There's this guy in one my crews, lilfreely, who's just his own man when it comes to freemode. Usually when you're in a crew, you look out for each other, but lilfreely's just out to have fun, I guess.

His wardrobe is currently a green lizard face and a white cowboy hat with nothing else. He pulls up next to me after I appear on the board, jumps on top of his car. I get out to see what he's doing and he leaps off and punches me in the face. Then he gets back into his car and takes off. I follow him.

We get to some apartment building and he disappears. I park down a ramp toward the garage and go look for the apartment door. While I'm gone, I see this white dot appear - a noncrew member. I creep back around to the street entrance of the ramp just in time to see some random person trying to take off with my car. I shoot them up pretty good. When they reappear, they come after me and I shoot them again. The cops start coming for me, so I peel away.

After driving damn near to the east side and losing my wanted level, I check the map and see that lilfreely is chasing down the some random player that stole my car down by Vespucci Beach. I take off down there, and not only is he chasing her, he's somehow got one of those giant 25-foot tall dump trucks you usually only see at the quarry. She jumps out of her car and he runs over it. It explodes. Her crew shows up, and one guy jumps up the ladder and pulls lilfreely out. We're on the beach now with lots of room, so I try to throw a sticky bomb onto the truck and miss. It just lands on the ground by the water.

First random player now has a four wheeler and guns it for lilfreely who somehow jumps up and lands a punch just as the four-wheeler knocks him back on to the sand. Guy who stole the truck has abandoned it to go get his own four wheeler so I jump up there. I drive it down by the water and park the front of it right over the sticky bomb I can't pick up. I get out and start throwing fists.

Player who stole my car now runs over to the dump truck to steal that. I've been waiting for this. She climbs up the ladder and right as she's about to get in, BLAM, I trigger the sticky bomb. It's real stiff how her body flies over the beach and into the ocean, no rag doll stuff, but I'm impressed with myself. lilfreely comes up beside me and we stand there looking at his dump truck burn. He turns to me and starts punching me again.

I get away, but my health is depleted. I never even see the car thief respawn and hit me over the head with a cro bar. That's when I finally die as she runs back toward my car, which thankfully, I've learned to lock.

i just started playing the online at the weekend and locking my car would have been v handy. how do i shot?

On PSN, you have to hold down the select button. If you just push it, all you do is change the camera angle. But hold it down and a menu will appear with all sorts of neat stuff like who can access your car, what kind of mood is on your face, what's your gesture when you press both L3 and R3 and more.

Can you permanently steal someone's car? I stole a guys car while he was in the liquor store and it was p dope but I didn't have a garage yet. also was it dumb to get a two car instead of saving for a six car?

I played this last night, crashed my jet three seconds in, and twenty seconds before the other jet. not a success.

I don't think you can steal another player's car?

A.) Your car is insured and has a tracker, so you're going to see it on the map.

B.) That same menu from the select button has a neat function called "Empty your car". You push the button and everyone in your car gets out.

C.) Personal experience: I was riding with another player in his car when he parks and decides right there to join a mission. He disappears and I'm like Kirk Cameron, left behind in the hell world of freemode. I'm able to drive his car around for a bit, but then the car eventually stops and my guy gets out. When I try to get back into the car, it says I don't have permission.

So there's that.

i can see how this wd be fun but i can't get people to stick around in missions that seem like a blast (like that plane vs bike one! so cool). and i find big groups of people repeatedly doing the most boring shit (like the circle lap race around the prison). i guess they're farming money, maybe? idk.

now that i say that, do we have to be xbox friends, or r* social club friends, or what?

i watched my friend play online and it just seems like idk battlefield 1942 or halo w/ much shittier shooting

yeah, as a pure anything it's not great: there are better shooters, better racers, etc. but this is all everything together. there are probably better whore picker upper games out there too.

I get in my farm modes like racing around the prison or doing the downtown underground race where you can even earn RP by jumping from the overpass in fine form. But usually everyone's also into the mindlessness of it. If we get to the choose-your-next-adventure screen and someone wants to try a mission or something, I'm usually ok with that too.

There's one mission that's really difficult, but really fun to play. Lester tells you he needs a briefcase that's protected by a dozen surly men on top of the tower under construction downtown. It took me and this one guy five tries before we got it through trial and error. We finally came up with this plan that involved me flying around in the helicopter attracting bullets while he stationed himself across the way on another building with a sniper rifle.

Couple of dudes invited me to the same mission the other night and I accepted. Except they didn't want to get the chopper. I didn't want to be the know-it-all line leader, but c'mon, that building is 40 stories tall, at least. They go running into the property while I go get a helicopter. By the time I made it back, they were already dead. I land at the top and promptly get shot up.

We all hit replay and I say in the mic "i've heard a helicopter works pretty good in this mission." Uh-uh. There they go again running into the lot. I go to the docks to get another damn helicopter and this time, only one of them has been killed by the time I make it back. I see the other guy somewhere on the building, but I figure he's too deep in the structure for me to find him.

So I land the chopper at the top and see if I can grab the briefcase which is just three floors down from the top. I don't make it because it's too insane to do by yourself. I die and go into speculating mode and there's Mr. I Did It My Way, standing on a crane ladder platform about halfway up, just looking out over the city with a 1000 yard stare. Good luck in your future missions, asshole.

Oh man you are reminding me of when I did xp grinding on the hangman's noose mission in gta iv. if all four of you knew what you were doing you could nail it in about 2 minutes. just one asshole though...

is anyone having trouble getting into missions in online?

I felt bad last night because me and this one dude went into some 10-wave survival mission in Sandy Shores. In the 3rd Round, I get popped and he has to finish it himself. (As long as one player survives the round, everyone else respawns when the new round begins.)

Fourth round begins and I'm running around gathering up ammo and armor. The horde arrives and I get popped without even taking one shot. Guy's been quiet on the mic, but after that, kinda chuckles and goes "damn, dude." He tries his best but can't survive 100-percent of the round all by himself and the mission ends.

Whoops.

I get the same thing too with Quick Job. My best luck comes from physically going into a circle and auto-inviting or just waiting for some random invitation to come over on the phone.

i am psn, bobbyspirals. i haven't tried to actively find someone not already on my friends list but the crew thing has to help right? i haven't even looked at that since signing up. i notice on the leaderboard that plains has only payed for half an hour total and i am ranked #1, so clearly that is all working well.

I switched over from my regular crew to ILGG to see if that would make some of you more visible. When I did, it booted me from my current session to a new one. First voice I heard had a British accent and I was all yep, these are my online pals.

Not saying that voice was any of yours, but it was kinda funny.

Also kinda funny how members of ILGG have discovered their inner Lunas with their characters.

i've given up on gtav, playing new batman now, only reason i check in here is for the online stories. pplains you should at least blog these gtav stories, some of them are so great. (lilfreely one just brilliant.) don't quite get the ending of crane mission, did crane guy get the briefcase? why was he staring out over the city (and what's speculating mode?)

The whole point of that mission is that there is a briefcase on the 37th floor that Lester wants brought back to his warehouse on the east side. Flying a helicopter to the top and walking down three flights of ramps is much much easier than trying to scale 9/10 of a skyscraper by foot.

So when I died, it took me to speculating mode since there was still a player alive in the mission. It lets you watch from a third-person POV your buddies hopefully finish the mission without you.

But this guy on the crane, I don't know what he was doing. I guess he saw that both me and the other guy had died and decided then and there to go get a Pepsi from the fridge. Probably some kid I'm ripping apart here, but damn. I quit the mission (something frowned upon) instead of waiting around to see what genius move he'd pull next.

I'm not one of those Speak English or Die dudes, but when you're playing a game where folks are prowling around trying to kill each other, not knowing what the chatter is about can be a little frustrating. I mean, they won't even let Scotty Nguyen speak Vietnamese at the poker table, so...

But last night it was ok. I had just done this mission with these three other guys and was just riding with them in a giant 4x4 neon green pick-up. One guy kept falling out of the truck and the driver did this thing where he ramped over a cliff and hit one of the other guys in a car. Guys were in the same crew together and were just cracking up with each other. We split ways at the airfield, but I could still hear them in the helicopter. Somehow, one of the guys was in a car hooked to the cable below and two were flying the chopper, hitting the guy in the car into cliffs Homer vs Springfield Ravine style. Finally, guy who kept falling out of the truck fell out of the chopper. Maybe he was still learning what the triangle button does.

Shit settled down and I found a nice big Hummer to take to Simeon. Usually a 10-minute or so process once you outrun the cops, get it resprayed, drive it out all the way to woop-woop without wrecking it. Only other players on were speaking Spanish. I can pick out a little Spanish, but when it's coming from excitable young men using lots of slang over a little earpiece, it's all Greek to me.

They were on the other side of town though, so I wasn't really worried about them coming after me. The thing I got a kick out of was how they sounded exactly like the three guys in the green truck. I could tell when something was about to go down by the way they'd speed up their talking, start repeating the same thing over and over (tu pendo, tu pendo, tu pendo...) and then something would happen, the earpiece would get distorted with them yelling, some quiet, then one of the guys -- you could tell he was smiling -- kinda laughing and I imagine saying something to his buddies like "Do you believe this shit?"

That part was kinda cool. Like ham radio for the 21st century. But when those white blips start swarming toward me and all I hear is some fuckin' Hebrew, knock that shit off.

hey pplains, i got your friend request thing, but i haven't been playing too much lately, and plus i'm not sure if we can even play on the same server (i have a 360).

last time i did play, though, one of the missions seemed to be a motorcycle race where each team consisted of a driver and a motorcycle companion. only the companion could see the chevrons indicating which way the driver was supposed to go, and the companion was supposed to communicate this to the driver via the headset. i think? i never took the headset out of the plastic bag because i don't want to listen to 8 year olds call me bad names. is there any way to do this mission without a headset?
