Was also just told that in addition to the postcard the gift shop also has an ample supply of the product in question.

Based on the A.B. Guthrie, Jr. book?

Looks like it must be. Was on some summer reading list in high school. Wouldn't mind seeing the film, don't know if I can't make it.

On the Greek tip, I either go to no-name places or Kyklades, don't remember how close that is to museum.

sad but kind of fated -- just no way it was going to last as what it was unless someone set aside a fuckton of money for it to stay that way

Finally met Franklin Bruno yesterday- had to go home on an errand in the middle of the day and saw a guy who looked like him in 77 and indeed was him- but didn't know about this development or I might have discussed it with.

hard to argue that it should have had landmark status or anything like people were trying to do. still kind of a bummer. I was staying with a friend who lived on the 7 line in Queens when I first moved here and seeing that building every day when I came around the curve on the elevated part was one of those things that would give me a "you're in fucking NEW YORK now" feeling.

dmr, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 16:05 (ten years ago) link

Yeah it was where the friend I was visiting brought me on the very first day I ever spent in New York.

famous for hits! (seandalai), Wednesday, 20 November 2013 17:41 (ten years ago) link

landmarking it also means you don't get to spraypaint on it anymore

iatee, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 17:43 (ten years ago) link

I thought it was on this thread but I guess it was elsewhere that I said Long Island City feels like New York for people who don't want to feel like they're in New York. I guess the whitewashing of Five Pointz kind of goes with that xp

One of the things I like about where I'm going to live (Yellowstone Blvd. Forest Hills) is that the old basic red brick co-ops and tree-lined streets like 60s or 70s New York, but in a warm glow sesame street sort of way, not in a grimey way.

Yes, it is pretty nice. There is a Latin Jazz trumpeter who lives right over there, maybe you will run into him and impress him with your Ted D stories.

Forever looking for half-decent places that deliver to me, and this one turns out to be pretty good:

Uzbeki Jewish food. Many varieties of Kebab, and they have these giant things called Chebureki, which are almost like oversized wontons

Read a lot of good things about that place...but never been. Vegetarian girlfriend can be a big hassle sometimes. And I don't eat wheat. Not the place for us, sadly!

dan selzer, Monday, 6 January 2014 18:16 (ten years ago) link

love the lamb fat kebabs at that place.

mizzell, Monday, 6 January 2014 18:29 (ten years ago) link

Yeah it was solidly good food with interesting flavors. Probably would have been better eaten there rather than delivered, and also Sunday night usually = meat is not the freshest.

Tried Zenon for greek/cypriot food last night, 31st Ave in Astoria. Very good place, pleasant neighborhoody/family-run kind of vibe, and for $20-25 per person you can get a ridiculous mezze with like 10 salads and 8 kinds of meat (or seafood or whatever). We got the "Cypriot" mezze, and it had pork loin, fried calamari, pork meatball, pork kebab, lamb meatball, sausage, quail, and a bunch of standard cold appetizers like tsatziki, beets, etc. Not quite as good as Kyclades in quality but very good for the money and it was an easy place to be with a toddler.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 10 February 2014 15:54 (ten years ago) link

Had a similar Cypriot mezze feast at Kopiaste Taverna. Very pork heavy, with some sausages the are amongst the best things is ever eaten.

dan selzer, Monday, 10 February 2014 19:32 (ten years ago) link

The pork kebab and pork meatballs were the highlights actually, and everything else was very solid.

IMPORTANT QUEENS FOOD UPDATE

We've been going to Arepas Grill instead of Arepas Cafe because there's a parking lot and it's less crowded than the original location. Initially the food was basically the same, with some more plates, but on my last visit I noticed they're serving cachapas and patacones. The latter is basically the best thing ever. I've had them at a place in Elmhurst and a place in Inwood and this was as good as anywhere. Pork, beef and chicken (or shrimp) and lettuce and tomatoes and ketchup and mayonnaise sandwich with two giant monster tostones instead of bread. A serious gut-buster of the first degree. Add some of their usual hot and green sauce and forget about it (as they say in Brooklyn).

Greg Stone, 57, was also drawn to the youthful vibe of Long Island City. Mr. Stone lived in the New York area until 2007, relocated to Florida, and returned to the city last summer. In early March he moved to a one-bedroom rental in the Maximilian, whose amenities include a gym, a landscaped roof deck and bike storage. He pays about $2,700 a month for his apartment, and was attracted in part by the easy commute to his office in Midtown, where he works as a financial analyst. But as a single man, a powerful lure was the vibrancy of the street life.

In searching for a home, he had ruled out neighborhoods like Forest Hills, Queens — “a grandma place,” as he described it. “I wanted to live someplace younger,” Mr. Stone said. “I liked that the restaurants on Vernon Boulevard aren’t too stuffy, that they’re more casual than the ones you find in older neighborhoods. I like that you see people walking the streets late at night.”

Forest Hills may not be all that hip, but there are definitely a lot of young people there, especially new parents. Even since I've been there it's gotten a little more Park Slope-like, especially the area just north of the Gardens and east of where Nick's Pizza is. My area has a lot of young parents too but it skews a little more russian/chinese/israeli.
