Is panda bear the t-pain of animal collective?

aaaanyway, i love thr33 ringz a lot and i think shipley is tripping talking about what he does w/ his guests on the album. i mean the point of them is to be integrated into his "circus" right? none of the guests are outstanding (though i think many like ciara and chris brown are very good) but they don't have to be

Two reasons why I love T-Pain in 2009:

Sophia Fresh's album is gonna be craaaaaaaaazzzzzzzyyyyyyyyyy

Although "Never thought I'd be on a boat" is just about the only funny line in "I'm On a Boat"

I thought that at first but "never thought I'd see the day when a big boat comin' my way" is my favorite part now

yeah, i'm not saying the guests were really a problem on the album (Luda and CB and Kanye and lol Khaled are great on it and "Reality Show" is my favorite song), i just generally prefer the stuff with no guests on the first 2 albums.

the jay-z and kanye part of that doesn't scan to me but i'm sure he's right as it pertains to a bunch of other rappers

nonetheless t-pain is a true national treasure

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 11 February 2014 22:35 (ten years ago) link

yeah, that part was pretty nonsensical considering Frank is on both Yeezus and MCHG (and "Oceans" is supposedly a WTT outtake but still, Jay put it on his new record).

i kinda get the impression that Frank is pointedly only collaborating with the biggest rappers out and the ones in his crew. he's the only new R&B singer in the last few years with a gold album, i'm sure if he wanted to hit the Trey Songz hook singer circuit there'd be more rappers saying yes than no to the offer to collaborate.

the bit from the (same?) recent interview about T-Pain getting invited to 808s & Heartbreak sessions and then getting mocked by Kanye for his ideas was crazy. i can't believe what it would take for a lyric or melody to be considered not good enough for that sloppy-ass album.

My opinion of this article is coloured by the fact that the writer seems to think that Drake picture was deep and not hilarious.

When he says this, once again laughing, I think instantly about the photograph on the cover of Drake’s “Take Care,” which shows the artist sitting glumly in front of a golden goblet, looking painfully aware of how little solace his riches can bring him in his darkest moments.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Tuesday, 18 March 2014 23:12 (ten years ago) link

from the pfork FKA Twigs interview:

Pitchfork: T-Pain recently said in an interview that you’ve changed his life. What’s your relationship like with him?
T: He kept on messaging my label, and it was always really heartfelt, like, “I don’t want anything from you, I just want to talk to you. I’m really interested in your process.” He seemed different. We spoke on the phone and he was really softly spoken. So I thought it'd be cool to go and hang out with T-Pain for the day. I went to the studio with him, and we made some sounds, just playing around. He played me some music, and I played him some music, and I showed him the instruments I work on. He's got a really beautiful voice. He should let people hear that. And he's got a great sensibility for chords. I was quite surprised. He's really musical, he plays piano really, really well. He texts me every now and then to check in and make sure I'm OK. He's always like, "If you ever need anything, just call me.”

I like his voice a ton. He really went south after Thr33 Ringz when he stopped doing the smooth, finger-snap thing and became a desperate shouting lunatic on every track. I tweeted something to that effect about a year ago, and he replied that he actually totally agreed, which was cool, but I haven't heard any new music from him that suggests he's changing course

Evan R, Tuesday, 29 July 2014 16:10 (nine years ago) link

i heard a new track on youtube recently that sounded amazing (very hushed and dark), but can't find it now :(

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 29 July 2014 16:22 (nine years ago) link

T-Pain is on that awkward bubble where he's still a major label presence but has to fight to stay on the radio with the clubbiest and trendiest songs he can manage. If he ever got dropped or gave up on making hits he'd probably start releasing some really great interesting stuff.

this is basically otm. feels like "drankin patna" was maybe the one last gasp of "let's see if we can get a classic t-pain song to pop after 'up down'" but since that caught zero buzz i kind of hesitate to think what his real follow up is gonna be

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 July 2014 16:51 (nine years ago) link

Oh I like that one; never heard it before. I'm surprised by the longevity of "Up Down." He released that nearly a year ago and it's been a steady radio presence all year, but obviously that's more a testament to Mustard than T-Pain. Right now it seems like there's nobody Mustard couldn't score a hit for.
