(also nb there are things that make what I just said untrue like presence of open lesions and/or vaginal tears or time of the month and general health just saying that so nobody jumps down my throat)

Here's a little on the m-t-c thing: http://www.cdc.gov/globalaids/global-hiv-aids-at-cdc/eliminating-hiv-infections.html

"Without diagnosis and treatment, about 35% of HIV-infected pregnant women will transmit HIV to their infants. Key interventions, including those listed in the right column, have reduced mother-to-child transmission in the United States to <1% (CDC, 2007), in Botswana to 3.6% (Tlale J, 2008), and in South Africa to 3.5% (MRC South Africa, 2011) in infants 4-8 weeks of age."

Though that doesn't say anything about the vaginal v. c-section thing. hmmm. I swear I read that. Will have to look later. CA - Will def write more!

That's fantastic. I love when we humans get things right re: medical advances.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:32 (ten years ago) link

well, that definitely makes this having a kid thing seem way less controversial to me. I mean, it's dumb, but not hand-on-head-wtf level that I was at

homosexual II, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:35 (ten years ago) link

yeah, there are seriously only a handful of babies born HIV positive in the US anymore, and it pretty much only happens when there is no prenatal care.

kate78, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:37 (ten years ago) link

Take a look at this handy chart of transmission statistics from the CDC: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/statistics/basics/

Male-to-male sexual contact is still, by far, how most HIV pos folks contract the virus. Women, it would seem, are twice as likely to contract HIV from hetero sex than men are.

kate78, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:41 (ten years ago) link

Which *I think* has to do with the way het sex works like women are exposed to more fluids as the receptive partner and the vag is one big mucous membrane and more susceptible to tears etc than the penis. I'm sure there are other factors too but I think those are big ones.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:57 (ten years ago) link

Btw that was why I listed HIV Last because out of all the shit going on here it's actually maybe the least concerning in the immediate future. Except for how it will effect him and her (and baby) emotionally directly and indirectly etc. it was just another level. Also they have been dating 4 mos! So much to take on.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 September 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

yes, re: first post. Same thing goes for receptive buttsecks, though, too.
However: she could totally still turn up HIV+. She's only been banging this dude for 4 mos. How motivated is this stoner without a job to stay on his meds?

kate78, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 22:07 (ten years ago) link

Yep. That's a very good point and one of the things that worries me. There's always a risk esp if he doesn't adhere to meds etc.

Also, this story just got worse.

I hope it's not twins.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 23:42 (ten years ago) link

No, thank God but he gave her the clap. She found out today after the ultrasound.

jesus fuck

I've been on the phone for the last two hours. She's devastated and now considering termination. Interestingly it looks like there are only 3 clinics on all of LI that perform surgical abortions. I guess that's not that surprising though considering that when I last volunteered at an fp clinic here I think there were only 5 in the entire state of MA.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 26 September 2013 00:13 (ten years ago) link

Oh that is terrible! I hope she kicks that dude in the nuts and never speaks to him again.

quincie, Thursday, 26 September 2013 00:16 (ten years ago) link

What do you tell someone when they're hysterical and asking why God is punishing them? It's so sad. Somehow, "idk but sometimes really shitty things happen to good people" isn't really cutting it.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 26 September 2013 00:18 (ten years ago) link

and now considering termination.

Sometimes people need a thunderclap (ha, see what I did there?) to wake them the fuck up to the situation. I seriously do not get this must-have-a-baby-at-any-cost mentality.

kate78, Thursday, 26 September 2013 00:22 (ten years ago) link

Oh shit. Late, but 1. obviously nothing your friend decides to do is going to be wrong, but 2. can't help but think that if she has the baby it's going to be easier and more fun on her own, with family/friends' support, and 3. I just learnt a whole bunch about HIV transmission - thank you!

i'm trying to remember what we said when i did pregnancy counseling, but all i can remember saying is that pregnancy is just a bio fact that can be perceived/dealt with in myriad ways, and its not healthy to view it as a punishment or reward. idk. im sorry youre having that stress. i get so clammed up in situations like that

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Thursday, 26 September 2013 00:50 (ten years ago) link

roxymuzak, I knew a guy who had connective tissue disease and managed it really well through diet and a change of lifestyle. I don't know the details or if he was on meds.

ENBB: wow, reading about this just made me tear up for the future child in this world. Is the mother HIV+?

Got my period for the 3rd month in a row at 27 days. Woohoo, feel like I'm getting somewhere, but ugh! I broke out with the worse case of acne in my life. It all seemed to subside once I got my period and is starting to rapidly disappear. I was also so irritable I wanted to crawl out of my skin, the day it started and 2nd day, yesterday, everything made me cry. I fucking hate this! I'm 42 and I feel fucking 14.

I don't want to keep seeing gyns or ob-gyns because it seems like this is the sort of thing no one is going to really explore. What the last gyn said sounded like a reasonable explanation. Only one way to find out and it is to kick August off the boob but she's way more emotionally attached to it than my friend's babies were...it's complicated.

*tera, Friday, 27 September 2013 09:10 (ten years ago) link

the mom is not HIV+, and apparently has great odds of staying that way, as does the baby. There's a (really informative, for me!) discussion of this upthread.

Glad things are evening out with your periods, even if you have to live through some annoying effects while things settle down.

ljubljana, Friday, 27 September 2013 18:07 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, what Ljub said. So long story short she found out a bunch more really horrendous shit the other afternoon, he left her and she terminated the pregnancy yesterday. Just a really fucking sad situation. Hopefully she can start to heal from this whole thing now. Still going down there next weekend.

Got a call from the gyn today, three weeks after pap. Test results came in and it was all weird and somewhat bad news. I wish I could go into more detail and get input, advise and opinions but unfortunately, too private to discuss on here. I wish there was a real room with you all in it right now.

aw shit, so sorry! I'm having weird emotional turbulence with my period this week, which is something that rarely happens to me.

Would you a trust a doctor who had this sort of thing behind him? I guess all doctors do or might? Anyway, getting a second opinion, just a lot of waiting from now until this is sorted and I get re-diagnosed.

*tera, Friday, 27 September 2013 22:57 (ten years ago) link

I would get a second opinion, yes. Docs get sued all the time but losing a med mal case (as opposed to settling, which I wouldn't hold against someone necessarily) is another matter. Also from the first case:

Based on this report, we believe that any damage that may be done to plaintiff's professional reputation is substantially outweighed by the harm that defendants and the public would suffer if plaintiff continues to practice medicine without additional training.

He's probably had additional training by now but no need for you to be the test case.

carl agatha, Friday, 27 September 2013 23:06 (ten years ago) link

The doctor was odd when I walked in there today with husband and baby. He gave me papers to sign that I didn't understand then proceeded to NOT tell me what they were for so I asked and he told me due to a test result I had to sign those papers and then gave me the test results and it was all jibberjabberblahblah while my head was spinning and i finally said none of this is making much sense right now, told me husband I had to get out of here, had to leave and told the doctor, sorry, waste of time, too much to process.

As soon as I got home I looked him up. I had a weird first visit and thought about it for days later. He refers to sex as "relations" and "relationships" and used those words the entire first visit. Then He told me my cervix was low and it could get injured during 'relations". Then he positioned two fingers in such a way to show me the ideal entry for "relationships". It was at that point that I was WTF?! Is this okay? I mean it's been awhile since I've had a male gyn and I started to think if a female had done that would I feel the same. Yes. I would think it was odd just maybe not as violated? But I walked out thinking, hmmm maybe it's just me. What was that? Was that necessary? I didn't say I had pain during intercourse just that I was there for irregular periods and at the moment thought maybe I was getting a uti because my abdomen felt tender. The nurse/receptionist/19-21 year old just stood at the far end of the room and was not looking and just standing there.

Today I realized that I didn't pay much attention to the instruments used and usually I hear paper ripping and it's a kit and how I never heard that and wonder how sterile everything was. It was an older office, lots of them in this area are though.

*tera, Friday, 27 September 2013 23:09 (ten years ago) link

Maybe discrediting the doctor is my way of getting through the next few weeks.

*tera, Friday, 27 September 2013 23:11 (ten years ago) link

Thanks, ca, definitely!

*tera, Friday, 27 September 2013 23:12 (ten years ago) link

My mom was just involved in a med malpractice suit and I've got v negative feelings abt it. Justice was not served.

Untt (La Lechera), Saturday, 28 September 2013 00:58 (ten years ago) link

Tera if I'm reading your account if that first visit correctly, it is time for you to find a new doctor ASAP.

carl agatha, Saturday, 28 September 2013 01:49 (ten years ago) link

That first visit sounds odd, but I'm not sure what exactly was happening. I definitely wouldn't go back.

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Saturday, 28 September 2013 02:57 (ten years ago) link

Not planning on it. Wish I had never gone there to begin with and driven the extra miles to the bigger town with more choices. Now stuck with this mess until I can get it sorted and it's not likely to happen within 48 hours so ugh.....

roxymuzak: It was during a pap test that he pointed out the cervix being low and the alternative point of entry. Puzzled me since that was never a concern of mine and I said nothing about pain during intercourse nor concerned about my cervix etc... So angry right now, nerves fried. Looking up a good place to call on Monday and starting over.

I've been able to never have go to a male GYN, I know some people like their man doctors just fine but for me it would be a last resort just this side of a social disease.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Saturday, 28 September 2013 03:53 (ten years ago) link

^^^ this. tbh i can't even deal with male GPs/PCPs

just1n3, Saturday, 28 September 2013 04:26 (ten years ago) link

*tera, just chiming in to say I'm so sorry you have a stressful situation to deal with, and NO ONE need ever settle for a doctor they don't like, especially a GYN! We've been socialized to think doctors are these special unicorns, when in fact they are a commodity that can be treated just like other commodities purchased by consumers! Don't buy a product you don't like!

quincie, Saturday, 28 September 2013 07:33 (ten years ago) link

Oh, ENBB, I'm sorry to hear about the extra crap you're friend is dealing with, and am sure she's sad about how things turned out. Tough situation. I hope she has some relief that it's resolved.

carl agatha, Saturday, 28 September 2013 12:35 (ten years ago) link

I lucked into a male GP that I love dearly and look forward to seeing until one of us dies but i am more comfortable with women for ob/gyn.

carl agatha, Saturday, 28 September 2013 12:38 (ten years ago) link

I've seen male providers for my paps. they always offer to refer me to a female provider, but I figure the dudes need the practice. in multi-provider practices, the female providers always get the paps punted to them.

kate78, Saturday, 28 September 2013 16:59 (ten years ago) link

quincie: love how you put it and viewing it that way from now on

I had one awesome male gyn. He was super intelligent and a real problem solver. I had him for two years then he retired. Saw the male obgyn he referred me too and that guy was a quack. Went to him once for a pap then a year later he phoned me at 11 or 12am from a hotel room to tell me where I could pick up my records, something about my records. It was creepy. He sounded drunk. That ended male obgyns until recently..ending it again.

CA - aw, thank you. She's doing surprisingly well considering. She even said yesterday (the day after the termination) was the first day she woke up and didn't feel horrible - that she felt likee a weight had been lifted somehow so I think that, even though in some ways this whole thing might not even have hit her yet, she's gonna be OK. I'm hoping hanging out and doing stuff next weekend will be helpful - we're already making plans.

I'm glad she's OK ENBB. Fingers crossed she gets over it quickly, and I know it's a lot to ask of the universe, but I hope she finds someone who's good for her and has a baby when the time's right.

On another subject, anybody here ever had mad random boob pain? I've got this sharp, sickening pain in my left tit, doesn't seem to be connected to the surrounding muscles or anything, and it's not sore-boob time of the month. Idk if I should be worrying about it. I mean, there's no lump or anything, no redness or swelling, it just hurts like hell.

ILX is sad (Zora), Saturday, 28 September 2013 23:40 (ten years ago) link

yes!!! and i was thinking about posting it in this thread a couple weeks ago!!

for me it's a burning/pinching/itching pain, right inside the boob tissue. usually only in one or the other, never at the same time. it's v uncomfortable, bc i want to scratch it, but it's too deep to get to, so i end up sort of squeezing/rubbing my boobs a lot.

sorry about your friend ENBB - it sucks that she felt like bc of her age she had to take this chance of having a baby. i have v strong feelings about this subject. i hope the decision is one she can be content with and move forward and find a better life for herself.
