listening to this for the first time after downloading it from itunes. "Boys" is pretty good. i like the heaviness of it a lot.

itunes censored the album cover which isn't a big deal except she is pretty touchy about larger forces messing with her shit. if i was itunes i would have backed off and let her do what she wanted.

why has no one posted nabisco's article about her

nabisco's article is great
i just finished my first listen and i... have mixed feelings? i am def compelled to listen more tho
― dyl, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 04:48 (ten years ago) link
so far i am in love with this but i can't trust myself, because everything i've listened to tonight has sounded amazing. is there a thread about that kind of mood?
― (emphasis Treeship's) (Treeship), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 05:05 (ten years ago) link
thumbs up imo
didnt find it partic dark, nor beyond 'you're not the one' did i srsly feel the teen rock pathos in my bones or anything, just damn good cherry pie basically
within a fortnight i will probably be appropriately semi-bored about it
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 08:19 (ten years ago) link
i guess the earnestness of her lifelong struggle to make this super quotidian post-teen angst record is fairly disarming, like ordinarily i might have just thrown it in the haim bonfire if it was anyone fresh n cute up in my grill
anyone really buying into the personal narrative here is a halfwit or at worst a creep though, this record is from the saturday girl behind the topshop till serving sky's stylist more so than she herself
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 08:41 (ten years ago) link
case in point, 'nobody asked me (if i was okay)' is way way way better once you get past the butthurt reading and instead pick up the triumphant vibe like it was a less eloquent/mordant 'ain't it fun', which it is
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 08:55 (ten years ago) link
compared to "you're not the one" the rest of this seems like half-composed synth pop

I really liked "Everything is Embarrassing" but the 'RIYL Haim, Lorde, Salem's TMZ tendencies' appeal of all of this sorta makes me wanna wretch

They put together some of these tracks very quickly, so "half-composed" and "under-composed" are definitely ... potential drawbacks. But part of what I like about the album is the way it can accommodate those loose, unfussy tracks -- songs like "Kristine," the ones that feel like they're just delighted to be able to hang around in their happy private space making noise and cooing to themselves.
i guess the earnestness of her lifelong struggle to make this super quotidian post-teen angst record is fairly disarming
The thing I find interesting about the whole narrative behind her isn't some cheerleading "girl against the industry" thing -- it's that she winds up with an experience that connects so perfectly with certain types of quotidian teen angst! I mean: feeling controlled, feeling like nobody takes you seriously, feeling like your peers all gossip about you, having people think your boyfriend may be bad news ... it's like central-casting young-person issues blown up to IMAX scale, or at least Sofia Coppola film scale. And she seems very young and self-dramatizing about it in a way that's considered uncool and messy for people in the public eye, but gives the music a lot more passion, I think.

it is a v pleasant synth pop album, parts of which seem intentionally broken
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 16:27 (ten years ago) link
this witchhouse synthpop biz is being overstated a tad i think, doesnt it really just sound like hole or whatever (nb i have never heard a hole album)

another...15 minutes should do it

The weirdest resemblance on this is how much "Love in Stereo" sounds like the Blow, to the point where I initially thought it might be a co-write / co-vocal

Also this "music" she creates "blows*."

She’s pale and chic, with choppy dyed-blonde hair and sullen glowering eyes, and just overall seems like she should be smoking a cigarette behind the gym of a high school circa 1994.
lol

so sullen <33333
really great and interesting piece n1tsuh too!
aahhhhh which 90s grunge girl is she reminding me of? it's not QUITE courtney, there's more ennui than rip-your-throat-out rage. there's definitely someone though

I'm liking the aesthetic here, I've never paid much attention before but it's like she's taking generic Austra-like gothy synthpop and slathering it with grunge surliness.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:00 (ten years ago) link
bubblegrunge, that was a thing right

The reference points being flung around make me very excited to hear this.
A friend on Facebook said Live Through This meets Erotica but surely it can't be THAT good.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:05 (ten years ago) link
rtc have you really not heard Celebrity Skin? It's like the year zero for a certain kind of sound that ends up with Ashlees and Paramores and what have you.
This isn't actually that much like any iteration of Hole though.

Celebrity Skin is essential definitely.

xp "Red Lips" was a Shirley Manson co-write, so Sky may have carried over a little from their collaboration.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:14 (ten years ago) link
i was thinking shirley but i dunno not quiiiiiiite not quite, less steely and droidy
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link
like this is is a pretty fuzzy album, not all sharp sheen like garbage
only heard the sleb skin singles iirc
tbh in this field i quite enjoy being otm on minimal expertise so i don't really wanna start rocking the boat doing proper research now

this sounds like every '90s album I've bought used and loved that never made it to spotify or reissues (this is about the highest compliment I can bestow)
― katherine, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:19 (ten years ago) link
Lex, without having heard it yet, your description sounds a bit like early Veruca Salt?
― Tim F, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:19 (ten years ago) link
er, to clarify, this is about the highest compliment any album could possibly get from me, not "meh, that's as positive as I can get"
― katherine, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:21 (ten years ago) link

veruca salt is too much ennui i think
idk lex, tender shirley not avenging angel shirley though? (and def tude not sound)
