i'm more like, 1 entree + 1 beer + tip and tax = $25-30 and i'm like fuuuuuuuck
but i have a friend who spent the summer in london and said like, takeout lo mein was like $20
so maybe your metrics will be different

if you want a culinary tour guide for flushing and/or mht chinatown, hmu tho
― 乒乓, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:19 (ten years ago) link
also some of those restaurants no way youre getting out the door for $40
― lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:19 (ten years ago) link
the main difference i notice is that take away is cheap here. if you drink alcohol restaurants here seem (very) expensive to me.
― caek, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:19 (ten years ago) link
yeah i read that too lagøn. the UWS/harlem ones are actually that cheap though afaict and now i have a list to try.
― caek, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link
completely baffling to me how dim sum go go gets a michelin star year after year
― 乒乓, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:22 (ten years ago) link
yeah exactly what i mean
― lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:22 (ten years ago) link
like they like it cause its got corny modern decor or what
― lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link
that's kind of generally discrediting to Michelin IMO

mission is closed down, possibly for a long time
― max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:28 (ten years ago) link
michelin is garbage
― max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:29 (ten years ago) link
nymag has decent listings but they give weird stuff "critics picks"
Yeah this would be awesome, I was reading about some places in Flushing this week.
Yr friend's experience with London is actually correct really, there is cheap takeaway food, but you could pay a lot in some really bad places.
Then there are v cheap spots or high end places that need not be expensive, gastropubs or small plate bars.

eaters "top 38" is a pretty good list... their "heatmap" is an accurate summary of what ppl are talking about on the internet but its not the same as good
http://ny.eater.com/archives/2013/07/the_38_essential_new_york_restaurants_april_13.phphttp://ny.eater.com/archives/2013/07/the_38_essential_new_york_restaurants_april_13.phphttp://ny.eater.com/archives/2013/09/the_brooklyn_heatmap_where_to_eat_right_now_9.php
― max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:31 (ten years ago) link
also, dont bother with katzs, or carnegie
great ny noodletown or shanghai 456 are better "institutions" both in terms of quality and price, i think
or russ and daughters if you want good ny jewish food
There are so many dumb reasons why lots of great places can't win Michelin as to discredit it really.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:32 (ten years ago) link
Thanks for these Max, really helpful.
mission chinese closing btw http://eater.com/archives/2013/10/03/doh-shutters-mission-chinese-food-in-nyc.php
― max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link
katz pastrami is pretty great if kinda wildly expensive imho, like i wouldnt make a destination out of it but if you happen to be drunk and nearby and ready to house a big pile of meat then by all means
― lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:34 (ten years ago) link
ippudo is like a million times better than momofuku in like every way imho if you want ramen, and really you shd
― lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link
With craft beer and stuff I'm guessing that it's just kind of omnipresent like London? Here there's no real need to go to a bar specifically for whatever beer as many have local good stuff or big tap selections anyhow.
I was in NY before but it was about 06, literally my only interest at this time was techno.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:39 (ten years ago) link
when i have ppl in town i usually take them to like great ny noodletown and either otto or co., all of which are terrific, not too expensive restaurants that you can usually get a table at pretty quickly and are also like, "new york food" i.e. chinese/pizza
― max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:39 (ten years ago) link
i prefer momofuku ssam to the noodlebar if you want to do momofuku
also ippudo and all the big ramen places are fucking impossible to get tables at unless you eat at like 5p
they're both 'fine' but great ny noodletown is kind of a greasy spoon diner, and shanghai asia manor has better shanghainese food
― 乒乓, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:40 (ten years ago) link
i have lots of Opinions about Food
― max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:40 (ten years ago) link

lg if you wanna splurge and you like sushi, check out sushi yasuda for lunch... you can probably get out for under 50 per person if you go for lunch and get a set. they only take two booking times per day tho for lunch
― 乒乓, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:43 (ten years ago) link
i just have so many great memories of noodletown, and have had way better meals there than at 456 or joe shanghai. grand szechuan i agree is great.

also ronan like basically anything in the tarlow empire is really good for a slightly nicer "brooklyn" restaurant experience. romans is my favorite but reynard and diner are also top notch imo
― max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:47 (ten years ago) link
