is this yr whiney g parody where you just string nouns and adjectives together that make nominal sense?

not some dude poking a Line 6 pedal with his dick (sarahell), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:20 (ten years ago) link

I thought that but then I did some research

there's a television show called "Peaky Blinders"

wtf

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:21 (ten years ago) link

No it is nothing like as awesome as that sounds

script is a joke

his LIPS !!! (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:22 (ten years ago) link

the name is incredibly stupid considering this is big budget with cillian murphy etc.

didn't watch it as had other stuff to do, is it really shit?

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link

Im not gonna pretend i looked beyond the haircuts without already having decided but jesus yes awful shit

his LIPS !!! (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:44 (ten years ago) link

this is one of those things that does make me want to read about the actual history of the gangs - 19th century (okay this is 20th, just) criminal gangs were fully mental and aren't discussed enough outside of that awful cabbage that Scorsese made and shit like this - but on the other hand the phrase "BBC drama" in 2013 tells me to go and do something more enjoyable instead

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:46 (ten years ago) link

tbf this passes for a pretty original idea in UK TV Dramaworld nowadays

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:48 (ten years ago) link

but is probably not a patch on Gangsters from the mid-70s

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:50 (ten years ago) link

it's called peaky blinders cos apparently this gang used to keep knives in the peak of their caps.

still i reckon giving the show that title is going to have a significant effect on how many people watch it.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:51 (ten years ago) link

just watched 5 mins - it's actually straighter than it ought to be, if anything

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:58 (ten years ago) link

I don't see how you can create a show called Peaky Blinders and not have the cast burst into a tap number within the first five minutes

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:59 (ten years ago) link

Why cant ppl stop writing and greenlighting and acting in this shit tho

his LIPS !!! (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:00 (ten years ago) link

this shit that... you haven't watched?

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:19 (ten years ago) link

this thread is reminding me that I need to catch up on Broadchurch

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:21 (ten years ago) link

If a tree fell in the forest and it was terrifically poorly planned, written, executed, acted and coiffed it would still fuckin annoy me were i not around to see it ronan

his LIPS !!! (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:40 (ten years ago) link

That seems to be the case alright.

his LIPS !!! (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 September 2013 22:40 (ten years ago) link

David Tennant and child murder. You probably wouldn't like it.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Thursday, 12 September 2013 22:46 (ten years ago) link

Aren't there two ripper ones? Each with one of the dashing young white dudes from MI-5/Spooks? Waiting for the one where Richard Armitage bests both his predecessors in the dashing young white Spooks department and does a series where he plays Jack the Ripper as a sorta sympathetic guy.

not some dude poking a Line 6 pedal with his dick (sarahell), Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:56 (ten years ago) link

oh god we're less than 2 years away from an edgy drama about Jack the Ripper helping Sherlock Holmes to solve murder cases by day whilst carving his way thru Whitehall by night aren't we?

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 September 2013 06:30 (ten years ago) link

incidentally i'm pretty sure that from what i've seen dmac has totally mischaracterized this Peaky Blinders thing, altho i wdn't go so far as to say it's must-see TV

pro - always happy to hear West Midlands accents in non-comedy context; actually interesting choice of subject matter; not about a group of blue-collar workers who win the lottery

anti - trying to peg "hit American series" comparison on it; especially when the writing I saw was closer to How We Used To Live from 80s TV for schools; just show When the Boat Comes In again you bastards it pisses over everything you've commissioned in the last 20 years

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 September 2013 08:54 (ten years ago) link

Not heard of When the Boat Comes In, it sounds like an early c20th version of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet

It climaxed at the Spanish Civil War and it featured endless brilliant class war zings so not quite but ballpark

more like if Upstairs Downstairs had been written by old school Trade Union guys

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 September 2013 09:45 (ten years ago) link

my father's a life-long Marxist and Upstairs Downstairs is his all-time favourite show, exposing the workings of the class system &c

Neil S, Friday, 13 September 2013 09:47 (ten years ago) link

also itself a symptom of decadent bourgeois capitalism, of course

Neil S, Friday, 13 September 2013 09:47 (ten years ago) link

Upstairs Downstairs is pretty political and zingy itself, again it feels so much more ambitious than anything the Beeb try nowadays

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 September 2013 09:49 (ten years ago) link

there was a remake recently wasn't there, which made Downton look like Battleship Potemkin iirc

Neil S, Friday, 13 September 2013 10:21 (ten years ago) link

yeah i knew there was a remake but i figured it was safely ignored

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 September 2013 10:31 (ten years ago) link

Fucking hell. Just watched this and agree with Dmac. Beeb "Just fill it up with bustling, over stylised sets and a couple of name actors. Fuck the writers".

weirdest part was that despite it having all the trappings of prestige tv there were less sets and exteriors than an average episode of corrie

pee-wee and the power men (bizarro gazzara), Sunday, 7 January 2018 16:50 (six years ago) link

Season 4 was actually the best one to date - still not qualifying as good, but consistently entertaining and pacey.

Apart from when they are trying to prop up Tory cunts, The BBC doing a fucking tobacco enema up their own fucking corpse is always the fucking 2nd worse thing.

calzino, Monday, 8 January 2018 01:22 (six years ago) link

This seems to be a case of people paying attention to a mediocre show simply because it fits the mould of binge-watching boxset television, the format seems to be more important than the content tbh.

Whiney Houston (Tom D.), Monday, 8 January 2018 10:39 (six years ago) link

^^this is true

i was kinda intrigued when i first heard about it, because i almost always enjoy Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy. but it seems kinda cheap and pointless to a degree. it feels like an alt-right fantasy, complete w/the haircuts and the key adversary in the first couple of seasons being an frustrated + sexually inadequate straight-arrow. maybe it gets better, idk.

omar little, Monday, 8 January 2018 17:10 (six years ago) link

i'm annoyed how it ruined a perfectly decent Nick Cave song for me.

omar little, Monday, 8 January 2018 17:11 (six years ago) link

i liked the first season quite a bit, second was less good but still ok iirc but I dropped out after that. Cillian Murphy's great, I don't think the show works at all without someone as magnetic as him in the lead. Sam Neil is fucking terrible and ruins almost every scene he's in. really it's a Godfather redux more than anything else, everything is about "family" which honestly I liked, it cuts against the lone anti-hero perspective of most prestige TV.

evol j, Monday, 8 January 2018 17:21 (six years ago) link

it’s competent pulp i guess (accents aside) but it’s frustrating how it ends up hinting at more interesting stories than it ends up delivering, at least in the first season i’ve seen so far

like, i’d be much more interested in seeing how aunt polly ran the family business during the great war, or a more nuanced exploration of the attraction of communism for war veterans

pee-wee and the power men (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 8 January 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link

i love sam neill generally but his character exists to be the Waingro here, someone super horrible to make the peaky blinders look good in comparison. and it's a terrible role. i don't think the show is necessarily completely horrible, it's watchable enough. but it gave me the sons of anarchy vibe, like we're supposed to be extremely impressed by these MEN. it's better than SoA, though. maybe.

Helen McCrory is good xp

omar little, Monday, 8 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

yeah, sam neill is doing his best but he’s not got much to work with, and it doesn’t help that he’s delivering his lines in an accent he hasn’t mastered

pee-wee and the power men (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 8 January 2018 17:29 (six years ago) link

to put it kindly

pee-wee and the power men (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 8 January 2018 17:29 (six years ago) link

I really don't miss Neill's character (spoilers I guess).

Helen McCrory is good

Poll is probably the best character.

oi this is shite but i'm still watching it. just finished the third season which was shite.

lmao at the final scene: "you're going to prison, you're going to prison, you're all going to prison!" and everyone runs from the room yelling "fook you you fook!"

omar little, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 23:59 (four years ago) link

Tommy Shelby's wife getting knocked off and immediately forgotten except as fuel for crazed sex with an insane russian duchess and to have a home for children named after her. also she was killed because his brothers are morons and he kinda let that slide.

paddy considine as the most evil priest ever and whose second job as a government agent made zero sense to me since it was never explained.

alexander siddig as the most saintly painter ever. i guess we've seen the last of him though.

however this season looked a lot better, a bit less cheap.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 23 October 2019 00:45 (four years ago) link

I’m not sure how the peaky blinders have consolidated enough power to wind up headquartered in a gangland downton abbey, since their entire strategy seems to have been to enter rooms loudly and smash glasses and maybe slap a “fooker” across his “gob”.

omar little, Wednesday, 23 October 2019 00:54 (four years ago) link

Who is more ridiculous as an Italian gangster, Noah Taylor or Adrien Brody? I can’t decide.

I don’t even know what Tom Hardy is doing.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 23 October 2019 00:54 (four years ago) link

The only “good, actually” scenes of S3 I think involved Hardy. The negotiation scene in his office and the very spittle-y confrontation scene in the final episode.

omar little, Wednesday, 23 October 2019 00:57 (four years ago) link

I think him having seemingly wandered in from the revenant and just changing accents and outfits is a plus here, he’s the only performer who seems to be having a good time.

omar little, Wednesday, 23 October 2019 00:58 (four years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Sat through the latest season bascially because my OH fancies Cillian Murphy and it really is utter shit. Dimly lit long boring talky scenes interspersed with people walking in slow motion with like The Fratellis or something playing in the background.

chap, Thursday, 7 November 2019 17:39 (four years ago) link

You could probably cut together a montage of all the scenes of the peaky blinders walking in slow motion through a smoky and/or fiery surrounding and it would be three hours long. Also the way they walk is a microcosm of the entire dumb show, it’s this real OTT idiot swagger.
