Space Mutiny is underrated.

BIG MCLARGEHUGE!

i love the part where hard beefslab or whatever is screaming as he's about to crash, then awkwardly stops screaming as he realizes, "oh wait, i'm supposed to jump off"

Here's Mike Nelson as "Jack Perkins", host of the Mystery Science Theater hour (when Comedy Central would split the re-run episodes during the week into two parts with the hosting segments tacked on):

Racket Girls is clearly the most underrated episode

Absolutely a killer episode. Monk is great.

"He's one of the undead, boss."

2. Gamera vs. Guiron (hello/hello! zabriske point!)
3. Time Chasers (food court of the future! vermont!)
4. San Francisco Intl (windbreakers! davey!)
5. Riding With Death (mellow! abby!)
6. Girl In Lovers Lane (big stupid! heterosexual experiences!)
7. Tormented (sessions presents! beatnik!)
8. City on Fire (good morning! barry newman!)
9. Zombie Nightmare (tennis! canadian club!)
10. Fire Maidens from Outer Space (the secretary! more padding!)

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 18:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm still going with Rocketship X-M for "most underrated", since it was the episode that made me fall in love with the show, so many years ago. (Uh... fifteen years ago. I was watching the show beforehand, but I taped most of the first [1991] Turkey Day Marathon, and watched those episodes again and again and again.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Didn't they do a special in 1998 for the Academy Awards, too? (I was pregnant at the time and just really sick with the flu, but the riff of Captain Smith setting sail on Titanic sticks with me: "I'm gonna sink this bitch.")

"Not since Fire Maidens in Outer Space has there been such a thrilling ladder scene."

i downloaded the 4th and 5th seasons and have been forcing everyone who comes to my apartment to watch them.

p@reene (Pareene), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Been Netflixing some of the episodes, and holy fuck I forgot how riotous the "Circus on Ice" short was.

-"Women are torn apart like fresh bread!"
-"It's Jules & Jim on ice!"
-"Spot the man in this chorus line."
-the entirety of the "fawn getting shot" sequence
-the best delivery/timing of the word "YES!" ever in a riff, via Joel

4. San Francisco Intl (windbreakers! davey!)

Oh yeah, that's another POX choice.

I think Season 6 was pretty clearly the strongest, from a joke-writing standpoint.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 6 July 2006 05:06 (seventeen years ago) link

thank god this thread exists.

haven't read anything yet, but why was the show cancelled?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 6 July 2006 10:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not sure why the Sci Fi network canceled them, but after 11 years I wasn't surprised. Disappointed, but not surprised. (Didn't Sci Fi pick them up after Comedy Central - or whatever it was then - dumped them?)

Meantime, the next DVD set has been confirmed -- out the end of August!

Episodes are:

* 212- GODZILLA VS. MEGALON
* 503- SWAMP DIAMONDS (plus short: WHAT TO DO ON A DATE)
* 514- TEEN-AGE STRANGLER (plus short: IS THIS LOVE?)
* 810- THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION

The collection also includes these extras:

* "MST3K Video Jukebox" (15 songs from the series)
* "Photo Gallery"
* "Outtakes" (we're told this actually means about 15 minutes of the best moments from "Poopie 2")

August 29 is the confirmed release date; with the usual suggested retail price.

Ah, a clean copy of Teenage Strangler -- I'm so happy.

Godzilla vs. Megalon. I like this episode a whole bunch. One case where the homo-coding of the two main bachelor characters is actually not off-base.

Not to mention the dorky kid in hot pants and Oscar Wilde as heavy.

Anyway, listened to the Rifftrax thingamadooz. It's about the same as the various Mike-only DVD commentaries, alternately pretty funny and kinda flat, but worth $2 for a download and not too hard to sync up with the film. Most unexpected joke: an Iron and Wine reference.

One of the eight million scenes featuring people dancing to the Jeff Healey Band -- dude in the audience does have a haunting similarity.

Anyway, next one will be The Fifth Element, while it turns out Mike, Bridget and their kids are moving to San Diego, due to Mike's increasing role with Legend Films as 'chief content producer.' Bit of a climate shift, that!

Recent RiffTrax -- The Fifth Element and now Star Trek V -- which was the subject of a actually not that bad fake MST3K effort some years back. This RiffTrax take is of interest in that it is both Mike and Kevin Murphy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Partook of the Star Trek V commentary this evening. It's GREAT, even just for nostalgia factor alone. I love the fact that they can work a little bluer than they could on MST3K, it's fun to hear the oversexed jokes that you always knew they wanted to do. Granted, it's a little slow in parts, but overall I'd say HOORAY! I'm keen to try out Fifth Element now...and I see that he's working on Cocktail. HEHEHE!

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 27 August 2006 05:36 (seventeen years ago) link

aww man i want to hear that but i've got reservations about paying for it.

star trek V i mean.
