I swiped the thread title for Jon's piece. Seemed perfectly apposite.

Why didn't you just call it "Morrissey: Why Is He So Bad And Hated?"

Boards of Komeda (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 17 October 2013 14:15 (ten years ago) link

cos he has a terribly annoying writing style. music and lyrical work was definitely the right option.

UPDATE Feb. 18:
As noted by several people in the comments, the release is an early April Fools' Day joke.

For all that is good and holy, can we or someone please, please, please write an essay dissecting and tearing apart this clown's act?

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/james-francos-art-school-duo-daddy-preps-smithsinspired-album-20141111

I know, he's not worthy of being written about, but still. I hope there is enough venom in Smiths fans to put this joker in his place.

What's funny is that, of all people, the man who became the band's enemy is working with him, which tells you a lot about James Franco and Andy.

Does it really matter?

The songs are bigger than he is, and will survive this slight assault.

I guess I can say that, we will doubtless never hear it over here.

more reunion rumours..

piscesx, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 20:34 (eight years ago) link

I honestly hope the Smiths never reform. There would be so much hype, such high expectations, an insane rush for tickets and massive resale markups... it stresses me out to think about it.

JRN, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 21:17 (eight years ago) link

Is there anything more to the rumours than Warners starting an official Smiths twitter account?

Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 22:04 (eight years ago) link

Morrissey is an asshole. So sad to read Johnny would have reformed in 08 if not for Moz being a flake and and weirdo.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 29 October 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

I think Morrissey's indifference probably saved the legacy of the band, tbh.

At least to some degree.

I guess nobody ever thinks about the Police reunion, though, except for people who saw one of the shows.

I'll just say this...I definitely would not want a reunited Smiths to attempt writing new material.

Freak Party featuring
Angie Brown

Firefly / You Can Drum But You Can't Hide

Released 25/11/16 Label Funky Si Records Cat no. 7nqu004

Limited Edition 7"

The pre Smiths 'Mythical' lost tapes have been found, restored, remixed and released for the first time in 35 years. Featuring Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, Craig Gannon and original drummer Simon Wolstencroft, the original pre Morrissey line up recording has been augmented with the incredible vocal talent of Soul and House legend Angie Brown.

The full story: Thirty-five years ago three enthusiastic teenagers put together a band called Freak Party. The musicians in question were the legendary Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Simon Wolstencroft, who was previously in an early incarnation of The Stone Roses then called The Patrol, before joining The Fall where he remained for 11 years. The inspirational first recording of the newly created songs Firefly and Don't Push Your Luck, under the Freak Party name was captured on a studio cassette all that time ago. Unfortunately the tape got lost for many years only to turn up in a drum case that Wolstencroft had mislaid during a house move.

The recordings have never been heard apart from a different section being used as an underscore in an audiovisual advert for Simon's autobiography You Can Drum But You Can't Hide. Wolstencroft drafted in Mike Bennett, the producer he had worked with on both The Fall, and Ian Brown. Mike and Simon had co-written the smash hit Golden Gaze with Ian Brown. The enthusiastic Wolstencroft easily convinced Bennett that this original tape was worthy of a reworking. Bennett gathered together a team to work with him on getting rid of the hiss on the tape and blending in new parts, having learnt from fellow Jet Records muse Jeff Lynne , who had used a similar technique on the Beatles archive recording As Free As A Bird. Bennett was able to add brass and Hammond organ to augment and invigorate the original recordings. The band members were delighted with the results. Instead of asking Morrissey, Simon Wolstencroft and Mike Bennett recruited soul and house legend Angie Brown who added new inspiring vocals culminating in truly amazing results. Further intrigue was added by Craig Gannon of the Smiths, who put additional guitars on the two superb tracks Firefly and Don't Push Your Luck.

monochrome set.

i mean they were both great and they both sounded like they came out of nowhere but the monochrome set came first. they just didn't make it big....

T. Rex

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Monday, 31 October 2016 18:19 (seven years ago) link

I mean, listen to 'Metal Guru' and tell me you can't draw a direct line between that and 'Panic' ... The Smiths had several songs which featured chord progressions which just cycled endlessly, and a lot of T. Rex songs are just verse after verse with the same chord progression.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Monday, 31 October 2016 18:21 (seven years ago) link

yeah, I always thought of them as a band who worse their influences on their sleeve, if anything

soref, Monday, 31 October 2016 18:30 (seven years ago) link

um, "wore"

soref, Monday, 31 October 2016 18:30 (seven years ago) link

'Cosmic Dancer' is a good example of a T. Rex song that just cycles through the same chords for verse after verse with an occasional short break/'B' section - there's no real chorus! Likewise, 'The Queen Is Dead' is just verse after verse with the same chord progression with the occasional short break/'B' section and against there's no real chorus.

I always thought the Byrds jangle was in there plus big 60s pop.
Morrissey was famously vocal about the New York Dolls when they were around which is prety well known tghough not sure it can be heard in the sound of the band 10 years later.

The William of William It Was Really Nothing was probably Mckenzie wasn't it. Not sure if the actual sound owed much to the band though.

Stevolende, Monday, 31 October 2016 18:34 (seven years ago) link

No, but it's not hard to imagine Mackenzie being an influence on Morrissey vocally. Mackenzie being the superior singer, of course.
