At the end of the day, BOC produce music. Nothing too wonderous really. It's not like they deliver babies, or feed the starving. I like them as good as the next guy, but I am so bloody sick of the slavish following and "ooooh what could it mean" type shit

Spunky Onions, Monday, 12 September 2005 14:14 (eighteen years ago) link

boc produce... music?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 12 September 2005 15:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Mmm... listened to this one all the way through today. Must say that no tracks really stand out except Chromakey Dreamcoat, and even that song after a few listens has gotten old and lost it's appeal. I think the main thing I have to say about this album is it's just a major down step in quality and real emotional songwriting. It sounds like someone trying to be Boards of Canada who sucks. I also dislike the excessive silence in the last few tracks. There just isn't enough concrete BoC melody and addictive beats. It's very simple, quiet, and dramatically less thoughtful, calming, and interesting. Not enough intrigue, not enough originality, and what's with those lame guitars? I'm sorry but this album sucks, in comparison with BoCs other albums and electronic music in general. Any one of Venetian Snares album has more thought and feeling put in to one track than all these tracks combined.

Curtiss, Monday, 12 September 2005 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Another complaint... Does anyone else hate how a lot of the songs fade out? What happened to the seamless instrumental interlude transitions of MHRTC and Geogaddi. Man I so friggin disappointed and I don't think I've ever built an album up as much as this one.

Curtiss, Monday, 12 September 2005 16:26 (eighteen years ago) link

DAYVAN COWBOY.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 12 September 2005 16:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I think that it sounds less creepy, which always seemed affected and pretentious to me, as if they were just baiting the fans who read too much into it. Maybe there's an eerieness that's lost? I don't know, I'll listen again, but I really really enjoyed it this weekend.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 12 September 2005 16:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm wondering why you would have built this one up so much. I mean, Geogaddi wasn't a huge departure, were you expecting something radically different? I guess I'm not clued in to what the die hard fan's expectatings were for this one.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 12 September 2005 16:48 (eighteen years ago) link

i can't figure out if i like "dayvan cowboy" or not! i think maybe i would be more receptive to it if it was by a different band. i find the strings very trip-hoppy, which is something i thought i'd never ever say about boc, much less in 2005!

"peacock tail" is still my runaway favorite, with "slow this bird down" a distant second.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 12 September 2005 16:58 (eighteen years ago) link

it has a number of trip-hoppy moments, i find.

there are some things i actually think BOC have gotten better at with this album (does 'dynamics' made any sense here? a more controlled and carefully deployed use of filigree 'fx', at any rate), which makes its failings all the more frustrating (more than any backwards-run creepiness, i still feel it's just missing CHUNK)

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 12 September 2005 18:39 (eighteen years ago) link

(btw referring to any part of any music as either filigree or fx offends me as much as its likely to anyone else)

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 12 September 2005 18:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Don't go hatin' on This Mortal Coil! (perhaps an interesting compare and contrast actually with BoC)

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been listening to this album for the last week. For me it falls between MHTRTC and Geogaddi. I like it 100 times more than 'Geo', but it does't touch 'Music', mostly due to the lack of that eerie mysteriousness that hit the right spot on MHTRTC and Hi Scores EP (but was overdone to the point of self-parody on Geogaddi aka "the Leslie Neilson album" imo).

This quote hits the nail on the head:

So, as everyone should do, I got very stoned and listened to this album with friends.

It's called "1.mp3", has no tags, runs 4:58 -- and I like it! So what's the ID?

christmas lights (christmaslights), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 03:25 (eighteen years ago) link

i think this one, besides a few tracks here and there, is godawful boring and made me go back and appreciate geogaddi even more. i never really found any of their stuff that eerie or mysterious to begin with, but i thought music has the right.. was cheeseball esp. considering all the lame hype surrounding it, and all the idmers waxing poetic, etc..

amon (eman), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 03:40 (eighteen years ago) link

i love the leslie nielsen sample.

Cd sounds nice on one listen, though it does sound like boards have made their "moon safari".
You won't escape this album over the next 2 years.....it'll be piped everywhere.....

roy, Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:42 (eighteen years ago) link

whatever, if i was stoned and walked into a coffee shop and heard this music playing, i would ask what it was.

especially DAYVAN COWBOY!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:51 (eighteen years ago) link

how are we 100 percent sure that this is all actually boards of canada?

ben, Friday, 16 September 2005 03:43 (eighteen years ago) link

because some of us have ACTUAL REAL PROMOS

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 September 2005 04:00 (eighteen years ago) link

i like Chromakey Dreamcoat a lot, the rest of the album seems like a grower maybe, haven't heard enough yet. i think each record they do, the drums get less intrusive (the one thing i always liked least about boc were the clumpy and too foregrounded drums).

it is funny, how a new album by a band, can make a previously "mixed response" type album seem better than it did before, with so many (self included) picking out the many good parts of geogaddi (agreed, particularly, about the leslie nielsen sample)

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:54 (eighteen years ago) link

has anyone trie playing these songs backward or anything like that?
or have you listened closely to what the voices on the album are saying
i believe that they are a bit harder to decipher on this one
