zagat's list, while otm on some things, doesn't sit right with me for a number of reasons. i feel like, as ILX's sandwich heads, we can improve on it. please state what state you are from (or a state you have spent a lot of time in) and make a case for what sandwich you think best represents it, or just name the best regional sandwich. or w/e.

just to get this out of the way, i do agree that louisiana's sandwich should be the muffaletta.

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 11 November 2013 16:37 (ten years ago) link

God I know that they wanted to avoid naming the cheesesteak for Pennsylvania but they didn't need to challop and name a sub-par B-list sandwich

The Primanti Bros Sandwich is great and should have been picked

乒乓, Monday, 11 November 2013 16:43 (ten years ago) link

the muffaletta is the finest expression of the cold cut sandwch BUT louisiana's perfect sandwich is the oyster po boy. there are more bad muffalettas than bad oyster po boys.

massachusetts is probably the steak bomb i guess

ciderpress, Monday, 11 November 2013 16:58 (ten years ago) link

I think Mississippi's should be the tomato sandwich, on white bread with mayo and eaten over the sink. Barbecue on a hamburger bun with slaw is all-time, but TN and MO arguably have better claims on it than MS.

He got...JACKED UP!!!!! (WilliamC), Monday, 11 November 2013 17:02 (ten years ago) link

see, i would give the fried oyster po-boy to Mississippi and specifically to peter's po-boys in hattiesburg

i think the FBS should be Tennessee's

How many fuckign 50 States/50 Sandwiches lists are there?

The fried catfish sandwich for Arkansas on the last one was "acceptable". Fried bologna on this one is more like, where, in Bentonville or some other Missouriesque place around here?

If I had to nominate one on my own, I'd go with cheese dip. That's some sort of mix of bread and cheese, right?

I was all set to bring a rain of fire on whatever bullshit they picked for Delaware, but seriously Capriotti's Bobbie is fucking AMAZING and I sometimes nearly cry because I live so far away from one. Really any Capriotti's sub. I am actually salivating a little thinking of a Cap's turkey sub with sweet peppers, provolone, onions, pickles, and oil and vinegar.

My secondary nomination for Delaware would be the scrapple sandwich.

I don't actually feel qualified to opine on a signature IL sandwich.

carl agatha, Monday, 11 November 2013 17:58 (ten years ago) link

but i dont want to split hairs w/ who makes the best cheesesteak and shit tbh i dont care, id rather just have a general 1p3 consensus that "the cheesesteak" should be PA's representative sandwich, or whatever sandwich style not even nec the cheesesteak! i don't want this thread to devolve into like "well, x place has the best sandwich in the state" and yes i realize i started us down that path. id rather talk about regional fave sandwiches than restaurants in general, i guess

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 11 November 2013 17:59 (ten years ago) link

scrapple sandwich!!!! <3

You can do these lists with birds or trees, but you can't do state lists on sandwiches, especially for any state that has like more than one town in it.

pplains, Monday, 11 November 2013 18:05 (ten years ago) link

its true, but its still fun to talk about sandwiches and regional food imo

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 11 November 2013 18:06 (ten years ago) link

Here's Missouri's:

A sandwich with Asian flavors that isn’t a banh mi? Count us in. The St. Paul consists of hot egg foo yong smothered in mayonnaise and pickle, topped with lettuce and tomato and served on white bread. Some say that in the 1940s, Chinese immigrants invented this sandwich to attract American eaters to their restaurants. Park Chop Suey founder Steven Yuen is thought to be the creator, so no better place to go than his restaurant in Lafayette Square.

I hear the mayor of Lafayette Square went on to become the governor of St. Louis.

pplains, Monday, 11 November 2013 18:06 (ten years ago) link

i mean really its the same as birds or flowers, imo. all of these things represent regions and not states. neither sandwiches nor biological phenomena are bound by geographical borders

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/youngandhungry/2013/04/22/official-state-status-eludes-marylands-soft-shell-crab-sandwich/

One Maryland state senator is not giving up the fight to make the soft-shell crab sandwich the official state sandwich of Maryland, despite his proposal dying in the legislature earlier this month.

Sen. Richard Colburn, an Eastern Shore Republican, said he is willing to introduce his bill again in the Maryland Senate, where it passed 43-1 in early April, or wait for another version of it to move in the Maryland House of Delegates, which shelved the bill on April 9. Colburn is taking solace in history. "It took about five years to get the state dessert passed," he said. (Maryland's state dessert is the Smith Island cake.)

Silly as it may be, Kelley should know that Maryland is actually somewhat behind on the official-state-food game. More than a dozen states have officially designated edibles, including pastries (Texas: sopaipilla and strudel), cookies (New Mexico: the bizcochito), dessert (South Dakota: kuchen), snacks (Utah: Jell-O; Illinois: popcorn), muffins (New York: apple muffin), and meat pies (Louisiana: Natchitoches meat pie). Maryland is, however, further along than D.C. or Virginia, neither of which has officially designated foods.

If you say "hoagie" in Delaware you will be looked at quizzically or mocked mercilessly as an outlander, depending on how worldly your tormentors are.

Por ejemplo, subs, subs, subs, and subs.

Subs.

Yeah I never went

I always went to Tony Luke's under the bridge. They got real successful and started expanding, franchising. There's one in NJ now. They jumped the shark when they opened at Citizens

I think Jim's is really good even though they have a rep for being for tourists since their biggest branch is on South street
