I think I just hate it when songwriters remove the slightest bit of rhythmic interest from vocal lines, like even the rhythm of natural speech patterns is removed, so it just sounds clumsy and awkward. It makes it difficult for me to rate any song that does that.

Matt DC, Thursday, 31 October 2013 11:50 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, there's a weird dead flat to the beat vocal craze going on at the moment. I think Losing You by Solange is the best example of this, it's sung at if it were quantized. If used well this vocal thing can be interesting but it often makes the track feel sterile. Part of the reason that Haim album is so fun is the top line melodies.

OK, I went to listen to this, finally, and saw the title "Heavy Metal Heart" and played that first, and now it's half an hour later and I haven't moved on to the rest of it yet.

"Omanko" has an "OLV 26" vibe

J. Sam, Thursday, 31 October 2013 15:21 (ten years ago) link

there are def rhythmically interesting vocal lines on this album, like on "kristine" in particular

Yeah I can see that. I was thinking Broadcast when I first heard that one, probably explains why it's my favourite song at the moment.

Totally take back what I said about the first five songs sounding a bit throwaway, they've grown on me a lot. This is a great album!

Kitchen Person, Friday, 1 November 2013 03:25 (ten years ago) link

Also did the CD of this get cancelled? Amazon no longer has a release date listed.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 1 November 2013 03:29 (ten years ago) link

i guess vinyl's out of the question too

(emphasis Treeship's) (Treeship), Friday, 1 November 2013 04:41 (ten years ago) link

apparently she said on facebook that she's trying to put out a vinyl version herself? the post was deleted tho so who knows if it will actually happen: http://www.gigwise.com/news/85450/sky-ferreira-to-self-produce-album-vinyls-after-label-refuses

I Will on repeat x 1000

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 2 November 2013 00:01 (ten years ago) link

The CD might be this coming Tuesday if we're lucky- that's the release date for the mp3 version on Amazon, anyway, and I suspect this might just be down to iTunes exclusivity for a week.

Now that I'm listening to this I get quite a strong No Doubt second album vibe from some of this.

It's good!

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 2 November 2013 13:42 (ten years ago) link

a lot of this sounds like some part-sparkly, part-meaty 1990s alterna-album that impresses a lot on first listens but then gets shelved for the duration. some of it sounds quite a bit better than that. i'm probably the 1,000th person to say this but a bunch of the songs are pretty underdeveloped.

been playing "I Blame Myself" over and over and over and over and over and over and over

yep

dyl, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 17:00 (ten years ago) link

i do not like this record even a little bit anymore, aside from "you're not the one" and kinda sorta "i blame myself"

Oh well.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 18:19 (ten years ago) link

I am in the exact same boat as Brad. Altho I semi-like Heavy Metal Heart and Aint Your Right too. Very weak overall, not the kind of sounds I was expecting or wanting. Sad cos Ur Knot Tha 1 is an unparalleled belter.

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 18:26 (ten years ago) link

I think "24 Hours" is the only weak link on here.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 19:04 (ten years ago) link

^ musically, it's def in my wheelhouse, but as a whole it seems really janky and trite.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 19:13 (ten years ago) link

For contrast: I think this is an album-of-the-year candidate.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 19:21 (ten years ago) link

I don't have many candidates, so this would be one of them.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 19:25 (ten years ago) link

Yeah this is up there for me, probably just behind the Goldfrapp album for album of the year.

Don't really think there is a weak link but Ain't Your Right is probably the only song I kind of forget about. My favourite song on here keeps changing but right now it's I Will.

yeah, if you look past the narrative of pop-starlet-goes-rebel, this is idk just a pretty standard idol-worship record... i mean which is fine. but it's way way way way more 'pastiche-y' than the other record to get called pastiche-y this year, haim.

乒乓, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:33 (ten years ago) link

rtc otm about the song lengths. like all of these songs are pretty short and yet still feel overextended

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:42 (ten years ago) link

title track is pointlessly hideous. "i will" successfully reconstructs the aesthetic of the bravery or the stills or something

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:42 (ten years ago) link

What? No. The title track is one of the best.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link

Is that the witch house sounding one?

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:55 (ten years ago) link

idk how you can perceive a song in all of that ~*~*~*~atmosphere~*~*~*~ #twinpeaks

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:57 (ten years ago) link

It makes more sense, like most things, when you're driving on the interstate late at night.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

i do like seeing brad go in on something he doesn't like. this almost never happens!

乒乓, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

spottie too!

乒乓, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 22:02 (ten years ago) link

I dislike the title track too because she sounds better shouting over beats.

"you're not the one" is still one of my least favorite sky singles and while it's fine it's not an album highlight for me. i do love this album tho.

Cousin Slappy, Sunday, 10 November 2013 09:31 (ten years ago) link

man she really can't get enough of twin peaks: fire walk with me, huh? I count six references on this album, starting with the title.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Sunday, 10 November 2013 11:49 (ten years ago) link

I've been listening to this a bunch over the past week and have decidedly mixed feelings about it. It is much more rockin' than I expected, which I enjoy, I like the sonics of the album overall. But I find myself getting worn down by her over-emphatic singing. Her vocals have a tendency to take the songs too far into the Emo zone when I'd prefer it if she went darker. She hits the nail on the head here and there, but mostly I just want her to tone it down a bit. The songs don't seem like they should be sung at the top of your lungs. They need a certain level of disconnection or aloofness to really work.

That being said, I'm clearly not the target demographic for this, so I may be way off base.
