HOW you can all put up with his voice i have no idea
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 09:26 (ten years ago) link
reminds me of the Artful Dodger in Oliver!
― iMacaroon dragoons (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 09:43 (ten years ago) link
His voice is fairly anonymous and not actively offensive but I really don't get his intonation at all, there's a bit where he sings "throw ipp on yr shizz" and I genuinely have no idea what accent he's going for.
The first Bloc Party album is a good call actually because the 80s Big Music aspect of that record is often overlooked in favour of the post-punk revivalism.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:23 (ten years ago) link
I suspect if this had come out in 2006 it would have elicited a monumental mass eyeroll.
Not sure about the production and mixing on this though, I wish there was a bit more space - what's the point of having massive 80s drums if there's no space for them to echo round?
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:25 (ten years ago) link
It's the stupid accent and the WHINE
Like fucking placebo or something
Lyrics are dumb and overwrought btw
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:26 (ten years ago) link
Calling this out for being too whiny is like calling Sade out for being too tasteful or something.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:31 (ten years ago) link
this kind of mid-Atlantic meets mid-Thames non-denominational whine/mumble is an improvement on the lumpen fake-localisms of a lot of UK indie from the last 10 years so i think you have to look at as a way for a band to escape that trap rather than be sad cos the guy doesn't have some great soul voice
having said that it wd be weird hearing a band making these kinda musical moves and having a singer with a great soul voice
― iMacaroon dragoons (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:45 (ten years ago) link
but you might end up with what Tony Hadley sounds like in his own head and that doesn't seem like a win
― iMacaroon dragoons (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:46 (ten years ago) link
i think id connect with the band about 50 percent less if the guy didnt sound like a mash of every whiney 2nd wave emo singer
― max, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 12:21 (ten years ago) link
It's true, though: if Hayley Williams sung these tunes the album would be A+.

god i have tried sooooo hard to get into that paramore album and i don't respond AT ALL to it, there's nothing wrong with how it sounds but i don't hear the hooks or any way in at all
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 14:14 (ten years ago) link
which i think is actually BECAUSE of her voice which is just...there
the 1975 covered a 1D song today on Radio 1

lol at anyone referencing poole (though "car" is probably the second-best indie rock song called "car" ever)

Lex not liking this is not shocking. Him not hearing the hooks in the Paramore album is a bit befuddling. It's got hooks for days.
― Greer, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 20:55 (ten years ago) link
I have tried so many times with that album but to no avail, every time I start wondering when it'll end about halfway through and I can never remember any of it when it ends. It's like if ashlee simpson made a really samey, really long, really one-note and personality-free album
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 22:14 (ten years ago) link
Like I can hear exactly how it should hit the spot for me but the songs are just not there

Is this album something I need to hear if I didn't like all their early stuff, or does this band still just sound like regurgitated Bloc Party?
― Evan R, Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:40 (ten years ago) link
evan : i actually think this thread answers that very question
― mark e, Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:44 (ten years ago) link
I didn't mean to be rude or lazy; I just read the posts under the "now skipping" jump and still couldn't really get a sense of whether this is something people are repping for or not
― Evan R, Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:47 (ten years ago) link
no worries evan.
i did not mean to be snappy .. tis not my groove.
to answer your question : this thread implies that they are indeed ripping off bloc party (to a degree)
several ilm'rs love this album with a passion rarely seen in bits and bytes round these parts, the rest it's a resigned : 'meh ... '
for the record i'm with the 'meh .. '
― mark e, Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:53 (ten years ago) link
ha I never really got too deeply into Bloc Party so my reaction to it was "this seems to be like a more successful version of what I think the Franz Ferdinand album is trying to do", an opinion I formed by playing three songs off of FF, getting bored, and switching over to The 1975
― WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:01 (ten years ago) link
bloc party had that one decent song

It doesn't take much for me to dismiss British buzz bands. I've been burned so, so many times (and the funny thing is I usually like the influences those bands are playing with, but they almost never add anything to them)
― Evan R, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:05 (ten years ago) link
And I liked that first Bloc Party album, too, but I don't need a second helping of more of the same. British post-punk is some of my favorite music ever, but the revival stuff gets more dire every year
― Evan R, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link
Given my first exposure to the band was listening to the EPs without prior exposure to the singles I'm finding people's reference points really curious even when objectively they make sense - but it's hard for me to conceive of a band who make songs like "Haunt // Bed" or "fallingforyou" as "ripping off Bloc Party".
