I am afraid that this thread, mordy's thread on "what really matters," and bends' recent revive of the "ILX is sad" thread indicates that ilxors are collectively coming to the realization that they don't want to be doing this and the boards will
be abandoned within a month...

not the word, obv.

uk cheese board (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:23 (ten years ago) link

especially britishers

the "Weird Al" Yankovic of country music (stevie), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:26 (ten years ago) link

never realised it was infelicitous as Henry Root might've said

uk cheese board (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:26 (ten years ago) link

use "whilst" and you enter the realm of these guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsHCmKc1iBw

the "Weird Al" Yankovic of country music (stevie), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:27 (ten years ago) link

in my experience, it is used by the worst writers, to gussy up the worst writing.

the "Weird Al" Yankovic of country music (stevie), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:27 (ten years ago) link

seriously i almost never notice it, i think i use the two words interchangeably in my head

uk cheese board (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:40 (ten years ago) link

or if i use them in different contexts i guess it's purely for auditory reasons based on the words around them

uk cheese board (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:41 (ten years ago) link

I probably didn't have a problem with it until I started subbing writers covering prog music

the "Weird Al" Yankovic of country music (stevie), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:43 (ten years ago) link

the thing is i can see what you're saying now and i fear you're stealing my innocence

uk cheese board (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:45 (ten years ago) link

It's not common in US English, but I think there's a slight differentiation for UK speakers. See: Among/Amongst. I avoid the '..st' endings these days because I know it annoys non-Britishers, but really if it sounds right I have no problem with it.

a beef supreme (dog latin), Monday, 25 November 2013 09:45 (ten years ago) link

P sure theres a tone/context that requires whilst, tho it may exclusively be heard on bbc history programmes or something

30 ch'lopping days left to umas (darraghmac), Monday, 25 November 2013 10:05 (ten years ago) link

whilst is considered obsolete by most subs, ime. i would always change it to while.

Whilst athwart

乒乓, Monday, 25 November 2013 16:18 (ten years ago) link

I've always given britishes a pass for whilst. If Vyvyan can say it, so can everyone else over there.

pplains, Monday, 25 November 2013 16:39 (ten years ago) link

as a british among britishes, i don't think i ever rly hear ppl use 'whilst'. it is a little unwieldy for most sentences. the other '...st' endings get more airtime iirc.

thighs without a face (c sharp major), Monday, 25 November 2013 16:46 (ten years ago) link

i wonder how the local usage of "while" to mean "to" as in "i'm working from 8 while 5" impacts on the way i use "whilst"?

uk cheese board (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 November 2013 16:49 (ten years ago) link

in that you'd use 'whilst' to differentiate while-meaning-at-the-time-when (or while-meaning-although) from while-meaning-until?

thighs without a face (c sharp major), Monday, 25 November 2013 16:52 (ten years ago) link

sometimes, maybe. like a said before i think it's just an unconscious euphony thing

uk cheese board (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 November 2013 16:53 (ten years ago) link

it seems to impact the way you use "impact" as a noun >:( xp

I used betwixt an hour ago on this very site

30 ch'lopping days left to umas (darraghmac), Monday, 25 November 2013 16:59 (ten years ago) link

I didn't think I had a problem with 'whilst' but I just searched a 137,000-word document spanning four years of mostly reviews and it only appears once so maybe I have internalised its fannydanglitude

screaming lord, such opinion (DJ Mencap), Monday, 25 November 2013 19:00 (ten years ago) link
