I clicked on this thread expecting to read about people who are afraid of going into hibernation, I had no idea the word would mean something so different! Though apparently both "hibernation" and "Hibernia" have their root in the Latin word for "wintry"?

central triumvirate of dunce, alcoholic and shifty embezzler as an unholy trinity of Irish caricatures).
Hmm, I hadn't thought about "shifty" before... That makes sense and goes some way towards explaining things. I had just thought of you guys as "feisty" and "little."

Guilty in general on former, but 'little' idk whats little im five ten and prob avg height at best?
But we are shifty ya

Yeah, the shifty thing was new to me too... As far as European stereotypes go, I think it's more often associated with Italians and Slavs?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 11:05 (ten years ago) link
I have based my conception only on my five two wife and the Notre Dame mascot. To be honest though, I'm six three and of largely Swedish stock, so my assessment of most peoples is that they are "little".

Well in britain id imagine we v much filled the role of migrant worker that slavs do in many other countries do now, so much of a muchness there. Also we were the terrorist underclass there too as far as the mid 90s so shifty is maybe getting off lightly, or probably shifty is a light term for how we'd have been viewed through a certain filter.
The rest of europe probably figuring it out since the credit crunch.

Breed like rabbits too, amirite?
Shifty embezzler? Don't recognise that either tbh.

Yeah, I guess the stereotypes are different in Britain than in Finland, where the majority's only real contact with the Irish is the occasional tourist, or the lone immigrant working at their local "Irish" pub.

The "shifty" idea has definitely increased over the last couple of years of financial malfeasance, presumably because people weren't paying attention when Charlie Haughey was Taoiseach. I'd say it only applies to a certain class of politician / investor though.

I thought other countries thought of us as cute hoors, in their obviously inferior local nomenclature for the concept.
I had no idea London Irish had even started broadcasting! There are episodes on 4od!

So I’d got sacked by Tottenham, relegated with QPR, my mate of three years turned out to be an Irish crook, and my last memory was of him disappearing off to Lime Street station in Liverpool with another £150 of my money.
Oh yes, it had been one hell of a year.

This shifty business interested me particularly as I was sure I'd heard the Welsh described likewise, then I came across this:
"Stereotypes explored include the Welsh character (shifty, oversexed or verbose)..."
Don't think there's much chance of 'oversexed' being applied to the Irish though, tbf.

Hibernophobia? I don't understand why anyone would be deathly afraid of hibernation? I think it would be refreshing, a good way to lose some weight, and solve the whole Seasonal Affective Disorder thing, too.
