yeah, that's what I say to my body every day, and to mind when I notice I've been taking antihistamines that expired in 2010 for three days.

that's some impressive stockpiling though

can anyone recommend an optometrist for an eye exam that takes insurance and is cool with people buying their glasses elsewhere after they have their prescription (i.e. gives you your PD without being a dick)
― caek, Friday, 18 October 2013 16:53 (ten years ago) link
Simply in the crowd
― Sodade Stereo (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 18 October 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link
Ha wrong thread
i have the *best* place for that in hong kong, sorry not in the us though, optometrists in the us are such a huge scam, i recommend booking a vacation to a country with a sane policy towards optometrists and getting a 'script there, possibly your glasses there too, good luck usa
― 乒乓, Friday, 18 October 2013 17:36 (ten years ago) link
goto an optometrist and buy the cheapest glasses you can and use those as yr backup glasses then order the sick ass ones you want from warby parker or w/e
uninformed advice from a guy who doesnt wear glasses
― lag∞n, Friday, 18 October 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link
warby parker have them on-site now, but they don't take insurance. if it comes to it i will pay their $50 rather than waste a uk vacation day going to specsavers.
doesn't chinavision have a guy? he seems like he would have a guy.
― caek, Friday, 18 October 2013 17:42 (ten years ago) link
this article says get a costco membership and maybe they will do it for you for free http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/breakout/eyeglass-giant-fights-back-against-tiny-online-competitors-124045195.html
― lag∞n, Friday, 18 October 2013 17:42 (ten years ago) link
also this is unsolicited but if you need some cool frames but don't want warby parkers, you might find some sick vintage ones at fabulous fanny's, and then have some shop in chinatown make the lenses
i also like moscot a lot but they're pricey
― 乒乓, Friday, 18 October 2013 17:43 (ten years ago) link
why doesnt the warby take insurance seems dumb
― lag∞n, Friday, 18 October 2013 17:43 (ten years ago) link
is there a thread to talk about avonte oquendo
― iatee, Friday, 18 October 2013 17:47 (ten years ago) link
also if you're not changing your script and just getting a a new pair, you can just ask any shop in chinatown to copy your old pair
― 乒乓, Friday, 18 October 2013 17:48 (ten years ago) link
i need a new prescription i think
afaict these old school places don't give you the full prescription including PD here even if you buy their specs
warby parker glasses are all too small for my colossal cranium (really, i feel like they would shatter if i clenched my jaw), but i figure they will give me the Rx to take to fabulous fanny's or whatever.
― caek, Friday, 18 October 2013 19:08 (ten years ago) link
fab fannys just sells frames, you then take them to some shops in Chinatown they recommend, the Chinatown shops will then ship your stuff to china and you'll get it back in like 2 weeks
hah pd, you could just ask a trusted friend to measure that for you w a ruler. i got my script updated over the summer and they had a fancy gizmo that did everything iirc
― 乒乓, Friday, 18 October 2013 19:12 (ten years ago) link
I want to say that the packing slip from my glasses or contacts had the PD on it once
― mh, Friday, 18 October 2013 19:45 (ten years ago) link
fab fanny's frames are ~100$ right? we're not talking 300$ frames, are we?
― caek, Friday, 18 October 2013 19:47 (ten years ago) link
yeah that's about right, though they have more expensive options as well
― 乒乓, Friday, 18 October 2013 20:05 (ten years ago) link
they're literally vintage frames, so it depends on what they have on hand at any given moment. but most frames are priced very reasonably iirc
― 乒乓, Friday, 18 October 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link
i am also going to the LES to try to buy a 2nd hand bike tomorrow, so my transformation is almost complete
― caek, Friday, 18 October 2013 20:17 (ten years ago) link
I'm in North Carolina on vacation, but I just want to mention that I used the classic fab fannys/optical 88 combo. $75 for frames, $75 for light prescription lenses. Done in an hour.

Everyone go to New York.
― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Sunday, 20 October 2013 00:44 (ten years ago) link
Also there's this funny story in which I thought caek was saying that LG and cozen were here NOW and they were going out last night. It seemed like the other group I was with should meet up with them so I tried that but turned into this big mistaken identity thing and then I texted caek at like 11.30 to find he didn't even mean now.
― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Sunday, 20 October 2013 00:46 (ten years ago) link
Okay it wasn't actually that funny. A little funny, though, definitely.

i think it's at union pool in williamsburger.
ken, did i tell you how much i enjoyed the Gene Kerrigan book you gave me? so much so that now i'm reading all his other stuff i can get my hands on.

Yes union pool

are dogs and cats a hipster essential in nyc? almost every apt on airbnb has a dog or a cat. nobody i know in london has one.
― Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:43 (ten years ago) link
dogs and cats are v popular in usa altogether iirc
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:48 (ten years ago) link
yes single people have pets here and it's considered not weird
― caek, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link
The one catch is that nobody spends any time with their dogs and cats. New York must have the highest per capita rate of roommates driven batty by lunatic cats starved for attention by their inattentive masters (who imagine themselves as doting pet-lovers when it comes time for Instagram).
