OK!

I'm excited to go to new york

yeah Soho also has all the chains (Uniqlo, Gap, BR, J Crew, American Apparel, Levis Store etc.)

you may want to try Century 21 in lower manhattan, good place for discounted luxury stuff. some of it is STILL expensive but you can get, like, $200 shirts for $75. I usually only come out of there with one or two things and you need to leave yourself a lotta time to browse but the stuff I get there I'd never be able to afford if I just went to that brand's store in soho or whatever.

dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:04 (ten years ago) link

I've gotten some pretty sick ties at Century 21 (Brioni and the like) for good prices -- you have to dig a bit for the ones that aren't ugly or weird colors, but you can find steals.

feel like i havent found something i liked at century 21 in so long

lag∞n, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:07 (ten years ago) link

it's usually a fuckin mess in there but I went last week and they've changed around the men's floor a lot and dialed back the chaos

dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:11 (ten years ago) link

yeah i was gonna rep for century 21. their shoe store is good too

"Dave Barlow" is the name Lou uses on sabermetrics baseball sites (s.clover), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

oh didn't see that Hurting already mentioned C21

although it seems like women have better luck there than men

maybe in general ... my wife hates the place though ... never finds anything, won't really go there anymore.

dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:41 (ten years ago) link

I mean I haven't been in a while, but there's a lot of weird sort of eurofashion-looking stuff there that might technically be a good deal but is just way outside my style.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:27 (ten years ago) link

it was somewhere on ilx that someone described it as the place where you go, get into some good deals, and then discover you just walked out with a bunch of shiny shirts.

but it's not bad for some stuff, true

chinavision!, Friday, 13 September 2013 18:33 (ten years ago) link

lol otm

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:35 (ten years ago) link

I bought my most colorful sweater ever there, and some otherwise awesome-fitting jeans that had what I could only describe as a silvery Hugo Boss "plaque" on the belt line on the back, but as long as you didn't tuck a shirt in you couldn't see it

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:37 (ten years ago) link

oh there are def a lot of things there where I'm like hey that shirt's kinda nice and then it turns out there's a giant tiger stitched on the back. pro tip, don't buy those shirts

dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 18:40 (ten years ago) link

I know! But I'm not very good at shopping, and after three or four stitched tiger reveals I just fall to my knees and throw up my hands in despair.

also, not that long a commute to lincoln center -- G train transfer to the A at hoyt st gets you there in like 40 minutes or so, ime.
street parking not a problem around here either.

caek, Saturday, 28 September 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link

Where? NYU, Columbia, NJIT?

I Am the Cosimo Code (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 28 September 2013 16:24 (ten years ago) link

columbia. fixed term faculty thing. not TT. lots of teaching and not much research, which suits me fine.

caek, Saturday, 28 September 2013 16:26 (ten years ago) link

Cool. Have you met Chris W*gg*ns?

I Am the Cosimo Code (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 28 September 2013 16:32 (ten years ago) link

people weren't kidding when they said autumn is nice here btw

caek, Saturday, 28 September 2013 16:40 (ten years ago) link

Yes, it is. And yes, I know him, he is a really nice guy. I met him at NYU when I was a grad student and he was a postdoc. Haven't seen him too much recently, he is pretty busy these days though, has three small kids.

I Am the Cosimo Code (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 28 September 2013 16:42 (ten years ago) link

ha I literally just saw him on college walk I think.

caek, Saturday, 28 September 2013 17:25 (ten years ago) link

Think the last time I saw him was a few years ago when his first kid was a few months old and I went with Chris and ilxor tipsy mothra to see the similarly-named fellow Columbia professor and fellow trombonist Chris Washburne play his old Sunday night gig at Smoke.

Don't understand why all the other ppl in new york aren't in the queue for standby partridge tickets with me and six other British-looking men in their 30s

caek, Saturday, 28 September 2013 18:21 (ten years ago) link

Oh ja I'm sure it's a dreadful film, don't get me wrong. Coogan is here.

caek, Saturday, 28 September 2013 18:34 (ten years ago) link

plz tell me he was greeted with a mass shout of "ah HAAAAAAH"

Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Monday, 30 September 2013 15:50 (ten years ago) link

OK so we will be staying in Crown Heights/mostly at Lincoln Center Wed-Sun. I will be trying to watch as much as possible, so not sure if I'm up for a formal FAP, but then maybe many of you don't know or care who I am anyway. Possible drinks or whatever around festival or CH sounds good though.

Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Monday, 30 September 2013 16:15 (ten years ago) link

CH totes do-able, most of us live somewhere around or within spitting distance.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 30 September 2013 16:52 (ten years ago) link

couple of minor ahaaahs, and also someone in the audience tried to coax him into doing his pacino impression. he demurred.

definitely down for swift halves with adam this week.

caek, Monday, 30 September 2013 17:50 (ten years ago) link

Adam, what nights/hours work for you? Let's throw an idea out now so ppl can plan?

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:53 (ten years ago) link

Or start a fb msg thingy so when anyone updates it we can all see?
