three months pass...
Which of the 11 records now out should I buy?

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Please, this is important. At least tell me what not to buy. I have the Forced Exposure site open and the idea of eleven slabs of afx vinyl living next to my record player is incredibly seductive.

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:29 (eighteen years ago) link

You will receive email confirmation of your order shortly.

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:42 (eighteen years ago) link

answer: none of them!!

is it too late to cancel your order??

vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Are all of these going to be compiled on a CD one day? If so, is it worth buying that CD?

donut ferry (donut), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:59 (eighteen years ago) link

some of the analord stuff is pretty cool but the idea of anybody shelling out for it is just ... wow, mindblowing.

i think the last music i bought in this vein were those astrobotnia EPs ... paying for this sort of thing is like paying for "new weird america" hippie psych folk freakout collective music.

there's just so so so much of this "boomkat dance music" floating around in mp3, 7", limited, weird format, CDR, collaboration ... it's like they're want us to stop giving a shit ...

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:01 (eighteen years ago) link

The price it would cost to get all of those Analord 12"s, I realized, is just under the same price I paid for the AC/DC vinyl remasters box set (15 albums at 180-grams each, with full liner notes, etc.) I like both AFX and AC/DC, but the comparitive worth.. I mean, holy shit.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:09 (eighteen years ago) link

my guess is that the afx stuff stands head and shoulders above the other "boomkat dance music" (i'm not exactly sure what the term means, idm and post-idm techno? that's pretty broad. i don't shop at boomkat, but i do browse that site occasionally -- also i suppose if you buy an afx record you know exactly what you are getting) i bought the first two of this series and still listen to them, but i haven't kept up it because there is simply too much other good stuff coming out. the idea of having all of these on vinyl is seductive and the tunes belong on vinyl, but yeah i guess it'd be overkill...i think it would be in rephlex's best interest to release a cd comp and i would definitely check it out.

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:27 (eighteen years ago) link

"think it would be in rephlex's best interest to release a cd comp and i would definitely check it out."

OTM. all the best tracks from the series on one cd would be great!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:41 (eighteen years ago) link

"boomkat dance" = all of those artists on planet mu and rephlex and other IDM labels who have suddenly developed this interest in back-to-old-skool dance techniques and who like to pretend that suddenly it is their job to save mainstream dance from itself, even though it is IDM and not mainstream dance that is staler-than-stale.

(i feel like i've made this argument so many times that it's verging on shtick)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Last I heard (which was several months ago- Rephlex almost never update their site, and when they do they tend to wipe out large sections of it) there would be a CD compilation "eventually" and it would of course leave out quite a few tracks (both to fit it all on one CD and to please the vinyl elitist collector scum).

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:58 (eighteen years ago) link

If I can find the time I'll do a Back to Mine: Analord and whittle it all down to 60 minutes or so. (Though something tells me this has been done by at least 140 other people on other boards/lists.)

He should've released each track on one-sided 12".

Just wait until every Analord track is remixed by every alias on Ai.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 01:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, it was a dumb move. 41 tracks, $100. No, I don't usually spend that much on a whim. Yes, I know idm has sucked for a long time now. But I recently re-discovered my love for afx and I ... I need to drink less coffee.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:42 (eighteen years ago) link

That's fine. Some people pay more than $100 for a single CD that's highly out of print. And I don't think that's even particularly insane (even though I probably should.)

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 06:00 (eighteen years ago) link

OK, time to get excited again!

Analord has some surprising champions.

If one believes Internet fanboys, #9 is storming futuristic acid unlike anything you've heard. Retro? Nein!

Or, it's a pale shadow of AB3. We'll see.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 17:41 (eighteen years ago) link

"i think the last music i bought in this vein were those astrobotnia EPs ... paying for this sort of thing is like paying for "new weird america" hippie psych folk freakout collective music."

Amen. That said, one of my favorite pieces of electronic music is "Acidophilus" off of pt. 1.

ugly and mean, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Wikipedia says there's a fake version of #9 out there. Somehow, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the version said Internet fanboys are drooling over.

That said, I like a lot of the tracks, particularly on the earlier discs, but the inevitable comp will probably suit most ppl just fine in the end.

that is the one with drool stains yah.

I have this sneaking suspicion that most of the people slagging it listened to one or two volumes, got bored and quit.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:55 (eighteen years ago) link

But what do i know, i've listened to zero so far.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:55 (eighteen years ago) link

more like richard d james = the stereolab of IDM

i mean, what is it going to take to shock him out of autopilot? luke vibert choking to death on his beard?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Stereolab's autopilot is way prettier than RDJ's right now though.

That's a perverse selection. Folks who haven't heard the full releases should be warned that it's hardly a "Best Of".

-- I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle_vagu...), August 17th, 2005.

funny, these are the two most interesting releases (album and series), for me, in RDJ's catalogue.

klopjob is an outstanding track.

Palpatean Mists, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 14:29 (eighteen years ago) link

god's sake! can't he just hurry up and sort his shit out and blow my mind away just one last time?

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:13 (eighteen years ago) link

x post

I don't know what I was getting at when I wrote that, cos I've enjoyed Analord and I don't hate Drukqs at all. I think I meant that those 2 releases have killed off RDJ's critical reputation, but I don't consider that a loss.

Still, the CD comp's got no "Steppingfilter", "Phonatacid", "Laricheard", "Analoggins" etc etc etc = odd choice of tracks.

I think the lack of innovatory fireworks on Analord is quite deliberate. Instead of trying to blow your mind, he's wriggling inside it.

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:22 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah lose tracks 3, 4, 10,.. and substitute Phonatacid, Laricheard, etc. and i'd be into it.

possibly stupid question but ppl keep saying analord 1-11 are aphex revisting himself and going back to an earlier period but after hearing all the analogue bubblebaths, i dont really hear that much of a similarity... anyone else feel like this?

plus, i think afx has gotten better as a musician and it shows on the new stuff.

I finally got the chance to hear the AFX Analord stuff, on "Chosen Lords".

If the selection of tracks for this "best of" really is bad, then the songs that are better must be mindblowing. This is one of my favorite releases of the year, by far.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Friday, 21 April 2006 07:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Theres some great music on this but the limited scope of the sounds here makes it hard to stay interested past the half way mark... Fenix Funk though, what an opener that one is!

fandango (fandango), Friday, 21 April 2006 11:04 (seventeen years ago) link

It does slow a little bit in the middle, but the last 3 tracks are wonderful, particularly XMD 5a, the closer.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Friday, 21 April 2006 11:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought it was an odd selection, not a bad one. There's stuff on the vinyl every bit as good as on CL, some probably better. But this stuff continues to baffle my sense of good and bad - it doesn't feel special somehow, but it's very very insidious.

Mingus Realty (noodle vague), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:34 (seventeen years ago) link

The compilation is good but you really need to get a hold of all of these (though Analord 9 is closest to his more recent screechy breakbeat stuff -- not my fave). I truly love the bedroom techno simplicity of the series.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Friday, 21 April 2006 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

it doesn't feel special somehow, but it's very very insidious.

this is OTM

fandango (fandango), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

i have all the analords as mp3's, if anyone is interested.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

i would rather listen to the analord tracks on separate 12"s than listen to a compilation of the 'best' ones on one CD. that is my feeling, anyway. i can only take the aphex twin these days in small doses. perhaps i am getting old? also the most 'housey' analord recs don't seem to be on this!
