When told by an admirer that his music sounded as thought influenced by Debussy, Sondheim responded, "It's Ravel more than Debussy." And indeed the cooler, more analytical Ravel does suit Sondheim more than does the warmer, more impressionistic Debussy (though he owned more Debussy than Ravel, in part because Debussy wrote more than Ravel).
