seems more about "brand management" than about making money. Plus $1.996 would be too cheap.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 21 November 2013 18:02 (ten years ago) link

Solidifying Pitchfork as "serious music journalism" basically.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 21 November 2013 18:03 (ten years ago) link

so let's cut to the chase here, is it cool to pay 45/yr for a subscription to pfmag, like does it make you cool to do that.

sleepingbag, Thursday, 21 November 2013 18:10 (ten years ago) link

If you want to be cool, I recommend constantly referring to "brand management" in scare quotes.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 21 November 2013 18:11 (ten years ago) link

i do want to be cool particularly because it's important to my personal brand, which is why i have to carefully negotiate the value of brands before deciding to affix my brand to their brand
