Yeah but unluckily for the Cardinals they don't play at Coors Field.

The only NL teams with fewer runs scored than the Padres are the Giants and Nats.

The Padres have been 1 or 2 games over .500 like 15 times since July 11th, but every time they peek their heads above the line, they lose the next couple games. It's infuriating.

I personally think the best thing that could happen is if the Padres fail to make the playoffs. I want massive, wholesale change to this team, because as it is constituted, it just isn't good enough to do much of anything in the playoffs. The argument for the playoffs is Peavy + Eaton + pray for magic, but Peavy is only a very good pitcher, and Eaton has only ever been a shutdown pitcher for like 2 months earlier this season, and don't make me run through the list of pitchers who had two good months for the Padres.

The Padres remind me of last year's Twins... Johan Santana and then hope the amazing bullpen can win the rest of the games. But amazing bullpens don't tend to be quite so amazing in the playoffs... I remember what happened the last time Trevor Hoffman pitched in a World Series game. The ball is somewhere in the Bronx.

Another problem is that last year's Twins had a much better offense than the Pads, a much better defense, and have actually improved offensively since then. The Padres show little room for improvement. They need an influx of talent, or this cute little window of competitiveness is over.

Just checked the PCL end of year standings:

The Beavers finished just under .500 and were 3rd to last in Runs Scored!!!

Yeah, we have a few cool minor leaguers, but really only Josh Barfield can help any time soon, and he plays 2B. Maybe he could be converted to CF or 3B...

And yet, just as much of a chance as anyone.

Fick is optimistically looking ahead.

"All you have to be is one game over .500 in every round of the playoffs," he said.

sixteen years pass...

I was wearing my Padres shirt yesterday and a woman stopped me on the sheet and said there was a recent jeopardy question about “the only baseball team that the name of the team and their city don’t have any English words”
