Loving it on first listen. <3 these guys so much.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Monday, 2 September 2013 23:56 (ten years ago) link

'relevee' (carl craig rmx) - deep house trappings + more aggro synth settings = this record.

spring has sprung the grass is risible (haitch), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 01:40 (ten years ago) link

that is a hell of a recommendation

Really looking forward to this.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:44 (ten years ago) link

Ditto. Is it out physically on Monday or just digitally?

digitally. physical in October.

or at least for the vinyl. not sure about the CD

dmr, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 16:46 (ten years ago) link

Streaming on the Guardian. The comments were pretty much all abuse when I checked. Not that that's any indication.

owenf, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 16:47 (ten years ago) link

just took a look at the comments and was expecting "what is this crap it's not music!" and instead got "this sucks, I only like their early stuff!" guess I underestimated the hipness quotient of the Guardian audience.

all the comments complaining that they bent too far toward a run-of-the-mill DFA sound are off base to me but I guess I could see it if you prefer their industrial side to their dancey side

dmr, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 17:01 (ten years ago) link

So this thing's up on Spotify today, excellent so far imo.

weird, I guess they moved it up or something, I did end up doing the pre-order and in the email with the digital download it says the vinyl will ship later this week. on the webpage where they're selling it it still says it ships in October, haha. I've heard that getting vinyl pressed up in the U.S. is kind of a moving target nowadays as far as getting a solid date.

dmr, Monday, 9 September 2013 21:49 (ten years ago) link

none of the singles worked for me entirely on their own but for some reason i'm really loving the album

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 20:40 (ten years ago) link

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 21:24 (ten years ago) link

It's just so bleepy bleeping. My favourite of all types of music probably.

kraudive, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 21:36 (ten years ago) link

Still don't think I ever heard anything by these guys but I guess I should now.

Also I want to know what electricsound's initial posts were about! Um, if he wants to share.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 21:37 (ten years ago) link

shiiiiiiit this track 'C Side' on the release with Peter Gordon, blissful.

THIS RECORD

I listened to this once and wasn't quite feeling it but I probably shouldn't have listened immediately after the new NIN. Think I need to get into more of a Carl Craig mindset with it.

Matt DC, Friday, 13 September 2013 09:55 (ten years ago) link

I love it. Don't understand the naysayers at all. Lots of fun.

owenf, Friday, 13 September 2013 10:09 (ten years ago) link

worked from home this morning and took the opportunity to blast this really loud. it sounded dope.

dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 18:16 (ten years ago) link

one month passes...

So I can't really get my head round this band, but feel like I might not be listening to the right stuff or something... I'd certainly like to give em another go. Can anyone recommend a top 10 tracks?

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Friday, 1 November 2013 15:07 (ten years ago) link

I'd say listen to the album. They are harsh and industrial, the DFA thing but more experimental. I never not find "fall back" to be exhilarating tbh.

subaltern 8 (Michael B), Friday, 1 November 2013 16:19 (ten years ago) link

What I've heard so far sounds like late-80s/early-90s industrial rave, a bit like Cabaret Voltaires but I wasn't sure what it was supposed to be much beyond that.

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Friday, 1 November 2013 16:40 (ten years ago) link

Go and see them live. They're probably pound for pound the best consistently good live band I've ever seen. Certainly at the dancier end of things that's true... it's impossible to make a reasonable comparison to, say, Public Enemy or SunnO))) for example.

Doran, Friday, 1 November 2013 22:30 (ten years ago) link

I like the FF record ok, but MAN I like the Carter Tutti Void one a bit more. What a classic.

mr.raffles, Saturday, 2 November 2013 04:32 (ten years ago) link

I agree with that.

their entire discography is like tops 25 tracks and they just released an album...

flopson, Sunday, 3 November 2013 02:15 (ten years ago) link

someone had to say it

mh, Sunday, 3 November 2013 03:19 (ten years ago) link

This is certainly a difficult record but it's winning me over. The singer was in KaitO, a real good guitar band from about 10 years ago.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 3 November 2013 14:27 (ten years ago) link

I don't know, I tried with this but I think they're really boring. Just flat, one dimensional, seemingly using a lot of presets. To say it quickly runs out of steam would be an understatement. They barely seem to be trying by the end of the album.

Position Position, Sunday, 3 November 2013 14:30 (ten years ago) link

this album is probably good in some way

pervilege as a meme (contenderizer), Sunday, 3 November 2013 16:12 (ten years ago) link

obviously a little biased here as i put it out but "beachcombing" with peter gordon never ceases to take me to strange and bewitching places. i really hope they do another collaboration with him.

i'm still undecided about the album but that's partly because i don't really engage with albums very much. however, "how you say" blows me away and sounds monolithically great on a dancefloor.

stirmonster, Sunday, 3 November 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

"how you say" is the highlight for me too by some distance.

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Sunday, 3 November 2013 18:58 (ten years ago) link

Doran, I was at the quietus show but had to leave just as they started cos of the last train. Really regret it

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Sunday, 3 November 2013 19:05 (ten years ago) link

Not sure what "presets" you get on drum kits, guitars and home built modular synths tbh.

I found the album a bit of a bummer at first. Having been a cheerleader of theirs for a few years, I was pretty underwhelmed initially but I've got to say I love it now. I get the impression that a lot of people I've seen moaning about this album on tQ or DiS or wherever (not here) seem to be disappointed because they didn't turn in some indie friendly dance thing that sounded like F*** Bvttons meets Cut Copy or whatever. This album is pretty severe and works in the same way that a lot of minimal music works... loud, on drugs, on the stereo when you're not doing anything else, in a club, driving... I can't think of a worse album to have on shitty PC speakers at work or in the background while you're doing something else.

However, out of all of my favourite albums of this year so far, this is the one where I have most sympathy with people who hate it. I totally get why they do.

Doran, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

man i pound this album, listen to it all the time

to the point that my bf is like "again? really?"

the tune was space, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:31 (ten years ago) link

That should say "works well in the same settings under the same conditions that a lot of minimal music works well in/under..."

XP: Ha ha ha. Suck it up The Tune's BF.

Doran, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:34 (ten years ago) link

Can anyone recommend a top 10 tracks?

All of their stuff sounds good to me but

Two Different Ways
Fall Back
How You Say

If you don't like those, give up, imo.

dmr, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link

I think maybe a lot of the vaguely confused handwringing about this album has come about from like 18 months of weird awestruck hype from a certain kind of rock hack. Maybe you have to see them live to appreciate that kind of fervour but it always struck me as over the top. But as a result a lot of people were disappointed with this when it turned out to be "just" a collection of really good Carl Craig rips.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:42 (ten years ago) link

BTW anyone who was hoping this would turn out to be rockier/more EBM might get a lot out of the Gesaffelstein record, which I've been caning alongside this all week.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:45 (ten years ago) link

loved the live clips at the top of the thread. feral, chaotic, hypnotic and cool as hell. disappointed to hear them box it up in such a timid fashion.
