Not yet. There are about 13m ps3/360 consoles in just the the uk at the moment, and their 13m sales are worldwide. But I think they were projecting total lifetime sales and this is just 3 days in, so who knows.

before launch they were saying how they expected to sell to half of all ps3 and xbox owners on the first day or something wild. did this happen?― NI, Saturday, September 21, 2013 10:22 AM (13 minutes ago)

I read the game cost $265M to produce ($137M dev + $128M mktg) and sales on Day One were claimed at $800M.
$800M/$60 = 13.3M units
According to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_game_consoles
PS3 = 80.4M units soldXbox360 = 78.2M units sold
13.3M / (80.4M +78.2M) = 8.4% penetration in 24 hours (day one).
1st week sales are unavailable yet but 3 day estimates are well over $1B. Will need to top close to $5B to approach 50% penetration on existing console estimates.

no local storage for photos is dumm
also must be the first gta to not spawn 100 of the same car around you whenever you manage to steal an amazing ride

Anyone done that rampage mission with Trevor? Amazing.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Saturday, 21 September 2013 19:08 (ten years ago) link
yeah the rampages are really well done
just found out you can buy some pretty nice cars (and tanks) ($3mil) by mailorder
― cozen, Saturday, 21 September 2013 19:17 (ten years ago) link
The only other one I've done is where Michael smokes the joint and sees aliens everywhere, feel like the joy and surprise elements have been missing from rampages since maybe the very first GTA, but it's taken this one to make me realise that.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Saturday, 21 September 2013 19:20 (ten years ago) link
After playing a bit more, I think Trevor is less Waingro and more Frank Booth as a methhead.

was p surprised the michael rampage didn't end with him waking up to a four star wanted rating with 30 hapless dead civilians around him
find myself doing a lot of simulated mid-life crisis shit with Michael, solemnly wading waste-deep into rural water bodies at 4am a la Reggie Perrin, engaging in pointless shouting matches with happy young couples downtown, etc

phew. about 25% through.
one of my favorite coincidental music moments so far was when i stole a van as part of a mission, a bunch of police were alerted, i changed the radio station and the song just happened to be a few seconds before the incredible drop in afx's 'windowlicker'
― Z S, Saturday, 21 September 2013 21:22 (ten years ago) link
i agree that playing as trevor tends to provoke much more irrational violent behavior when playing than the michael or franklin. i found myself veering out of the way to obliterate people on their atvs or golf carts, whereas with the other two i tend to just try to get to wherever i'm going as quickly as possible while avoiding things like that.
but i like playing as the other two! great balance between the three characters so far.

is there a cheat code to skip all the story bullshit and have everything unlocked so i can do the fun part of the game?
― adam, Sunday, 22 September 2013 00:16 (ten years ago) link
Trevor is terrible, but his terribleness becomes quite comic as things progress. Theres a scene with him and Michael driving somewhere where Michael goes on a rant about T's appearance and proclivities that.. well, I dont want to spoil the punchline, but I actually laughed out loud.
Also holy shit, the massive battle at the bank. Shiiiiit.

there is so much dope shit about this game, i wish rockstar would hire a good writer.

There are def some terrible dadjoke things in there. Certain scene with Franklin and a talking dog comes to mind.

think shooting rabbits is more my speed than pulling out teeth.
Plenty of animals to kill up north.
In GTA 4 you could play in sandbox mode over xb live, so I'm sure this will be an option eventually.

bloody flight school. Anyone know the secret to getting gold in the 'land on a bridge' ? I can't see what I'm doing wrong, it keeps giving me silver medal.
love the music scores when doing some of the missions, fits perfectly.
and that trevor ball bag scene, i just happen to be using Trevor with no top on so he was totally naked. not pretty, but fucking hilarious.

want to play this so bad that i think reality is warping around me, on friday i walked into a bar and the music was 1/4 into 'across the tracks' exactly like when you go into woozie's casino in san andreas
worst thing was i didnt even fully apprehend it at first, just that my strolling in felt all too natural

Yeah pretty sure there's a sandbox mode when MP starts up-- but the whole map is unlocked right from the beginning, and you don't have to play that much for all the minigames to get unlocked.
Is this the first GTA in a long time where the minigames seem like they'll be worth playing in their own right? I played 9 holes of golf yesterday--aside from the fact that there's only those 9 holes to play, it's just as deep and satisfying as playing Tiger Woods-- more kinda since you can walk from shot to shot, something I've always wanted to do in a golf game-- and you can beat freak out after you miss a two-foot putt and beat your golf club against a tree or pour gas all over the green and set it on fire, a mechanic conspicuously absent from most golfing video games
hold down L on the d-pad and it brings up a radio selection wheel which will show you the current track.
what custom plates did people get?

After just under a week of solidly playing it I'm still discovering new bits and pieces. Who knew there was a racing track? Completely deserted though - as was the 'Vinewood Bowl - I wonder if these little unused places will feature in a mission, or are they just superfluous, but nice, detail?
― hewing to the status quo with great zealotry (DavidM), Sunday, 22 September 2013 18:35 (ten years ago) link
Yeah I think it's basically a certainty that it's getting robbed. What would be REALLY cool is if you rob it during a horse race.
― polyphonic, Sunday, 22 September 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link
paleto bay heist was p.good. game can feel like it's on rails at times during the missions but they give you just ~enough~ control to undermine that
FIB stealing all my cash is some bullshit though. when can I earn some serious money
― cozen, Sunday, 22 September 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link
dunno if i'm on early hype but this feels easily the best gta ever, and i loved iv (which i know people hated) but also all gtas. every element is so intensely there, and there's no real effort to get into it. personally i enjoy tatting trevor all over with "fuck cops" etc and then getting a huge beard/mullet/wraparounds, pluis beyond all this the screwing around is amazing. and the music is an incredible selection, whatever station you put on you're either hearing old classics or discovering stuff you never knew about.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Sunday, 22 September 2013 20:41 (ten years ago) link
This is my favourite GTA, definitely
But: my favourite GTA soundtrack was GTA 3. The off-track Moroder, the opera hits, the game-specific pop stuff and I'd never heard any of the other tracks anywhere else before or since. I dunno, I preferred it when the music contributed to the world-in-a-bottle rather than hearing Rihanna or Stardust on licence.
― flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 22 September 2013 20:56 (ten years ago) link
Oh yeah, I forgot to say. Before this came out I was hoping you would be able to ride horses in the countryside, a la RDR. Obviously not, and fair enough, but seeing the racing track makes me wish there had at least been a side game where you could enter a horse race.
― hewing to the status quo with great zealotry (DavidM), Sunday, 22 September 2013 21:18 (ten years ago) link
just done the laslo mission and god the writing is so bad it's shameful. can see the cogs turning, "now we have to make this plot development happen so lets do it in the most simplistic 101 dumbfuck hackneyed way possible". also getting hugely bored of the exposition car journeys. on the other hand lamar is a great and genuinely funny character. also lold at that wade guy a bit, esp the "i just want to be wade" line
― NI, Sunday, 22 September 2013 21:28 (ten years ago) link
gotta say i quite like the trevor stuff, it's moronic but it has no pretensions otherwise. plus i got him a "fuck the cops" tattoo on his midriff and ran around killing people with just y-fronts and a camo waistcoat on, after getting him a nice mullet/massivebeard look going on.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Sunday, 22 September 2013 21:31 (ten years ago) link
when thinking fashion never forget ammu nation
and yeah it's impressive and great and everything but as far as a huge leap forward it's not that much different from gta4 in how it looks and works. story is more fun but that's not saying much. the difference from vice city/san andreas to gta4 was pretty huge, but this just feels a bit more polished than the last one.
― NI, Sunday, 22 September 2013 21:33 (ten years ago) link
dunno, for me the actual gameplay is just so much deeper. it really is way more inside my mind than other gtas.
