i agree with chocolate k... although i think the dialogue in y is WAY better than runaways

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

You guys!!! The Chase groanness is explicable because he's the kind of dope who'd say stupid things like that. The dead rockers in Y, I'll grant you that (who cares about dead Stones -- Sleater-Kinney is still alive!!!), and I've become too bored with X-Machines, but BKV has done great dialogue in his non-creator stuff like Ult X-Men and Mystique, a-a-and his first Escapist story!

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not that Chase wouldn't make dumb comments, but that a guy like Chase probably wouldn't know enough to make that comment in the first place. I haven't read anything else by Vaughan, but I'm looking forward to his Dr. Strange. Oh, and the dialogue problem isn't as prevalent in the Ex Machina I've read, but those creepy facial expressions bother the hell out of me.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:04 (seventeen years ago) link

The line is something like "I'm going to go all Menendez on them", which is not only an annoying formulation to begin with, but one that's used far too often throughout the book

Maybe he wouldn't think to use the reference, but kids totally say stuff like that!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 May 2006 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

(except with more swearing!)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 May 2006 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I like his dialogue. It's corny but at least it doesn't showboat.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 22 May 2006 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i think the problem is that it's like novel dialogue.

I'm sure they talk that way. The reference feels wrong, though, and that's the third time a character uses the "I'm/they're gonna go all [cultural, political, or historical reference] on them/us" within a dozen or so pages, which makes the entire line just annoying as hell. I don't know, Vaughan needs to learn some new slang, or colloquialisms, or whatever.

Cleveland is supposedly the home of rock 'n' roll, but it's hard to find good Cleveland bands.

Pere Ubu, hello

Wedding bands are the spandex of rock.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:35 (seventeen years ago) link

The Grand Avenue Band looks like they rule.

Weddings:

American (ha)
Jewish
Slovenian
Italian
Croatian

Polish

They do Justin Timberlake and all the Croatian hits!

Croatia is the keytar of rock.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:40 (seventeen years ago) link

The Grand Avenue Wedding Band gives the people what they want. They are the Dan Slott of music (or maybe the Greg Horn?).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

A GUIDE:

- Grand Avenue Wedding Band = Joey Q
- Steely Dan = Dan Slott
- Keane = Mark Millar

BKV's semi-official announcement.

This has me more angry at him than when he killed [REDACTED]!

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Holy jumping sharks, Batman!.

I wanted him to stay longer, mainly because I had the hope that a certain deceased character would come back...

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:54 (seventeen years ago) link

DEAD MEANS DEAD.

All BKV's interviews/FAQs I've read state that [REDACTED] is dead for good -- so the best shot for [REDACTED] coming back to life would be under new managament.

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 20:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Huh. I guess I don't mind this...I like it when books have real endings, and if the new team sucks I'll just pretend it got canceled.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 20:11 (seventeen years ago) link

They should just cancel it, it kinda sucks now anyway.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

How could he kill off the fat girl in Runaways, what a monster

Adrienne Begley (sparklecock), Thursday, 12 October 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Keep 'em coming. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 October 2006 15:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Does he feel that many of his characters speak with the same voice?

What is his fascination with puerile, teenage sense of humor?

Why is he so sensible about properties he owns? I.e. letting go of Runaways and killing fat chick therein?

c('°c) (Leee), Thursday, 12 October 2006 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Is he worried that he'll run out of facts?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 October 2006 16:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha

is Yorick supposed to be quite so irritating? I mean, I know he's meant to be slightly annoying, but most of the time he's a full-blown prick.

I've stopped reading now that Yorick has dissed Yoko Ono. Sometimes you just gotta make a stand.

Not a firm C, but I've liked the 5 volumes so far. Reading via free library borrows.

I read the last issue yesterday, which prompted the thread revive. I think it's reasonably solid -- I remember being occasionally confused by the time travel plotting when reading it a month at a time, but I imagine it would be clear on reread. From the first issue I thought 'well this is obviously going to be a movie someday,' but I see Amazon is going to make a tv series out of it.
