I think Ronaldo will develop into one of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen. The combination of skill, strength, intelligence, and a wonderful attitude to the game he's got mean that only serious injuries (quite likely, unfortunately, he does get kicked a lot) will stop this happening.

Was this a bold prediction in summer 2004? We knew he was good, but I wasn't expecting him to turn out quite so good.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:31 (ten years ago) link

after one season at Utd? Yeah, that's some damn good predicting

Didn't think a rape allegation so substantial could fly under the radar in this climate, but leave that to international sports media.

Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.

The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford.#MUFC

In the last year or so I've seen more people in Ronaldo shirts than ever before, the Al Nassr one. Can spot the blue and yellow a mile off as well

Messi definitely second but still a strong streetview showing

Vini Jr, Schweinsteiger, Dzeko, Neymar, Bellingham, Modric, Mbappe with occasional street sightings

Players being bigger than clubs now, how many does this actually apply to? I've never seen anyone in a Kane or Fernandes shirt

Is Schweinsteiger still playing? Seems like the odd one out.

Also are you implying that Bruno Fernandes is bigger than MAN UTD cos lol he’s not even the most famous player on the team also they are MAN UTD

I can only report on what I've seen! I saw a Schweinsteiger national team shirt the other day. People must wear shirts of retired players too.

I could have picked any Manchester United player, or really most players. I'm definitely not implying Bruno or Kane are bigger than the club, it would appear precisely the opposite. Feels like the variety of shirts is fairly concentrated amongst a handful of players. I've also excluded actual football crowds here, this is purely everyday street sightings

maybe some of the Ronaldo shirts are just worn by fans of REDACTED in general

Ronaldo definitely attracts the biggest (and weirdest) fanboys

ten years of the Ronaldo Messi "debate" really did a number on some of their heads

"Not long ago I had an instructive conversation with a football-mad 10-year-old from Belfast. We were walking by a beautiful lake in Donegal. I’d seen him proudly wearing a Liverpool kit on the dancefloor at our Liverpool-mad friend’s wedding the previous day, so I asked him about the ongoing English league season. As everyone knows, football is “a common language”, particularly for people from different generations or cultural backgrounds who might otherwise struggle to know what to talk about together.

I asked him to name his favourite player (Mohamed Salah) and whether he thought Arsenal would be champions (he was certain they wouldn’t). He asked had I seen Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest goals? I confessed I had not. Ronaldo is smashing all the league records, he said, quoting the latest figures. Yeah, but it’s only the Saudi league, I interrupted. It’s not a proper league, is it? Who cares?

He hesitated and offered a look of sincere puzzlement. Politely but firmly he resumed his recitation of the Al Nassr captain’s many accomplishments in the Saudi Pro League over recent months. I felt he was doing his best to explain the future of football to someone he could see was still attached to a hierarchy that was obviously crumbling."

Fans with attachments to domestic leagues in countries such as Brazil, Argentina, the Netherlands, Belgium or Scotland have seen this sort of thing before. Accelerating in the early 1990s, the successful commercialisation and marketisation to global TV audiences of a small number of powerful leagues led to an increased concentration of talent in England, Spain and Italy, directly at the expense of “smaller” leagues, which were turned into relative backwaters.

Tell me about it.

for whatever reason, based on my posting history, FB suggests these public group postings where Penaldo fans shit on Pessi fans, and vice versa.

the arguments are vicious and often incoherent, such as Penaldo fans bragging about how he has more goals than Messi despite also playing 150 more matches.

I only use these lame nicknames because it's all any of them use. In two years they will forget what their actual names are.
