is it a function of (my) age and attention that makes the gta3 liberty city still feel so real and vibrant (in my memory at least) or is it some sort of uncanny valley thing wrt gta5 los santos feeling a little sterile?

that said, i jumped a fence by the roller coaster and hid behind some machinery as two cops were searching for me, their vision cones sweeping back and forth past my hiding spot, some tense shit until they gave up. pretty fantastic.

adam, Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:53 (ten years ago) link

I think there's something eerily quiet and still about GTA3 when you go back to it after playing anything from San Andreas onwards.

I'm also coming round to the idea that the driving in this is better than in IV, have been continually surprised by how controllable the vehicles are when hitting corners at high speeds

This is kind of disappointing to me - all the cars seem perfectly usable, part of the fun in IV was getting stuck with a land barge that couldn't corner to save its life at crucial moments.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 19 September 2013 15:30 (ten years ago) link

I went "smart" instead of "loud" for the first heist and I'm glad I did, Trevor's missions are giving me enough "loud"

you got access to trevor before the first heist? i've just completed it and no sign of the guy

Well I was talking more specifically about your high-speed supercars that could be a right pain on IV if you couldn't corner for shit. Still finding plenty of the bigger vehicles are steering like cows on this tbh

really dig a lot of the animations and the ragdoll stuff. the abrupt transition from like, purposeful jumping animation to limp spiraling ragdoll is hilarious.

that video is cracking me up - the punch animation and the hats flying off are both perfect

never understood why the AI doesn't respond to "oh you punched the guy next to me unconscious"

cool how you can sometimes strike up rudimentary two-way conversations with strangers with the d-pad like in San Andreas - accidentally smart mouthed someone into shoooting at me then got ran over at v high speed while running away

DJ Mehdi came on the radio as the sun was setting and I got kinda bummed out about him

Spent $500 getting Franklin's car repaired after it got smashed up during one of the spontaneous event missions, smashed it up again on the way home when another one came up, then got it in the garage and a brand new version of his car had spawned next to it when I woke up - do not repair your car, kids

the AI in this responds forks & will pick a fight with you / call the police / run off screaming

I used iFruit to design a bright orange car with a General Lee horn, which is supposed going to be deployed to the garage the next time I play the game.

what's the point of buying or spending money on cars in this game when there are literally thousands of cars driving around at all times and it's really easy to destroy the car you're driving

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 19 September 2013 22:04 (ten years ago) link

or have it just disappear...

first impressions:

the tangerine dream music for the missions is amazing.

it all looks incredible. has anyone used the cinematic view much? you couldn't use it on missions or whatever but if you hold it, it gives you these incredible sweeping overhead shots.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Thursday, 19 September 2013 22:15 (ten years ago) link

ahaha, as Franklin I absent-mindedly stole the first car I saw parked outside of Michael's house after a mission with him, get a call three minutes later saying THAT BETTER NOT HAVE BEEN YOU THAT STOLE MY CAR

a female tourist on top of Chiliad said that her job was getting to her and then stood there for a few seconds and sprinted off the edge of the mountain

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 19 September 2013 22:53 (ten years ago) link

I bought a garage on a whim (never really played these enough to get into ~owning~ stuff) and it's pretty useless but I've been improving Franklin's car and it's pretty bad ass. Might start a collection.

Im watching GiantBomb's random playthru of the game. Is it safe to say that Rockstar has finally switched from basing the game on film to tv series instead?

Your Own Personal El Guapo (kingfish), Friday, 20 September 2013 01:17 (ten years ago) link

man losing the cops in this game is a real boring chore

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 20 September 2013 03:34 (ten years ago) link

I assume all the out of the way places will factor in to later missions but the giant island/open world thing isn't that interesting if you don't need to be there as it turns out? Drove around, went off-roading, rode the tram, feel like that covered most of the things to do out there.

The cars would just be for fun - get one of the cheap old cars that are around and turn it into a low-rider, etc.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 20 September 2013 05:33 (ten years ago) link

I quite like the hunting game, until I hear the snarl of a damn mountain lion...

Fun things to try out, if you haven't already:
Jump onboard a passing freight train, it will take you on a tour of the island and some of the views in Blaine County are great. If you're bored you can always take pot shots at animals, people, things.
Get a small boat in the Alamo Sea and take it down the white water rapids-y Cassidy Creek.
As Trevor inhale some 'gas', which can be found on his porch. irl lol.

I'm enjoying this a lot more since unlocking Trevor, even though his cut scenes can be pretty horrible to watch. The main problem with IV for me was that Niko was such a reluctant bad guy that I felt guilty making him do crazy stuff around town, and that sapped a lot of the fun out of the game (somehow - I don't understand at all why I cared either way but yeah, couldn't help it). There's still a bit of that with Franklin this time round, less with Michael, but Trevor's ideal. Randomly mowing down a beach full of sunbathers feels completely in character for him.

I think losing the cops is great in this game! It's the first GTA where it actually makes sense-- they're pursuing your car, not "you", so you can play strategically-- anytime you break line of sight the cops are on "patrol" mode and you can change cars or lay low in a house or alley and lose them.

antexit, Friday, 20 September 2013 13:41 (ten years ago) link

Yeah! It's more evasion than anything else. It has been finicky, being able to lose 3 stars in a minute by ditching a car and cowering behind a bush.

We've been playing a game that we've tastefully titled "Major Lawrence" where you go geisterfahrer round the main highway loop on a motorbike for as long as you can
