obviously a little biased here as i put it out but "beachcombing" with peter gordon never ceases to take me to strange and bewitching places. i really hope they do another collaboration with him.

i'm still undecided about the album but that's partly because i don't really engage with albums very much. however, "how you say" blows me away and sounds monolithically great on a dancefloor.

"how you say" is the highlight for me too by some distance.

Doran, I was at the quietus show but had to leave just as they started cos of the last train. Really regret it

Not sure what "presets" you get on drum kits, guitars and home built modular synths tbh.

I found the album a bit of a bummer at first. Having been a cheerleader of theirs for a few years, I was pretty underwhelmed initially but I've got to say I love it now. I get the impression that a lot of people I've seen moaning about this album on tQ or DiS or wherever (not here) seem to be disappointed because they didn't turn in some indie friendly dance thing that sounded like F*** Bvttons meets Cut Copy or whatever. This album is pretty severe and works in the same way that a lot of minimal music works... loud, on drugs, on the stereo when you're not doing anything else, in a club, driving... I can't think of a worse album to have on shitty PC speakers at work or in the background while you're doing something else.

However, out of all of my favourite albums of this year so far, this is the one where I have most sympathy with people who hate it. I totally get why they do.

Doran, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

man i pound this album, listen to it all the time

to the point that my bf is like "again? really?"

the tune was space, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:31 (ten years ago) link

That should say "works well in the same settings under the same conditions that a lot of minimal music works well in/under..."

XP: Ha ha ha. Suck it up The Tune's BF.

Can anyone recommend a top 10 tracks?

All of their stuff sounds good to me but

Two Different Ways
Fall Back
How You Say

If you don't like those, give up, imo.

dmr, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link

I think maybe a lot of the vaguely confused handwringing about this album has come about from like 18 months of weird awestruck hype from a certain kind of rock hack. Maybe you have to see them live to appreciate that kind of fervour but it always struck me as over the top. But as a result a lot of people were disappointed with this when it turned out to be "just" a collection of really good Carl Craig rips.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:42 (ten years ago) link

BTW anyone who was hoping this would turn out to be rockier/more EBM might get a lot out of the Gesaffelstein record, which I've been caning alongside this all week.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:45 (ten years ago) link

loved the live clips at the top of the thread. feral, chaotic, hypnotic and cool as hell. disappointed to hear them box it up in such a timid fashion.

I'm looking forward to seeing them live again soon when I guess they may let the noise rip a bit more, but I am not at all disappointed by the album. If you can't hear how it is hard (and clean) I just don't know. Turn it up. Hard and clean. Yum.

this is much better than i gave it credit for. thx kraudive for the listening instructions (LOUD def helps).

Okay seriously they just played a 70+ minute set in support of a 53 minute album. Holy shit.

Wow, what. There are people who don't like this album. There are, in fact, Factory Floor fans who don't like this album? Huh.

Branwell Bell, Sunday, 15 December 2013 09:19 (ten years ago) link

That 'Drone Logic' remix upthread – well, someone else already said 'loud and clean' so I'll just restate that

cardamon, Sunday, 15 December 2013 23:10 (ten years ago) link

I've often wanted something with the intensity of Ministry's The Land of Rape and Honey that wasn't quite so try hard as that (by try-hard I mean, look at the title of the album); something like that, but that just went forward without huffling about in leather jackets and biker beards.

And also I wanted something avoided another pole, that boringness you get in a lot of generic techno and house these days. I mean, I'm sure plenty of things that hit this point exist and it's just me not knowing about them by Factory Floor just hit me as being the perfect improvement of both of these things.

cardamon, Sunday, 15 December 2013 23:14 (ten years ago) link

Came to this band because I like Peter Gordon, but totally blindsided to learn that Nikki Colk wound up there. Always thought KaitO were severely underrated, and in no small part due to her vocals, so glad to see she ended up not disappearing.

dlp9001, Monday, 16 December 2013 15:44 (ten years ago) link

Yes. KaitO were real good.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 16 December 2013 15:55 (ten years ago) link

The tracks don't seem to shine individually but the album as a whole is a great listen.

This has basically nothing to do with Interpol at all and sounds like Factory Floor hitting their Technique period slightly early? It's amazing, tho.

So I got the new one, 25 25. Reminds me of a lot of stuff on the Acid: Can You Jack comp, minimal as fuck (even compared to the first album).

The new Gabe Gurnsey album Diablo is wonderful, from what I've heard so far. Definitely the houseier side of the Factory Floor sound. Lead single Push is a banger.

The Ghost Club, Monday, 10 October 2022 05:17 (one year ago) link

Agree! It feels like New Order/Cabs comfort food, pretty similar to what LoneLady has been doing. The previous one was good, this one is better though I can't decide if I like the vocals or not.
