Here's a list of what's unlocked in each level of the online game:

i think it would be super fun to do 'story mission' type stuff co-op online, if people are generally with it, which they generally aren't ime. i shd try to give that more of a shot.
i tried out some team deathmatch, but the joining/matching wasn't great leading to small teams. and there was one dude who was leveled up enough to have an SMG, meaning he rocked everybody else up and down. the shooting is so much less tight than MP3; lotta bad perspective problems making corners really weird
racing is way more fun, which weirdly i'm pretty good at. idk how people can be so bad at that? i won the intro race by a bunch.

and there was one dude who was leveled up enough to have an SMG,
Didn't know that was you on that motorcycle.
I'm RP 15 and got placed in a match with a bunch of people ranked 3 to 5. When the cut scene began of the team members holding their little pistols, I felt bad for 1/10 of a second.
Because it sucks for me when I get placed in a match with folks ranked 20-40 and I'm ducking assault rifle and sniper shots.

Horde mode, that's what I want to unlock
after that I don't find the unlocks very exciting until like level 40

That's where I'm at now.
Fortunately, Dave Matthews and Blues Traveler haven't come looking for me just yet.

I had the exact same problem. I turned off the console before it got a chance to save (which IIRC it asks you before it does anyway on a fresh boot) and booted again, directly into SP instead of via Online, and it put me back where I was, mercifully.

this did not work :(
i think i might have accidentally had it save with a fresh boot or something? i cannot, for the life of me, figure out where my games have gone. and honestly, even though i was having a load of fun with it, i'm not sure i want to redo fucking everything at this point

The cool thing is that you can see some of those upper levels if someone ranked that high invites you in.
I did one the other night where you just jump out of a helicopter and try to land on one of the buildings downtown without splattering -- no checkpoints or turns.

If this didn't work, there are a couple of possibilities:1. You completed enough of the brand new game to get an autosave opportunity, and selected "yes."2. You are signed into a different profile.3. There are for some reason different save files.
If it's 1... you're pretty much out of luck. Check your manual saves if you have any, maybe they'll be further along than the game's start. Otherwise, you may have wiped your progress. The fact that there are no rolling autosaves is a fucking travesty.
If it's 2, easy fix: log in on the right profile. But I doubt this is your problem.
If it's 3... well, I guess the best thing to do would be to go into your Xbox Dashboard and look for the individual save files and see if they're wonky in some way. It'd be hard for me to help from here, but maybe something will pop out at you?
Seriously, I can't believe how much of a step back this game is re: save/load, user experience, etc. Didn't San Andreas have rolling autosaves? BOOO ROCKSTAR BOOOOOOOO~

i keep trying to find crew sessions but either nobody's online, the games are full, or i'm just playing weird hours (late night EST weeknights usually)
so instead i wind up doing robberies with EmpathicPotato69 or whoever who's always trying to shoot me in the head from the passenger seat as i'm driving us there

also somehow i find the experience of WATCHING online deathmatches to be like 100% more engrossing than actually participating in them, esp. with the camera angle switches
^^ yeah. Especially being able to switch to different players.
I joined the ILGGILX crew, but you guys are always sleeping.
Joined a Simeon "go get this moving car" mission with some random the other night. Not only was he driving (fine), but he kept setting the waypoint for our moving target. Then he'd follow the purple path, even though the blue icon for the car floated further and further away. I say to him "Let me set the waypoint since you're driving," but no dice. I mean, damn, you can do those missions solo, you know.

Haven't been in freemode lately, so no hilarious stories. I do keep getting into the mission where you simply jump out of the helicopter and try to land on the building, but I keep dying. It's like a parody of a GTA game.
― pplains, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:46 (ten years ago) link
Played my first lengthy chunk of online last night, with a friend, and a) took far too many attempts to get into the same session, given that we started out in the same XBL party, b) every time we did a 2 man job together it'd end and then we'd get 6 other 1-8 or 4-8 man jobs (mostly races) to choose from, are there just not many 2 man story-type jobs around? Because one on one racing isn't that fun and one on one deathmatching is worse. c) if we decided not to do any of those and tried to drop back into freeplay instead, it'd push us into different sessions again, and we'd have to try over and over to get back together again. Infuriating.
But in the end we stopped doing jobs and played some golf and some darts and it was pretty great fun.

Simeon and Martin tend to give you 2p missions, whereas other missions tend to be 4p. If you want another you can usually just call them. You can always do any mission with 1p or 2p though. If you don't want to have other people in your missions, make sure you turn Matchmaking off. Then once your friends are in the mission with you, you can open matchmaking. You can find the setting for this in the start menu under Online, although some missions have a Matchmaking toggle for easier access.
Once you finish the mission and continue, you'll get six missions to choose from, as well as "replay" and "refresh" and "free mode". Once you're at this point, you will basically never see another 2p mission. The multiplayer lobby is focused on 4p+ missions, so if you want to do another 2p you should quit back to the map and call Simeon or another mission-giver and see what they offer you.
Other good 2p options include robbing stores, gang attacks, etc. These are free mode so you don't need to worry about matchmaking as long as you're in the same freemode with your party.

Finished it last night, got all the money in the bank, invested it in Pisswasser, guess I'll see if I want to come back to the game later.
Once I bought the Los Santos Customs with Franklin, I burned out on customizing cars; owning the pot shop is just annoying - go pick up a van and drive it here!
Not that great a game overall - the missions weren't all that engaging or difficult - died a few times in missions where you have to fight off hordes and never got the hang of flying the helicopter but that's it. So many bad drive from point A to point B missions, I never could get the satisfaction of a good random street mugging/killing because the cops always get called. Once Trevor takes over the strip club, the side mission is that you can now touch the strippers without fear of a bouncer? Um, yaaaaay.

kinda wanna talk about the soundtrack more itt -- what are all y'all's go-to stations? What songs will you steal a car just because it's playing and you wanna hear it better? What are the duds?
― I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:26 (ten years ago) link
I had Trevor get in a car once and the radio was playing "What a Fool Believes".
He said something like "What is this shit?" and changed it to the Black Flag channel.

Got sick of the hardcore station real quick cuz it's Trevor's default and I've heard most of those songs a hundred times to begin with.

If "Music Sounds Better With You" or "I'd Rather Be With You" ever come on then I immediately switch over, just cannot beat driving fast in this game with "Music Sounds Better" blaring out. "Night Nurse" is also a gimme if I'm doing some cruising in one of the missions while the dialogue's going on. But otherwise I like Radio Los Santos and the FlyLo one

Yeah this is where it was going wrong for us, when we dropped back to the map we'd end up in different sessions. Might get better luck next time though.
Go to station for me is Mirror Park, which is maybe a terrible thing to admit. But there's nothing on there I knew already, and very little I don't like.
That happened to me too and I got really angry with him for it.

I love the hardcore channel, not least for Keith Morris' DJing. Love the fact that the one Black Flag tune on the station is the one that Chuck and not Greg Ginn wrote.
But my go to is perhaps the soul/funk station, then the space disco station, then the classic rock station, then the pop station (which always seems to be playing Amerie, which is awesome). My favourite thing is listening to lachrymose AOR while committing foul crimes - remember sweet memories of bad behaviour in Vice City soundtracked by John Waite's Missing You...

Wish GTA offered DLC packs for the soundtrack - assuming you have 4-5 stations that you enjoy listening to, 6-8 songs per, it doesn't take long to burn out. $5 and I get 8 new tracks for each station? Sold.

Got my own shitty apartment. So nice having a garage. Ordered up the free Elegy at last since I now have a place to put it.
The TV thing where you can watch other players adds a whole new weird element to this game. I had grabbed an expensive car to take to Simeon, and while I was heading down the highway, everyone got booted off. It was suddenly an open session and I was the only player.
I drop the car off and head back to the apartment. It's 15-20 minutes later. I turn on the TV and see there are two other players back in the session - one ranked 9 and the other ranked 44. No. 9's just out and about ramping his motorcycle downtown and it doesn't take long for No. 44 to come up and shoot him. I watch it all on TV.
So it's just No. 44 and me now, but I'm on the couch. He starts robbing liquor stores. I also see that despite his ranking, he can't drive his motorcycle for shit. I say what the hell, maybe I'll got out and find this guy. He's got a lot of cash from the robberies.
I go outside and see his blip is about a block away. I walk toward him and we both just pause. Suddenly, I hear sirens in the distance. His blip takes off like a banshee the other way. And that's when a cop who's apparently chasing him smashes right through me in the middle of the crosswalk and I die right there.
― pplains, Friday, 25 October 2013 20:59 (ten years ago) link
brilliant. the fact you watched it on tv for a bit is what makes it.
― NI, Saturday, 26 October 2013 02:45 (ten years ago) link
Saw one guy getting chased by the cops - he landed a helicopter inside the military base and stole an airplane. Then he lands the plane to grab the contents of a crate, gets shot at by some cops, shoots the cops, grabs the police car and starts ramping over the cliffs.
Best part is that not only was it on TV, but it was being covered by Weazel News like it was the OJ chase. Drove by the guy later as I was looking to update the Elegy and I was all, Hey, it's the guy from TV.
