can't wait. i'm buying all hype right now.

early word that RS has really upped the quality of mission design has me thinking wistfully at my mailbox already

watched the torture video on eurogamer earlier, gotta say that kinda grit doesn't get me excited.

Euler, Monday, 16 September 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

yyyyyeah, having watched that video, i'll pass

already composing excuses why i'm ok with this in my head

goole, Monday, 16 September 2013 21:44 (ten years ago) link

refusing to watch the vid so I'm talking out my ass a little bit wrt the realism or otherwise of this torture, but I've seen it likened in places to the 'No Russian' mission from whichever COD that was, and I was always kinda ok about just playing through that level and not thinking about it. Not sure if this makes me a moral derelict or just reflects how little basis I feel these games actually have in real life, even now

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Monday, 16 September 2013 22:19 (ten years ago) link

they make a minigame of h jon benjamin pulling out a bound man's tooth with a pair of pliers and it appears to take quite some time and is followed up with a fratboy "torture doesn't really work" bullshit cop-out so I don't think Rockstar are trying to have you pretend you're not doing what you're doing. based on my understanding of the franchise and of the surrounding material this isn't some specops the line "are you not entertained" ish either. i think it is what it is and what it is is a realistic minigame where you pull out a bound man's tooth with a pair of pliers which leads to another guy making an azerbaijani/azervagina joke so everyone who's buying this should probably know that up front.

the majority of the commenters on that eurogamer article are primarily complaining about spoilers so i can't imagine it'll matter one way or another

Can't believe they added torture to this murder sim

i have done + witnessed some horrific stuff in the video game medium and i'll be damned if that stops now

Mordy , Monday, 16 September 2013 23:09 (ten years ago) link

I'm not sure anything you can do in this or any other GTA game will ever come close to touching the evil that was in my soul the day I plugged Mordin in the back during Mass Effect 3. Now that shit was harrowing

seems fun as hell so far, few niggly crap bits like the dog-training and the tow-truck missions and the shooting range stuff that get in the way of actual gameplay (& fun). can't imagine the stock market stuff is much better. minor moans though, so far seems a ton more enjoyable than the relentless misery of gta4 (not incl the 2 great dlc games).

NI, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 03:36 (ten years ago) link

I liked the look of the stock market stuff! But then again I play games like SimCity.

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 05:33 (ten years ago) link

For the first time ever I went to get it at midnight, stood in line for 30 minutes, etc.; arrived home to find out that my PS3 controller is fucked.

Mine didn't arrive in today's post. Why did I order it online like a mug when I can just go out right now and buy it in a shop?

Managed to get to the first save point without crashing (I have done that intro part about 7 times now).

Had a pretty fun time driving around, swimming in the waves (quite gorgeous actually). Just crashed again. Will have to get the 360 version now.

The thing I notice right away is how very like San Andreas original it seems, compared to how different GTAIV was to the Liberty City of old.

Night time is beautiful looking.

Just over an hour away from finishing at work and I'm now getting badgered by a mate I've not seen for over a month to go to the pub and watch the football with him. Anyone got any ideas for polite ways to say "Fuck off, I value this game more than I value our friendship right now"?

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:20 (ten years ago) link

i think i might be one of the few that find rockstar games boring as hell. i was playing red dead last night and as beautiful as it looks i just end up shooting everyone because its so boring (possible cross-ref w/ disgruntled shootings thread ;)

¯\(乒_乓 )/¯ (am0n), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:26 (ten years ago) link

I'd agree with some of the other games they've produced. GTA stands slightly apart from the other Rockstar games imo. I played both RDR and L.A. Noire and really enjoyed them both so long as the main narrative lasted but found myself at a total loose end once that was finished.

Conversely I've always found that the greatest joy in GTA, no matter how good the story, is to rampage about just doing your thing - not necessarily going on ludicrous killing sprees every time, but in those little found moments where it all aligns perfectly - the right song coming on as you hit the freeway in your supercar, cops approaching from all sides and a thunderstorm raging, or helicopter dogfights round the Statue of Liberty or w/e.

The reason I'm jonesing for this game so bad is that by all accounts this kind of set-piece is facilitated more than ever

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:39 (ten years ago) link

I think I'm beginning to realise that I need to make time in my life for this game.

bah crashed again, lol. Right in the middle of driving my articulated lorry through the hills to the Convoy tune.

prop forward turned celebrity chef (Ste), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:47 (ten years ago) link

Should get some work done I guess

prop forward turned celebrity chef (Ste), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:47 (ten years ago) link

i can def see getting into the sandbox aspect of their games but in all the ones i have, gtaiv, rdr and la noire the missions in general aren't that fun. i guess some of the minigames are lol, the rdr bird shooting challenge was like duck hunt without the laughing dog. supposedly they've revamped missions in gtav tho right? im sure i'll end up caving in and getting it at some point.

p.s. the torture scene is pretty offensive in that its a long cutscene with qtes thrown in

¯\(乒_乓 )/¯ (am0n), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:47 (ten years ago) link

Apparently the new triple-protagonist setup really ramps up the pace of the missions, theoretically you ought to be able to skip between the different characters depending on which one is doing the most interesting / enjoyable thing. Also revamped shooting / driving mechanics, which should help things along on the big gunfights, which were admittedly pretty tedious on GTAIV

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:52 (ten years ago) link

that all sounds good if true, esp the shooting / driving stuff. curious to see how good the online multiplayer is

¯\(乒_乓 )/¯ (am0n), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:02 (ten years ago) link

in gta3, vice city and san andreas i would put in the 100% health cheat over and over again because so many of the missions were shitty and i hate being frustrated and just wanted to see what else would happen. true gamer confessions.

slam dunk, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:09 (ten years ago) link

Addition of checkpoints in missions has been a long time coming, planning to try and do my first playthrough cheat-free if poss

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:11 (ten years ago) link

in san andreas i would just play the pool mini game over and over. true gamer confessions.

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:18 (ten years ago) link

the tennnis mini-game in this is great, but real easy once you suss it out. will be great playing that online with a mate

NI, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:26 (ten years ago) link

been playing for ages and still no sign of trevor. initially thought i'd got some weird broken copy but turns out trevor only turns up after 4 hours of mission gameplay or something. kindof excited as all the reviews rave about playing as his character

NI, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:28 (ten years ago) link

hope i can ditch all the shooting range, dog training crap without it affecting my stats so much. one minor gripe is that there's a *lot* to keep tabs on, almost gets confusing with the multiple characters rpg stats stuff

NI, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:29 (ten years ago) link

We've started preparing your shipment for delivery and it should leave our facility in the next few hours to a few days.

lol no regrets about this, at all

goole, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:32 (ten years ago) link

is there any sign of having to "maintain relationships" like in gta4? hated that so much, that and all the driving to get to missions. I love the mechanic in jc2 of being able to parachute to locations you've already visited

Euler, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link

oof, just remembered another IV annoyance: taking cabs everywhere after a while b/c it was quicker than driving

goole, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:37 (ten years ago) link

i think there's a bit of that relationships stuff yeah, ive had texts from people saying lets hang out, etc. just ignoring that crap. rockstar lot really need an editor with some of this stuff - going sitting in a restaurant with someone IN A GAME is really not much fun at all. been on the fairground rides, pretty zzz and im expecting the same from the movie theatre stuff (though i'll be surprised if they top the sheer awfulness of the gta4 comedy club bits). i'm just highlighting the bad shit here btw, there's so much AWESOME don't let it put you off
