i stan for bloc party's first two albums but i can't for the life of me understand why dance producers use him as a vocalist
the big instrumental moments on this sub focus track are pretty effective though

Original video for 'Robbers' seems really 90s indie alternative vibe. I think they recorded it as The Big Sleep, or Talk House?

i stan for bloc party's first two albums
as i said, the lack of shame is astounding
no one should stan for anything about bloc party

anyway this 1975 guy's voice is the fucking worst, actually unlistenable. would rather hear his mother singing

in case no-one was aware, the limited edition includes all the eps on the second disc.
― mark e, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 12:50 (ten years ago) link
i agree with most of that and would add Jimmy Eat World
― max, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 12:51 (ten years ago) link
that list somehow looks even worse all in one place. the actual worst music ever
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 12:53 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, not really the hippest set of influences there.
― MikoMcha, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 12:53 (ten years ago) link
The cover of Chris Malinchak is also a weird move.
― MikoMcha, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 12:55 (ten years ago) link
Someone also mentioned John Waite and Prefab Sprout.
― MarkoP, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 13:02 (ten years ago) link
max's list is making me wish i unleashed the sizable amount of r&b this record recalls for me but maybe that's more obvious/actually embedded in their pr

(or, IDK, these songs are the 7" originals of JLCs extended 80s 12" expansions rather than the sow's ears they more often than not were)
for instance i'd say this is otm but to jlc i'd add basically any new romantic 12" and any jam/lewis 12"
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 September 2013 13:25 (ten years ago) link
the expansiveness of a 12" mix drawn back into four minutes
There's Postcard in Girls, too.

Add The Big Pink to that list imo
― monotony, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 01:06 (ten years ago) link
Foals and Snow Patrol also
Oh wait, somebody beat me to the snow patrol ref.
anyway looking at that list this seems like it would be the grossest album ever but it's really not? hooks piled on to infinity. these guys were not on my radar at all, so thanks ilx!
― monotony, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 01:09 (ten years ago) link
One band that also came to my mind was the earlier stuff by The Devlins. Particularly songs like Alone in the Dark and Someone to Talk To.
― MarkoP, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 01:58 (ten years ago) link
genuinely no idea if adding foals and snow patrol is 4 real or designed to make me even more allergic to them
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 09:26 (ten years ago) link
HOW you can all put up with his voice i have no idea
reminds me of the Artful Dodger in Oliver!
― iMacaroon dragoons (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 09:43 (ten years ago) link
His voice is fairly anonymous and not actively offensive but I really don't get his intonation at all, there's a bit where he sings "throw ipp on yr shizz" and I genuinely have no idea what accent he's going for.
The first Bloc Party album is a good call actually because the 80s Big Music aspect of that record is often overlooked in favour of the post-punk revivalism.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:23 (ten years ago) link
I suspect if this had come out in 2006 it would have elicited a monumental mass eyeroll.
Not sure about the production and mixing on this though, I wish there was a bit more space - what's the point of having massive 80s drums if there's no space for them to echo round?
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:25 (ten years ago) link
It's the stupid accent and the WHINE
Like fucking placebo or something
Lyrics are dumb and overwrought btw
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:26 (ten years ago) link
Calling this out for being too whiny is like calling Sade out for being too tasteful or something.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:31 (ten years ago) link
this kind of mid-Atlantic meets mid-Thames non-denominational whine/mumble is an improvement on the lumpen fake-localisms of a lot of UK indie from the last 10 years so i think you have to look at as a way for a band to escape that trap rather than be sad cos the guy doesn't have some great soul voice
having said that it wd be weird hearing a band making these kinda musical moves and having a singer with a great soul voice
― iMacaroon dragoons (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:45 (ten years ago) link
but you might end up with what Tony Hadley sounds like in his own head and that doesn't seem like a win
― iMacaroon dragoons (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:46 (ten years ago) link
i think id connect with the band about 50 percent less if the guy didnt sound like a mash of every whiney 2nd wave emo singer
― max, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 12:21 (ten years ago) link
It's true, though: if Hayley Williams sung these tunes the album would be A+.

god i have tried sooooo hard to get into that paramore album and i don't respond AT ALL to it, there's nothing wrong with how it sounds but i don't hear the hooks or any way in at all

which i think is actually BECAUSE of her voice which is just...there
the 1975 covered a 1D song today on Radio 1
