Gavin and Stacey, despite its flaws, is quite funny I think. The older generation of actors are the best part (Gavin's parents, Rob Bryden, Stacey's mom).

Oh sure steve - I think Stacey's very believable - as an empty-headed sparklepixie who I wouldn't want to spend more than five minutes in conversation with. In that sense she's very realistic.

I dunno if it's that I'm missing something with G&S, but every time I try and watch it just feels like the same things are happening, and they're not really happening in a very interesting manner. Someone's trying to get some people in a vaaan, 'ow are they gonna get that many people in a vaaan, oh don'choo worry we'll sort it all aaaht, and it all gets sorted out and Ruth Jones says something like "Same thing 'appened when I was doing my pole-dancing for John Major". It's the same feeling I get off Entourage, really, this sort of air of slightly forced likeability that's, y'know, bearable and such, but never actually funny or anything.

Oh I didn't realize Stacey was supposed to be contemptible. From the sound of the "making of" the actress who plays her doesn't either.

I think the underlying premise is that the couple are the 'normals' and each step away from them towards the periphery is populated by characters that are more and more strange.

WT is beyond 'poor writing' - it's a kind of poor writing, but it's worse and deeper than that. I expect it's better as a TV programme.

They worked for different branches of the same company, and flirted over the phone when they were ordering stuff or whatever from each other.

Blimey this is quite a busy thread. Didn't realise how much this guy winds people up. He hasn't made much of an impression on me either way. As for G&S, it's amiable and watchable but no more than that.

Brydon's character's easily the best, though I suspect that's as much down to the performance as the writing.

I couldn't stand him actually. In the making-of his says he winces when he sees himself on TV, says "It just looks like ME, but pulling funny faces!" And I'm like hmm that's a very accurate self-assessment for an actor.

On iPlayer till tomorrow night, one-off pilot (at present), only shown on BBC Scotland, best British sketch show I've seen since The Armando Iannucci Shows, can confidently predict will be better than whatever Corden and Horne come up with.

I especially liked the monologues about signs and guys and mirrors and swings, esp. the swings, which ties into my whole love of silly/serious tightrope walking. I can definitely see the Armando Iannucci influence. Hope it gets picked up for a series proper.
