what's the point of buying or spending money on cars in this game when there are literally thousands of cars driving around at all times and it's really easy to destroy the car you're driving

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 19 September 2013 22:04 (ten years ago) link

or have it just disappear...

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 19 September 2013 22:06 (ten years ago) link

first impressions:

the tangerine dream music for the missions is amazing.

it all looks incredible. has anyone used the cinematic view much? you couldn't use it on missions or whatever but if you hold it, it gives you these incredible sweeping overhead shots.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Thursday, 19 September 2013 22:15 (ten years ago) link

ahaha, as Franklin I absent-mindedly stole the first car I saw parked outside of Michael's house after a mission with him, get a call three minutes later saying THAT BETTER NOT HAVE BEEN YOU THAT STOLE MY CAR

a female tourist on top of Chiliad said that her job was getting to her and then stood there for a few seconds and sprinted off the edge of the mountain

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 19 September 2013 22:53 (ten years ago) link

I bought a garage on a whim (never really played these enough to get into ~owning~ stuff) and it's pretty useless but I've been improving Franklin's car and it's pretty bad ass. Might start a collection.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 20 September 2013 00:08 (ten years ago) link

Im watching GiantBomb's random playthru of the game. Is it safe to say that Rockstar has finally switched from basing the game on film to tv series instead?

Your Own Personal El Guapo (kingfish), Friday, 20 September 2013 01:17 (ten years ago) link

man losing the cops in this game is a real boring chore

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 20 September 2013 03:34 (ten years ago) link

I assume all the out of the way places will factor in to later missions but the giant island/open world thing isn't that interesting if you don't need to be there as it turns out? Drove around, went off-roading, rode the tram, feel like that covered most of the things to do out there.

The cars would just be for fun - get one of the cheap old cars that are around and turn it into a low-rider, etc.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 20 September 2013 05:33 (ten years ago) link

I quite like the hunting game, until I hear the snarl of a damn mountain lion...

Fun things to try out, if you haven't already:
Jump onboard a passing freight train, it will take you on a tour of the island and some of the views in Blaine County are great. If you're bored you can always take pot shots at animals, people, things.
Get a small boat in the Alamo Sea and take it down the white water rapids-y Cassidy Creek.
As Trevor inhale some 'gas', which can be found on his porch. irl lol.

I'm enjoying this a lot more since unlocking Trevor, even though his cut scenes can be pretty horrible to watch. The main problem with IV for me was that Niko was such a reluctant bad guy that I felt guilty making him do crazy stuff around town, and that sapped a lot of the fun out of the game (somehow - I don't understand at all why I cared either way but yeah, couldn't help it). There's still a bit of that with Franklin this time round, less with Michael, but Trevor's ideal. Randomly mowing down a beach full of sunbathers feels completely in character for him.

JimD, Friday, 20 September 2013 11:43 (ten years ago) link

Got busted by a (female!) cop - they don't take your guns but do take ALL of your ammo :(

Z S, Friday, 20 September 2013 13:21 (ten years ago) link

I think losing the cops is great in this game! It's the first GTA where it actually makes sense-- they're pursuing your car, not "you", so you can play strategically-- anytime you break line of sight the cops are on "patrol" mode and you can change cars or lay low in a house or alley and lose them.

antexit, Friday, 20 September 2013 13:41 (ten years ago) link

Yeah! It's more evasion than anything else. It has been finicky, being able to lose 3 stars in a minute by ditching a car and cowering behind a bush.

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:04 (ten years ago) link

We've been playing a game that we've tastefully titled "Major Lawrence" where you go geisterfahrer round the main highway loop on a motorbike for as long as you can

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:08 (ten years ago) link

i was just playing a mission where i had to hijack a big clunky van that didn't drive very fast, so i could barely outrace the cops, and of course i couldn't switch vehicles, and i literally spent half an hour driving around the map bored and agitated

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 20 September 2013 14:33 (ten years ago) link

they've captured the feeling of LA really well xp

乒乓, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:34 (ten years ago) link

ha

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 20 September 2013 14:36 (ten years ago) link

yeah driving in LA is terrible, making a video game where that's a big part seems like...torture

Euler, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:40 (ten years ago) link

well it's not like traffic is a problem

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 20 September 2013 14:48 (ten years ago) link

I'm finding the chases are among the funnest parts of the game, actually. It's really exciting to have ditched the car somewhere and be hiding under a porch or in an alleyway while the police are searching the area, with your guns out, stressing out as they pass right by, saying DON'T MAKE ME KILL AGAIN-- or sticky-bombing the area where the cops will park to draw you out if they figure out you're there, or, as I did last night, parking the car outside a parking garage and leading a trail from the gascan right up the garage to where you're going to hide

antexit, Friday, 20 September 2013 15:21 (ten years ago) link

one of my friends was p blown away that a bunch of his lil graffiti characters around la have been put in the game

i'm trying to join the ilx crew right now!

Z S, Friday, 20 September 2013 16:15 (ten years ago) link

Last night I found the in-game stock market. I have a very robust and diversified portfolio now.

polyphonic, Friday, 20 September 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

I've only had this explained to me today, but apparently there are two in game stock markets, one is unique to your game and reacts to things you do but the other is a true public one which inevitably has just been going up and up, so people who put money into that on Tuesday are already MINTED as a result.

JimD, Friday, 20 September 2013 16:27 (ten years ago) link

Just spotted that the Paparazzo's camera is clearly a Nikon.

michaellambert, Friday, 20 September 2013 17:20 (ten years ago) link

i have to admit i don't really understand the crew thing.

http://i.imgur.com/X3DfAc5l.jpg

why is it filled with max payne 3 stuff?

Z S, Friday, 20 September 2013 17:50 (ten years ago) link

the american apparel spoof on your phone's internet browser is quite funny/partly offensive.

loving the discovery of fave tunes in this, just roared away from the cops with "music sounds better with you" playing.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 20 September 2013 18:00 (ten years ago) link

what I don't understand about the crew thing is why I'm the crew leader. I didn't make this crew and I haven't posted here in three years.

antexit, Friday, 20 September 2013 18:49 (ten years ago) link

huh that's funny. i just figured you started it!

goole, Friday, 20 September 2013 18:51 (ten years ago) link

my assumption was that it had max payne stuff all over my screen cos the last socialclub thing i did was that game, and i don't even have GTA5 yet. maybe not?

Just stole my psychiatrist's Porsche and drove to a strip club, a setback in therapy #GTAV

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 20 September 2013 19:23 (ten years ago) link

I am beginning to feel this GTA boasts some deeper level of immersion than previous ones.

Also the pause/map music is incredible.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 20 September 2013 19:25 (ten years ago) link

I didn't make this crew and I haven't posted here in three years.

Haha! Well, I made the crew and you were first to accept an invitation. Then I realised you could only own one crew but I needed to make another. So I left and rejoined, which I guess transferred ownership to you.

I think the Max Payne stuff is just because they haven't turned GTA online on yet so MP is still the only game that fully supports crews.

JimD, Friday, 20 September 2013 19:31 (ten years ago) link

Also the pause/map music is incredible.
it's haunting my dreams alright

Stuck on PC. grrrrrr.

I have been wanting to replay Vice City, but I recently bought a 360 controller and on PC half the buttons DO NOT WORK and I went through a lot of keymappers, none of which worked. Finally I found this mod

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=162687746#114052

Apparently it works with San Andreas as well.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 20 September 2013 19:39 (ten years ago) link

If you don't use that mod, your right analog stick (camera), the D-Pad, and the trigger buttons all do not work! Also, for some reason it would not work in "Windows 98 compatibility" (don't ask why this was set, I don't remember) I had to turn off compatibility mode.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 20 September 2013 19:41 (ten years ago) link

I noticed in the opening creds that it's Tangerine Dream, the pause music and mission stuff. Really want to hear it all.

Felt pretty seedy in the strip club, it was a fact finding mission.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 20 September 2013 19:49 (ten years ago) link

When does the online stuff activate?
