i am psn, bobbyspirals. i haven't tried to actively find someone not already on my friends list but the crew thing has to help right? i haven't even looked at that since signing up. i notice on the leaderboard that plains has only payed for half an hour total and i am ranked #1, so clearly that is all working well.

payed=played

oh, it separates us into systems - there are only 4 psn dudes and 16 xboxers? for shame.

It says our crew is in the top 3500 at darts, that's got to be worth something right?

Sorry I didn't join you for missions last night goole, was about to eat so didn't want to drop out of single player, but will try to get into some with you at some point.

I switched over from my regular crew to ILGG to see if that would make some of you more visible. When I did, it booted me from my current session to a new one. First voice I heard had a British accent and I was all yep, these are my online pals.

pplains, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 17:20 (ten years ago) link

Not saying that voice was any of yours, but it was kinda funny.

Also kinda funny how members of ILGG have discovered their inner Lunas with their characters.

I'm polyphonique on xbla and on social club.

I found the best mission to grind for money :)

Not very good for storytelling purposes tho

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link

Haha, thanks Albert.

What we need are some Civil War Diaries.

"Dear Margaret,

Today, Gerald had us meet a squadron of bikers down by the shore. As we approached the pier, one member of our mission began firing too soon. This attracted the attention of some bikers we were unaware of who had gathered on a hillside behind us. We were trapped for ten long minutes before one of us somehow made it to the van and picked the rest of us up. However, the member who fired the shots too early didn't make it and another abandoned the mission and hid behind the ferris wheel.

I miss you so much, Margaret. At night on the streetcorner, I can sense the enemy all around me, especially with my map turned on. I have come to depend on picking out clothes at Binco as a way to pass the time. Sometimes, I'll fly a helicopter directly toward the moon even though I know it's impossible to reach.

In time, I will reach you again.

Yours truly,

Pvt. Aloysius G. Campbell"

i've given up on gtav, playing new batman now, only reason i check in here is for the online stories. pplains you should at least blog these gtav stories, some of them are so great. (lilfreely one just brilliant.) don't quite get the ending of crane mission, did crane guy get the briefcase? why was he staring out over the city (and what's speculating mode?)

NI, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 19:07 (ten years ago) link

The whole point of that mission is that there is a briefcase on the 37th floor that Lester wants brought back to his warehouse on the east side. Flying a helicopter to the top and walking down three flights of ramps is much much easier than trying to scale 9/10 of a skyscraper by foot.

So when I died, it took me to speculating mode since there was still a player alive in the mission. It lets you watch from a third-person POV your buddies hopefully finish the mission without you.

But this guy on the crane, I don't know what he was doing. I guess he saw that both me and the other guy had died and decided then and there to go get a Pepsi from the fridge. Probably some kid I'm ripping apart here, but damn. I quit the mission (something frowned upon) instead of waiting around to see what genius move he'd pull next.

I'm not one of those Speak English or Die dudes, but when you're playing a game where folks are prowling around trying to kill each other, not knowing what the chatter is about can be a little frustrating. I mean, they won't even let Scotty Nguyen speak Vietnamese at the poker table, so...

But last night it was ok. I had just done this mission with these three other guys and was just riding with them in a giant 4x4 neon green pick-up. One guy kept falling out of the truck and the driver did this thing where he ramped over a cliff and hit one of the other guys in a car. Guys were in the same crew together and were just cracking up with each other. We split ways at the airfield, but I could still hear them in the helicopter. Somehow, one of the guys was in a car hooked to the cable below and two were flying the chopper, hitting the guy in the car into cliffs Homer vs Springfield Ravine style. Finally, guy who kept falling out of the truck fell out of the chopper. Maybe he was still learning what the triangle button does.

Shit settled down and I found a nice big Hummer to take to Simeon. Usually a 10-minute or so process once you outrun the cops, get it resprayed, drive it out all the way to woop-woop without wrecking it. Only other players on were speaking Spanish. I can pick out a little Spanish, but when it's coming from excitable young men using lots of slang over a little earpiece, it's all Greek to me.

They were on the other side of town though, so I wasn't really worried about them coming after me. The thing I got a kick out of was how they sounded exactly like the three guys in the green truck. I could tell when something was about to go down by the way they'd speed up their talking, start repeating the same thing over and over (tu pendo, tu pendo, tu pendo...) and then something would happen, the earpiece would get distorted with them yelling, some quiet, then one of the guys -- you could tell he was smiling -- kinda laughing and I imagine saying something to his buddies like "Do you believe this shit?"

That part was kinda cool. Like ham radio for the 21st century. But when those white blips start swarming toward me and all I hear is some fuckin' Hebrew, knock that shit off.

hey pplains, i got your friend request thing, but i haven't been playing too much lately, and plus i'm not sure if we can even play on the same server (i have a 360).

last time i did play, though, one of the missions seemed to be a motorcycle race where each team consisted of a driver and a motorcycle companion. only the companion could see the chevrons indicating which way the driver was supposed to go, and the companion was supposed to communicate this to the driver via the headset. i think? i never took the headset out of the plastic bag because i don't want to listen to 8 year olds call me bad names. is there any way to do this mission without a headset?

reckless woo (Z S), Thursday, 31 October 2013 15:52 (ten years ago) link

I'm on Playstation. We're ships in the night, Z.

Surprisingly, the number of kids I've heard on this thing has been low. They were all over the place Saturday afternoon, but late on weeknights, they seem to be tucked away into their little beds.

Last night, I finally heard two guys beginning every sentence with nigga. If that's the first time I've heard that in two solid weeks of playing online, maybe this country's making progress after all.

I go on missions all the time with guys also wearing headsets because I can hear the TV in the background, but we still don't talk. My kind of dudes.

Well, I love the online play. Nothing that's in the post-story world is as fun as the online stuff, imo. But I would recommend completing any missions that you didn't complete. For example, the last few rampages are really fun.

Rode the rails out of town last night. Got bored and shot the engineer. Cops came out and I wound up falling over the front railing, getting killed.

Friend of mine joined online and he's getting into it, calling me at home to ask how an ignition bomb works. He's still learning the ins and outs. We were playing survival, he gets killed and sent to spectate. I hear him in the headset, "Wait is that you, plains? Is that you by the dumpster? Here comes some more bad guys." Meanwhile, keep in mind that there are two other random guys playing with us. It's cool though.

I somehow got a $7K bounty on my head and there were four or five blips outside my apartment, waiting for me. I call him up on the cellphone and tell him to come over and shoot me in the face if he wants some money. I see his blip come around the block (he's a crew member, so it looks different) and park by the other blips. Before I know it, explosions are rocking the building and I keep seeing a black caption card come up that says "E_X-X_shitfinger killed plainspal. Shit! I hear him say. A few moments later, more explosions. "plainspal killed E_X-X_shitfinger." "boyslayer__69 killed plainspal." Goddammit! I hear him say.

It was getting late one night, so we went our seperate ways. He was looking for to buying an apartment with a garage for the first time. I went back to my apartment and watched him on TV. Last I saw of him, he was backing his car up into the garage.

Nice to have him on though.

Not much has been happening lately. I got all pissy last weekend because I stole a car and got a $7K bounty on my head. If you can stay alive for 48 real-time minutes, you get paid the bounty yourself. I got $9K the day before by jumping into a submarine and sitting on the bottom of the ocean for nearly an hour. This little French boy kept trying to shoot me from a helicopter, bullets leaving trails in the water like the first scenes of Saving Private Ryan. But I survived.

This time, I decided to go across the street and climb halfway up the crane in the construction site. Still within the bowels of the building so no helicopters could get me, far enough up to avoid getting shot from the ground, and if anyone tried to climb up, there I'd be, right at the top of the ladder with my barrel pointed down.

Worked for a little bit. Two blips show up on the map. "Nuh he somewhere up in that tower," one of them whispered. I cycled through my weapons and got ready.

Then more blips showed up from the other side and triggered a gang attack with the actual game itself. So now I've got players and computer-generated gangsters firing their guns off and guess what, some of those bullets can indeed travel the 60-70 feet up where I'm at. I start lobbing grenades off of the platform I'm on, hoping to if not kill, then scare away any of the players.

Somewhere in all the excitement, one of those blips made it up the ladder and was now on the platform, aiming his assault rifle at me. I run toward him, getting so close that instead of being able to shoot me, he punches me (which isn't quite as fatal.) I back up, take my shot, forget that I still have grenades on my wheel, hit him in the chest with a pineapple and we both blow up.

When I respawn, I'm back on the ground. Not only that, but somehow I've become an official participant of this gang attack. And before I know it, all the bad guys have been killed, everything goes sepia, schwing/slam MISSION PASSED +150 RP, freeze-frame.

I'm still standing there when the game returns, blip comes up behind me with a headshot, I go down and I hear in my headphones "Seven thou, nigga." That's when it occurs to me that it's 2 am, I'm 40 years old and I've got family visiting me the next day. Fuck this shit.

But I wasn't gone long. Like I said, been playing with my friend. He told me that he read online that when you get a bounty put on you, the game will let you wait it out in your apartment, out of harm's way.

pplains, Friday, 22 November 2013 15:28 (ten years ago) link

I'm totally gonna do this.

I get such a kick out of the online game, even though I'm not on so often, and I am pretty much garbage at video games. The other day a guy got a $7k bounty on his head near me, and I tracked him down and fucked up his car on a two lane blacktop. We both exited out vehicles, which was dumb because I am not good at the shooting - I shot him once but he got two shots at me and I was pretty close to dying, when a car came from nowhere and knocked him over, letting me finish him. It was such a fantastic moment.

the "Weird Al" Yankovic of country music (stevie), Friday, 22 November 2013 15:34 (ten years ago) link

There's an apartment in the lower hills of Vinewood that has an unrelated parking garage near it. You enter from the top and there's one lane that curves down to the exit. Inside there's this corner where you can back up and see anything first that comes toward you. The cool part is that on the map, it looks like you're in the apartment or standing on its roof or something.

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 22 November 2013 15:56 (ten years ago) link

I love co-cop missions but my ardour for them is complicated by the knowledge that I am generally the weakest link in the team. i did the mission where you steal a helicopter and squandered all of my team's spare lives getting shot while my team-mates killed their way to the chopper, respawned just next to it as they were taking off and scored an equal amount of points for essentially dragging them down.
