yeah but i can't figure out if you can switch what you wrote - it asks you to confirm which message you want to send but so far i've only seen one choice

Mordy , Wednesday, 18 September 2013 22:12 (ten years ago) link

You can't switch it out. It's just like the email in the last game.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 22:36 (ten years ago) link

Things I've liked on observing this so far:

- go for a swim in your clothes, theyre slick wet and dripping when you get out
- the skytram car thing up in the mountain
- it rains (and that affects your grip on the road driving)
- the plane graveyard out in the desert

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:15 (ten years ago) link

That plane graveyard has some insane level of detail going on

re that wet clothes thing, have you noticed if you only go into the water halfway it will actually only wet you halfway

bah cant do the social thing coz my live account dont work no more

Played a lot tonight, can honestly say the driving is heaps better than IV.

Found my first hidden 'package', won't spoil anything for anyone else.

Just lots of fun, even doing the missions now. Lots of random mission (and they're interesting too). It's pretty hectic what with the extra character and people on the map and contacts to ring.

I played tennis, it was okay. It wasn't the travesty side game that a lot of rockstar stuff is. I don't like tennis though. I'll try the golf tomorrow.

Have died lots. You really can't do much illegal stuff without people getting upset.

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 19 September 2013 02:49 (ten years ago) link

ha i feel kinda sickened by the vast sweep of this, played for like 5 hours tonight, i am wasting my non-virtual life &c

Tried bmxing up the mountain, got almost to the top and bike gave up. Tried walking, and tumbled pathetically almost all the way down to near death.

Taken me all of four hours of gameplay to get bogged down in stat-building mini-games, I spent hours last night doing the the shooting range challenges out the back of Ammu-Nation, trying to get good shooting skill and cheap guns. Unapologetic, thoroughly enjoying myself.

I'm also coming round to the idea that the driving in this is better than in IV, have been continually surprised by how controllable the vehicles are when hitting corners at high speeds

driving gets noticeably better when you level up and trick out your car with street/race brakes & turbo

the main thing I dislike so far is that there doesn't seem to be that much reason to explore the world on foot

I frequently see interesting buildings with open doors, ladders up the side etc but whenever I get off to have a look there's nothing there

I know there are 'emergent' non-scripted activities dotted around the world but would have it killed rockstar to make on-foot exploration a bit more interesting?

cozen, Thursday, 19 September 2013 12:26 (ten years ago) link

Have just discovered that if you stop at the traffic lights and rev your engine then occasionally the guy in the lane next to you will try and race you as you pull away. Great feature

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Thursday, 19 September 2013 13:16 (ten years ago) link

Coming down from the tram car summit, there is both a new, gravelled trail cut into the mountainside, and also an "old trail", like, a washed out no-longer-used trail that dovetails in and around the new trail. Has jumps and things. It was such a neat detail I was left gobsmacked. If you haven't ridden the tram up and dirtbiked down I would recommend it.

- ? missions, I took a tow-truck one (boring) and another where Michael smokes weed and then [spoilers] (just across from Simeon's showroom).

- I went "smart" instead of "loud" for the first heist and I'm glad I did, Trevor's missions are giving me enough "loud"

- The plane flies great and this island is beautiful.

is it a function of (my) age and attention that makes the gta3 liberty city still feel so real and vibrant (in my memory at least) or is it some sort of uncanny valley thing wrt gta5 los santos feeling a little sterile?

that said, i jumped a fence by the roller coaster and hid behind some machinery as two cops were searching for me, their vision cones sweeping back and forth past my hiding spot, some tense shit until they gave up. pretty fantastic.

adam, Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:53 (ten years ago) link

I think there's something eerily quiet and still about GTA3 when you go back to it after playing anything from San Andreas onwards.

This is kind of disappointing to me - all the cars seem perfectly usable, part of the fun in IV was getting stuck with a land barge that couldn't corner to save its life at crucial moments.

Well I was talking more specifically about your high-speed supercars that could be a right pain on IV if you couldn't corner for shit. Still finding plenty of the bigger vehicles are steering like cows on this tbh

really dig a lot of the animations and the ragdoll stuff. the abrupt transition from like, purposeful jumping animation to limp spiraling ragdoll is hilarious.

that video is cracking me up - the punch animation and the hats flying off are both perfect

cool how you can sometimes strike up rudimentary two-way conversations with strangers with the d-pad like in San Andreas - accidentally smart mouthed someone into shoooting at me then got ran over at v high speed while running away

DJ Mehdi came on the radio as the sun was setting and I got kinda bummed out about him

Spent $500 getting Franklin's car repaired after it got smashed up during one of the spontaneous event missions, smashed it up again on the way home when another one came up, then got it in the garage and a brand new version of his car had spawned next to it when I woke up - do not repair your car, kids

the AI in this responds forks & will pick a fight with you / call the police / run off screaming

I used iFruit to design a bright orange car with a General Lee horn, which is supposed going to be deployed to the garage the next time I play the game.
