Anti-Pioneer just towers over me, that song and this album <3 <3

She does 'Don't Give Up' on the new Peter Gabriel covers CD--haven't heard it yet, but am intrigued

ornamental cabbage (James Morrison), Thursday, 3 October 2013 23:50 (ten years ago) link

one year passes...

I was just thinking "Hmm, I haven't heard from Feist in YEARS!" so I went on spotify to pull up The Reminder and was greeted by this album, which I had completely forgotten even exists.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 6 February 2015 19:10 (nine years ago) link

i found it forgettable too. seemed like it removed everything i liked about her in the first place -- maybe purposefully, i don't know...

tylerw, Friday, 6 February 2015 19:15 (nine years ago) link

I wonder if I even listened to this in 2011. I probably did at least once, but playing it now is basically a new experience. Doesn't seem too bad atm.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 6 February 2015 19:20 (nine years ago) link

It's an amazing album and by any other artist would be considered a masterpiece, I dunno what people saw in her first two records but this is the one

turn dog for up (fgti), Friday, 6 February 2015 20:55 (nine years ago) link

ha maybe i should give it another go... just didn't strike a chord w/ me at all.

"Undiscovered First" really is tremendous.

Anti-Pioneer

i saw her on this tour and that lineup of her bands and all the arrangments they did were so fucking great. just a well put together show.

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 6 February 2015 22:42 (nine years ago) link

yeah, great album. don't know why it went out so quietly

Nhex, Saturday, 7 February 2015 00:04 (nine years ago) link

First two albums have A++ moments but are patchy overall. Metals is far and away her best album, front to back.

I actually don't know many of the songs by name since I just put on the cd and listen all the way through bcz it's an awesome album

"any party" is stunning

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 16:00 (six years ago) link

oh i'm referring to the new one as her best record, not metals

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 16:01 (six years ago) link

the brief sample of mastodon's "high road" on "a man is not his song" is both lol and amazing

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 16:40 (six years ago) link

Interesting! I played it through once yesterday and thought it was her most indulgently tuneless set of songs, I'll try again though.

The Mastodon sample just had me thinking an extra tab was open

monotony, Friday, 28 April 2017 22:51 (six years ago) link

idgi, there are so many tunes on this record

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 22:52 (six years ago) link

sounds very odd to me sonically, but also fresh - look forward to spending more time with it, certainly less straightforward than metals though it has a lot of the same qualities

niels, Monday, 1 May 2017 17:54 (six years ago) link

The Mastodon sample just had me thinking an extra tab was open

my exact thought was "fuck, did the promo tab move into a different album by mistake, that happens sometimes"

it's in 6/8 but each verse clips the last beat from the last measure

Still think it’s in 9/8

Reference to mountains and metallurgic percussion might fire Wagnerian association some of us already have with that time signature.

Anyway, don’t know if I ever listened to this whole album before. Good stuff.

Her best album by far, even if her best-known songs are elsewhere

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 12 December 2021 23:05 (two years ago) link

one year passes...

Metals is her best album (even if the biggest singles are elsewhere), so this is great to hear. And personally I think Blake Mills elevates just about everything he's involved in. So I'm excited for this. I liked these first three songs though need to spend more time with them.

Metals is her best album

I discovered her with "The Reminder" and am still most partial to that one.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 23 February 2023 15:01 (one year ago) link

The Reminder is such a beautifully constructed album that still sounds tremendous. Her most immediate hooks and my favorite, too.

Indexed, Thursday, 23 February 2023 15:04 (one year ago) link

I love the reminder too though I think it loses some momentum with the 1-2 of The Park and The Water. I’ve always felt it was a brilliant album undermined by its sequencing.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Thursday, 23 February 2023 15:38 (one year ago) link

Yeah these are great.

Weird how some of her songs now make me think of James Blake singing them.

I like “Hiding out in the open” a lot ! The other new tracks I need to listen to more.
I totally missed her latest album “Pleasure”. I suppose it isn’t great ?

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 24 February 2023 13:17 (one year ago) link

Pleasure is good but it’s also my least favorite of hers.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 24 February 2023 15:44 (one year ago) link

I quite enjoyed Pleasure, it's a bit rawer and rougher around the edges than The Reminder or Metals but I like her rockier moments.
