jackets really seem like the kind of thing you need to try on in person

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:10 (ten years ago) link

well you can always return it

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link

if you know yr size and can ascertain the general cut you can make a good guess

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link

tbh i don't really understand what a blazer in this sense is, except a blue suit jacket without its trousers. is it just slightly more deconstructed cut, cotton mix rather than wool?

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:12 (ten years ago) link

btw that rag and bone jacket i bought totally doesnt fit me and is unreturnable if anyone wants to make me an offer lol

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:12 (ten years ago) link

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:16 (ten years ago) link

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:17 (ten years ago) link

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:19 (ten years ago) link

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 19 August 2013 20:21 (ten years ago) link

42, i paid $200

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:21 (ten years ago) link

its $700 retail iirc

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:22 (ten years ago) link

i have had good luck w suit supply so far, am about to buy a tux from them, will update.

adam, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:25 (ten years ago) link

who's actually purchased a suit/suits in nyc, and how much did you pay?
I need at least one more suit. I bought a j crew thing (brown suit, slightly lighter weight) that probably came to $500-600 or so, but had to have a lot of tailoring done on it (for about $100), and it's still just not quite right.
I want a dark grey or navy suit in a more conservative cut. but I'm tall and have no shoulders. nothing fits that well.
:(

chinavision!, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:28 (ten years ago) link

I guess I wanted to ask if anyone's done suitsupply for one thing.
but I worry that their suits might tend to have that too-small look to the jackets that has also been the trouble for me with j crew.

chinavision!, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:29 (ten years ago) link

depends on your sizing. i'm on the small side, and years ago i bought a suit from APC on Mercer that is still the most perfect fitting suit I've ever worn. still going strong after 7 years. don't know what their stuff is like now, though.

blazer is i think a more specific term than sportcoat. it seems like blazer should maybe be confined to the solid navy/metal button garment, but there's a whole world of sportcoats including navy ones.

call all destroyer, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:32 (ten years ago) link

there are tons of suits at macys, most of them are prob pretty blah but you can find some cool stuff too, bloomingdales etc likewise

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:33 (ten years ago) link

yeah i think this might be a british/american thing

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:33 (ten years ago) link

blazer means the thing w the shiny buttons in america too i think

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:34 (ten years ago) link

a bit pricey for me, but I might take a look. been thinking of just going through suits at bloomingdales too.
I found an amazing burberry suit at a consignment shop yesterday for $350, but I just couldn't commit without knowing how easily it would be able to be tailored. the arms and chest were definitely a bit too wide.
did I blow it?

chinavision!, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:35 (ten years ago) link

i dont think there is like an official difference between blazer, sportcoat and suit jacket

max, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:36 (ten years ago) link

and I know you're supposed to get the arms dead on, but my tailor took in the arms on the j crew suit?

chinavision!, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:36 (ten years ago) link

"my tailor"

chinavision!, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:37 (ten years ago) link

"took in" as in made them narrower or shorter?

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:37 (ten years ago) link

hmmm

42R or 42S? that has the potential to look too baggy on me unless it's S

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 19 August 2013 20:37 (ten years ago) link

just a plain ol 42

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:38 (ten years ago) link

cv - suit width is the hardest thing to tailor, so you did right in passing it up

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:39 (ten years ago) link

I mean, the chest

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:39 (ten years ago) link

argh, that's gonna be too big for me ;_;

brb, growing 4 inches and eating a pie

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 19 August 2013 20:40 (ten years ago) link

suit jackets tend to fit differently ime - like i have a few nice suits but if i wore the jacket with chinos or jeans it'd look weird. a blazer and a sports jacket are kinda interchangeable to me tho i'd have said sports jacket was more used to describe more patterned pieces.

didn't know blazer in english sense meant double breasted.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Monday, 19 August 2013 20:40 (ten years ago) link

shoulders are the hardest i think! i was told the only thing that really matters is getting the shoulders right

max, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:40 (ten years ago) link

made the shoulders narrower. also made the armholes smaller.
as I understand it.
lengthened the sleeves.

trouble is I need like a 38 long, which never exists. this tailor seemed to suggest that if I get something too big (so at least the jacket is the right length), he could narrow the correct parts.

chinavision!, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:40 (ten years ago) link

pretty sure "sport coat" is, by defn, single breasted for manoeuvrability when shooting pheasant/reading blogs. other than that, yeah, no idea.

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:40 (ten years ago) link

suit jackets are different insofar as they are actually made as part of a suit ie with a matching pair of pants made from the same fabric? but i dont think theres like an official Tailors Union this is how a suit jacket fits and this is how a sportcoat fits

max, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:41 (ten years ago) link

the problem is that if I get an off the shelf jacket with the shoulders right on, it probably means the whole jacket is too short.

chinavision!, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:41 (ten years ago) link

once you're getting up to 600-700 + tailoring it might be time to start looking at m2m?

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:41 (ten years ago) link

yeah cv i was gonna say, having met you in person you might need to go the m2m route

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:42 (ten years ago) link

yah there is no jacket in the world that fits me off the rack so i have to get everything tailored but this is what i aim for

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link

i am also a 38/36 and all the jackets that fit on me would look ridiculous on you cv!

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link

dyao did you ever do m2m in HK?

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link

I would google "m2m" but I somehow suspect I would not find what you guys are talking about

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 19 August 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link

ok follow up: anyone know how much that starts to cost? I mean if I had to splurge but got something very ideal in return (that I could use forever), I'd consider it.

chinavision!, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link

no, agreed. tho i think with more trad suits the jackets don't work quite so well on their own, whereas with more modern or hipster brands the suit jacket tends to be cut so they can sell it on its own.
