ten months pass...

just watched the great Lemmy documentary, listening to Bomber now. Do bands exist like this now? Do people exist like Lemmy? The closest I can think of is Darkthrone, because they've got a handful of acknowledged classic records, a LOT more records that fans like, but few others can distinguish between, and just keep doing their thing regardless of trends. (Except in true internet-era style, Darkthrone don't tour or participate much in the outside world beyond their records, interviews, Fenriz's blog, etc) Lemmy just defies real life, like the gods decided he was going to be the symbol of a rock and roll lifestyle, and gets to drink, smoke and fuck as much as he wants for as long as he wants.

Lemmy is a fucking machine. If you'd told me this was an outtake from Overkill, I'd have believed you. But no, it's new!

Lemmy is looking more and more ill and frail these days, sadly. Here he is bringing last night's show to a premature end:

One of my friends just won tickets for the Motorhead rock cruise later this year. I hope he holds it together for that, or else she's just going to be stuck out in the ocean with Anthrax and shit.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 16:01 (eight years ago) link

And today of all days, my piece ranking all their albums for Stereogum goes live. Enjoy!

lol fuck the world for putting (post-Hanneman, post-Lombardo) Slayer as top billing above Motorhead.

RIP. Great drummer and the documentary about Ace of Spades where he and Lemmy are happily talking shit to each other is one of my favorite things ever.

There is no easy way to say this…our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made it’s way down the street, with his family.

We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words.

We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please…play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD.
Have a drink or few.

Share stories.

Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself.

HE WOULD WANT EXACTLY THAT.

there goes a man who enjoyed life without compromise, and left us with a whole lot of kick ass music so we can share in some of the fun ourselves. RIP Lemmy.

Fucking hell, man, I never thought this would happen, ever. Dude just seemed eternal. Coincidentally been listening to Hawkwind all day, guess it'll be Motorhead all night.

stupid children forever (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 29 December 2015 01:13 (eight years ago) link

I'm sure I've told this story before, but here it is anyway.

The first time (of 3) I interviewed Lemmy was in 2002 or 2003, when I was editing High Society magazine. We brought two models to the interview, which was being conducted in the basement of The World, a Times Square club owned by the WWE; the plan was to do the interview, then take photos. Interview goes great, time for photos. The girls begin to disrobe, and the WWE publicist freaks the fuck out. Drags me upstairs to the club manager's office, where I swear up and down that no WWE logos will be visible in any of the photos, and that we won't mention the venue by name, we'll just say Lemmy was interviewed and photographed "in New York." We go back downstairs, and the photos get taken. Then the photographer and I go off to watch the show, and the models decide to hang out with the band. Sometime between the interview and the start of Motörhead's set, the photographer gets a panicked call from one of the models, in the dressing room: "You need to come get us. They're doing crystal meth back here."

Fast forward to 2010, when I'm asked to come down to South by Southwest to interview Lemmy again onstage, to celebrate the premiere of the documentary about him, which my friend Wes co-directed. Backstage beforehand, we shake hands, and I say, "You probably don't remember this, but I interviewed you in 2002 or 2003 in New York, and we brought two models..." Lemmy lets out that gravel-and-cigarettes laugh, and says, "Oh yeah, I remember. You got in some trouble for that."

I've been a Motörhead fan for 30 years. I'm gonna miss that fucker.

So sad. Really thought he'd live forever. Still remember November 3rd 1980, Edinburgh Odeon more clearly than 99% of concerts I've been to subsequently.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 29 December 2015 01:50 (eight years ago) link

fuck. this is such a shock. I mean not cos a guy like him couldn't die, with his age, recent health issues, and years of hard living, but I literally just saw him live a few months ago, and although he seemed to not have the same energy as his youth, he put on a great show. the latest album was great too.

“Motörhead is over, of course. Lemmy was Motörhead,” Dee said of his long-time bandmate, who died yesterday of what’s being reported as “aggressive cancer.” Dee clarified that the group’s recently completed European tour would be its last, and that Bad Magic, released earlier this year, would likely be its final album. “We won’t be doing any more tours or anything,” Dee said. “And there won’t be any more records. But the brand survives, and Lemmy lives on in the hearts of everyone.”

r.i.p. the band, long live the brand
