I had a feeling it might be that way, felt very good being there today after getting the monkey off our back in 2011. In some ways I'd say Mayo didn't have a strategy. Dublin have won all their big games this year without obliterating anyone, all felt very subtly in control, nobody has ever said they played perfectly.

It is a big buzz tho, I was at tons of games in the 90s but I worked in a car park near Croker from 97 to the time I left for London.

Saw the 95 final in person and loads of losses, that team should have won way more. Nice to see another win after 2011.

Mayo the best team by some way all year, but otm about dub having a strategy to win and we not. Something to work on next year imo, this team not down nor out.

Gavin is the manager we've never had. Never seen such plotted control in GAA with Dublin. Still think this Dublin team are going to win more titles now, not every year or whatever.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Sunday, 22 September 2013 18:05 (ten years ago) link

Does it make sense that Mayo seemed to lack a finisher? I mean they had forwards to burn at times but not a person at either end in defence (apart from Hennelly who I wasn't aware of but wow @ the majority of his game tiday) or up front who just existed to shut things down.

Feature of the holistic approach i think, not a lot of use for that type of specialist. Tho o'connor has been that guy all summer until his collarbone gave and he clearly wasnt in shape today

Both half back lines killed each other which only makes weird sense cos both were shit in earlier games.

idk what encapsulates mayo gaa better, the no show first half at croker, the rifle-under-chin red card, the resurgent display once all hope had died or the chucking it upon realising that the resurgent display had carried us out in actual front

mayo god help us

"The mayo player everyone is raving about is the redeveloped aidan o'shea, always a fielder of note but physically reconditioned over the summer to a cross between longcat and a sherman tank. His fetching of the high ball above a forest of thuggery is rivalled as a sight this year only by his can't-fail method of seeking out opposition defenders to run over on his maraudings."

Like I said, I thought the sending off was harsh. You can let players get away with dumb stuff like that in GAA surely, it wasn't malicious. Kerry that bit cleverer with the ball, I fear Mayo have blown their chance.

sending off was otm according to an ethos that sez you can't react to thuggery like I said I can't ever love gaa because they want skill to be beaten up by village hero bullies at every level of their football

nakh is the wintour of our diss content (darraghmac), Sunday, 24 August 2014 20:23 (nine years ago) link

Yeah football has been in a bit of a mess and the steps to sort it out have only added more confusion and lousy refereeing. Then there's the overly defensive safe play, yr Donegals and so on. Great game today though, mainly down to Mayo just saying fuck it and going for it,

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Sunday, 24 August 2014 20:30 (nine years ago) link

still think the coach that can get a team of fellas using space say 10% as well as the average championship team in soccer will change gaa forever

ref had two different approaches in that game, strange

no-one really commented on it either. joe brolly talking about how mayo lacked "ruthlessness" which was straight bollocks imo. kerry look fitter and less leggy than mayo over the 2nd half of ET though.

Same every year. Will believe when we are actually tested. Lost the first test to Donegal last year, with the same manager who was incredibly naive on the day.

Gavin out. Pathetic bottler strategy and we still nearly won. We were afraid of losing and played within ourselves, even after we'd basically won it. player for player Dublin should win, if they abandon whatever cagey post-Donegal panic they played with today. Can't be sure of anything tho based on that.

Like what is worse than a manager getting it so wrong one year that that influenced him to go too far the other way and get it wrong the year after. Ref hadn't a breeze how to ref the tackle for either side throughout.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Sunday, 30 August 2015 20:48 (eight years ago) link

agreed on all that

dub had that, we were out.

can't call replay, both teams poor today and may or may not have a performance in them

ref a funny mix of fussy and laissez faire all round

deejerk reactions (darraghmac), Sunday, 30 August 2015 21:20 (eight years ago) link

pretty frustrated with how it went to be honest. the moment that keeps coming back to me is when paul flynn attempted a glory point from beside the sideline with 20 yards of space in front of him and brogan or mcmenamin free - we were 6 or 7 up at that stage and it was a point at the very least, could well have been a goal.

dublin were bizarre, no clear strategy but scored nearly every chance they got, whereas mayo missed a lot of good chances, enough to suggest dublin should have let them shoot instead of all those fouls. i honestly felt the ref didn't really know what to do when 2/3 dublin players surrounded a mayo guy, he'd just run into them and fall over and it'd be a free. not saying dublin didn't foul at times, but the anomalous number of free kicks was like it was a rugby match or something in which dublin failed to understand the referee's "interpretation" of the tackling.

i think gavin is a farce by now but i would be fairly confident dublin should win the replay. the main consolation of the draw is that i'm home by chance for the replay and a mate texted me immediately after to offer me a ticket. used to work near croker for literally every game for 7/8 years when i last lived in dublin (8 years ago) so it's been about 17 or 18 years since i got to see a game.

Mayo p wilfully stupid in their choice of kick/pass, last week and at the start of this.
