Were you at least able to sell the record?

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 00:04 (ten years ago) link

I canceled his bid at the last minute and the price dropped from $15.50 to $13.50, there were 4 bidders total so it wasn't a loss.

Afterwards I replied to be more careful in the future and that other sellers on eBay may not be as understanding as I am.

.. or even "around at the time"..

Mark G, Friday, 1 November 2013 09:47 (ten years ago) link

I think I've been in there.

Assuming you don't get the property itself, cos that alone would be worth way in excess of £300k in that location, that seems a little steep. I wonder how much the rent is.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 16:27 (ten years ago) link

The bar in that picture, next door to the shop for sale was an early-days London ILx late night hangout.

Tim, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 16:41 (ten years ago) link

I thought that might be the case!

"If you’re at the stage in your life when you don’t have to worry about making money but can live the bohemian life"

trans. "loss making business for sale: £300k"

Then again, there was an article in this morning's paper about how Edinburgh's Unknown Pleasures has just had its best ever year due to mad Russians paying top dollar for all manner of common as muck 70s vinyl so maybe it's a good time to buy.

I just noticed that and fixed it, after listing 54 items my brain was hurting.

Do you guys place a bid with your top price you'll pay for a record while it has days left? Or do you wait for the last few seconds? I've never don't the former and I'm always surprised by people placing bids by a few dollars, over and over and over. Aside from trying to drive the price up on a record, why bid early?

JacobSanders, Friday, 8 November 2013 19:45 (ten years ago) link

I should have bid a top price early on a Sun Kil Moon album I wanted. But that's only because it ended while I was away and disconnected from the internet.
Can't be bothered with bidding wars on the beach.

Evan, Friday, 8 November 2013 20:41 (ten years ago) link

lol I wondered about that John Hartford cover as well.

Jacob, I am interested in the Augustus Pablo, my ILX email works if you wanna hit me up off-board.

I always bid late. I have no idea if there is any actual point in doing it, but that's what I do.

I never thought Lee Hazlewood & Ann Margret's 'The Cowboy & The Lady' would be the most watched record is my sale?? I haven't even listened to it, I guess I should?

JacobSanders, Monday, 11 November 2013 02:11 (ten years ago) link

If you listen to that one you also have to listen to all the polka.

nickn, Monday, 11 November 2013 06:42 (ten years ago) link

My sale ends starting tomorrow morning, I'm excited to see what happens. These are records from the last three years digging in Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Ohio, Louisiana, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas. I actually had planned to sell 150, but I only ordered 50 record mailers. I don't think I could handle a sale larger than 50 yet.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 14 November 2013 05:39 (ten years ago) link

It's looking my fellowminded japanese will be getting a lot of my records, anyone have tips on what I should charge for combined overseas shipping?

JacobSanders, Thursday, 14 November 2013 16:02 (ten years ago) link

imo taking no profit on int'l shipping means $19 for 1st record + $3.50 per add'l

69, Thursday, 14 November 2013 18:17 (ten years ago) link

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, I put 20 in my postings, so I can recover a little handling/mailers cost.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 14 November 2013 18:21 (ten years ago) link

yeah, i think thats the smart way to go!

69, Thursday, 14 November 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

HA! No one wanted the kiddie Oldfield's the Sallyangie, have to say that was one of the most disappointing records I have ever bought.

scott seward, Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:05 (ten years ago) link

scott seward, Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:05 (ten years ago) link

I suck at selling on ebay, all of the decent private xian records undersold, and the stuff I almost didn't sell did ok. Maybe the market for christian records has busted? I'm planning on putting up 45's, maybe those will do better.

JacobSanders, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:40 (ten years ago) link

re-list stuff that didn't sell.

scott seward, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:08 (ten years ago) link

also, don't hesitate to start things higher. at least make it worth your while. start everything at 9.95 at least. unless you are a constant seller who always has hundreds of records going in auctions it doesn't really pay to start things too low. unless you want to sell lots of records for 5 bucks. sometimes slightly higher prices for harder to find records are actually enticing to people. not TOO high though. unless you have something that EVERYONE wants. then it doesn't matter.

scott seward, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:14 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, it's whatever two people are prepared to pay for it..

Unless you price it high but fairly..

"Why would anyone go through the process of printing a boot cover, pay the extra expense to emboss the cover, only to put legit records inside — doesn’t make sense. Plus, we’d have seen them before. It must be real."
