adjacent neighbours and their kid have gone miraculously quiet this week, hopefully a letter arrived from management co as promised

otoh

immediately after lj sickburned me about drinking from a bottle with a signature on it last night my upstairs neighbour put on his washing machine at 3am for the fourth or fifth time in a fortnight so i went and got bob dylan's chronicles and my big foxford robe and said bottle and went out into the hall up the stairway and lay full length across it so's he'd have to fuckin vault me in case i fell asleep and lay there and drank whiskey and read like that until he exited his flat on his way to work about an hour later and we had the following conversation, my good self opening:

"howaya"

"hi"

"you're, ah, you're up there in number 8". wave towards the door he's just exited, think about moving into a seated position but am comfy.

warily "yeah"

"your, ah, your washing machine, it's on"

warily "yeah. i think so. i'd need to check with my wife."

slug from bottle. "no, god no, don't bother her at this time of the morning. it's on the roof of my bedroom, i can confirm that it's on"

"yeah. yeah, it must be so"

"...must be so. must be so. ah. indeed." another big slug from the bottle. "any chance, any chance of it not going on during the night anymore?"

"yeah. sorry. yeah. of course. i'd need to check with the wife."

business concluded, i get up and shamble off to bed.

idgi. on any number of levels, idgi. but i particularly dg the existence of this tyrannous spouse that is either herself or is by proxy forcing this guy to wash his clothes at 3am. it seems very sinister, and indeed upon mention of her at each juncture during the encounter his lips drew back pale and waxy and a light of anxiety flickered in the depths of his eyes.

what strange lives people lead behind their front doors.

and before other people's front doors it seems

conrad, Thursday, 31 October 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

well granted but that was v much a considered response tbf

midwife christless (darraghmac), Thursday, 31 October 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

no I'm impressed

conrad, Thursday, 31 October 2013 17:29 (ten years ago) link

not as impressed, i'd say, as this fella seemed to be by the wife. i must keep an eye out for her, formidable creature that she seems.

Darragh I could not but help hear and visualise you as Dylan Moran lying there on the landing having at that bloke.

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Friday, 1 November 2013 09:03 (ten years ago) link

midwife christless (darraghmac), Friday, 1 November 2013 09:40 (ten years ago) link

a lot closer to bill bailey i fear

midwife christless (darraghmac), Friday, 1 November 2013 09:40 (ten years ago) link

Cant fuckin believe it, 3am it went on again last night. wtf.

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 12:18 (ten years ago) link

i think i can guess why people do that, from their own point of view, in case you're wondering. obv from the point of view of living in a flat with somebody's bedroom under yr washing machine then there is no permissible reason to do this shit.

. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 12:41 (ten years ago) link

lying in the hallway to make a point seems a bit strange to me though tbf

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 12:57 (ten years ago) link

I was not out to avoid strange, tbh

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 13:00 (ten years ago) link

one of my flatmates occasionally puts on a wash at about 1230 or 1am on a weeknight. drives me bananas. so angry i whisper "for fuck's sake" in the dark.

Powerful

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 13:24 (ten years ago) link

we have students on either side of our house so it can be pretty bad. this years batch are refreshingly quiet though (so far anyway).

subaltern 8 (Michael B), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 13:28 (ten years ago) link

can't you go via the freeholder or whatever? there will probably be covenants for the lease of each flat that forbid this sort of nuisance

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 13:37 (ten years ago) link

yeah i'm just gonna let them know normal style that the next time it happens my landlord will be writing to the management co

but srsly who needs to be asked this once let alone twice

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:16 (ten years ago) link

that could take a while though

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:22 (ten years ago) link

how are you going to ensure compliance in the meantime

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:22 (ten years ago) link

idk man my zany bill murrayesque harmless but nuts tactic was all i gleaned from the mid 90's video documentaries i watched, i don't really have another level cos this dude was big

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:26 (ten years ago) link

moaty moaty it's darragh

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:31 (ten years ago) link

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:36 (ten years ago) link

^b liek i didn't want to type the accent up above cos that's dodge territory but

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:36 (ten years ago) link

ime the people who wash clothes late at night have energy tariffs that discourage daytime electricity use? but yeah british washing machines sound like the apocalypse when they're on the spin cycle and take approx 5 hours to finish a load so it is really not appropriate for an apartment building

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:36 (ten years ago) link

yeah i know and the thought had crossed my mind and srsly i can get with modern day life cycles that have ppl in apts making noise til midnight and up and noisy at 7am (nb, walls are like paper and the water pump alone in each apartment is enough to be heard two apts across- this more than the noise of the machine is the issue tbh) but anything after midnight on a weeknight and tbh i dont care if you're getting it for free you're taking the piss without any comeback

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:42 (ten years ago) link

like im no expert, but is there even a tariff that starts at 3am cos this guy/this guy's tyrant wife?? is like clockwork

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:43 (ten years ago) link

yeah exackly i assumed it's some kind of economy 7 deal but tough shit you live in a flat

. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:43 (ten years ago) link

set timer to start at 3 probly means can take shit out for drying when she gets up without it hanging around in the dryer, starting to think you are a terrible man for interrupting this flawless system

. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:44 (ten years ago) link

i'm pretty sure all those tariffs have a cut-off around 9pm-ish so if saving money IS what they're doing then they are... waiting til 3am because otherwise the noise would disturb them ~>:(

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:45 (ten years ago) link

xpost ah NV that is also a good point

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:46 (ten years ago) link

starting to think you are a terrible man for interrupting this flawless system

see, i worry about this until the 3am grieieicnchchch that signals another load and at that stage i start sharpening implements and reachong for the foxford robe again

midwife christless (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:47 (ten years ago) link

nah i wd be doing the same in your place except i'm a pretty sound sleeper once i can make myself go to sleep

. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:48 (ten years ago) link

im a terrible sleeper and always have been but now that my week revolves around three midweek days that start at 7 and finish at 10pm shit has gotten v v real, up til a few weeks ago i'd have been quite delighted that we were all bumping around our own lil life cubicles at whatever times made us happy tbh

Spanish prosecutors are seeking a 20-month prison sentence for a professional pianist whose former neighbour is suing over alleged noise pollution.

Musician Laia Martin is on trial in Girona after her family's downstairs neighbour, Sonia Bosom, accused her of causing psychological harm.

Prosecutors are also demanding that the 27-year-old be banned from professional piano playing for six months.

A verdict is expected within two weeks.

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Saturday, 16 November 2013 14:40 (ten years ago) link

is yr golem with the washing machine still being a shithead?

iateeogenic illness (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Thursday, 21 November 2013 12:26 (ten years ago) link

someone just needs to invent something that gets rid of sound from between walls. i've seen something that apparently you can stick to a window that uses noise-cancellation technology and blocks out sound from outside. whoever manages to do this for wall-to-wall will be a zillionaire.

all you moaners should just get an air tight balaclava and put it on 24/7 and I don't mean air tight around the earholes

conrad, Thursday, 21 November 2013 12:33 (ten years ago) link

yes but if deems did that we wouldn't have got the deems hallway/whisky tale which is a recent highpoint of a fallow season for ilx

iateeogenic illness (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Thursday, 21 November 2013 12:36 (ten years ago) link

He showers after getting up so the water pump can be noisy enough but nothing else

Some alchemy or other in the logic centre ive been lumbered with accepts showering as reasonable and washing machine as not and ive been sleeping through- tho the noise is prob not significantly less, idk.
