only thing i don't like about this album is RZA saying "fuck the freckles off your face bitch"

usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 August 2013 18:09 (ten years ago) link

he was terrible on that James Blake track. has he had any decent guest spots in the last few years?

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 22 August 2013 18:20 (ten years ago) link

xp yeah. in real time as i heard that phrase at first i liked it but realizing it was gonna be a refrain i was all :\

johnny crunch, Thursday, 22 August 2013 18:26 (ten years ago) link

Nah you see that's Bobby Digital and not Rza

Hooks on Phoenix worked for me (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 22 August 2013 18:45 (ten years ago) link

lol

usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 August 2013 18:50 (ten years ago) link

also i think it's kinda charming when there are little parts of verses or phrases or w/e that i can hear exactly in MF Doom's voice, just perfectly Doom

i don't really like RZA on their just in concept, i don't want famous guest appearances on earl's shit, i like how it's all insular and crew-only (like early wu-tang actually!) even though i get that rza is probably a touchstone for these guys

usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 August 2013 19:51 (ten years ago) link

s. cloverlandthug (The Reverend), Thursday, 22 August 2013 20:52 (ten years ago) link

the way he's used tho feels more like a dropped-in sample (even if the recording is original) than a real guest appearance tho. even if it still doesn't really work.

s. cloverlandthug (The Reverend), Thursday, 22 August 2013 20:53 (ten years ago) link

everybody loves this album. in case you didn't know. ann powers was raving about it today on facebook! i haven't heard it yet.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:08 (ten years ago) link

is this actually out in stores? would buy i think. i need something new.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:09 (ten years ago) link

this is good

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

Record is boring and underwhelming. It's the Lincoln of 2013 rap albums, a prestige effort that was pedigreed into good reviews, but that even critics who bestowed it with high ratings won't feel passionate about in a year

Evan R, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:12 (ten years ago) link

Honestly I'd rather bump Yeezus, even if this record has 3-4 cuts that could maybe rate a year end tracks list for me.

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:18 (ten years ago) link

how is this a "prestige effort"? what does that even mean

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:20 (ten years ago) link

nevermind i don't care

Prodigy/Alchemist shaping up to be the best rap album of the year for me

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:21 (ten years ago) link

too bad we can only like one rap album per year ;_;

s. cloverlandthug (The Reverend), Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:21 (ten years ago) link

I'm guessing "prestige effort" = "preemptive sacred cow"

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:22 (ten years ago) link

Haha rev

now THAT album i love. i have a beautiful original pressing of it. so magical. and strange in its way.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:30 (ten years ago) link

i think whether this is disappointing or not kinda depends on whether you are viewing it as a dusted weird underground rap record or an "event" album like watch the throne or good kid, m.a.a.d. city....

the spin review was otm in saying that earl's profile in the press has kinda meant this album has expectations that it wasn't created to meet

like it should be judged alongside ka's the night gambit or something not kendrick or drake or w/e

usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 August 2013 22:16 (ten years ago) link

Chum, whoa, Sunday, Burgundy, maybe one other

But I don't regret buying the album on itunes

but helgo otm

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 22 August 2013 22:32 (ten years ago) link

i like em both for different reasons, i like the sloppiness of the whole earl album

usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 August 2013 22:44 (ten years ago) link

i feel like the entire Odd Future aesthetic was painstakingly carved out of all the little corners of the history of hip-hop production and lyricism that i have absolutely no affection for

some dude, Thursday, 22 August 2013 23:22 (ten years ago) link

haha yeah i like it!

D12 f/ MF Doom produced by 2007 Pharrell sounds like a good time to you huh

j.k. but i guess i don't hear the pharrell as much, feels much more kinda like i said stone's throwy...some of the beats remind me the percee p or guilty simpson records

everything I do is funky like Debussy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 August 2013 23:52 (ten years ago) link

yeah i haven't heard all of this album so maybe the skateboard p vibe is not heavy on it

some dude, Thursday, 22 August 2013 23:56 (ten years ago) link

i've probably listened to this about twenty times through now, it's good.
good look with the axelrod samples too

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 23 August 2013 03:13 (ten years ago) link

was looking forward to this, but am also finding it a bit boring - lacking the puerile guignol and malignant mischeif of the first album (or the turns on Radical, Blackenedwhite and Earmilk). Earl's voice is still captivating, just find his manner more limited than before. Hmm, listening now and not sure that's fair, maybe it's the music - will give it more goes - still find that early OFWGKTA stuff fascinating and it's great to have a new Earl LP.

Just one thing, and he's in no way alone in this - wish he wouldn't do that thing having a go at 'the critics'. Go the MES route and NAME them - yr enemies - otherwise it's meaningless and also slightly laughable for someone so generally critically praised.

Fizzles, Friday, 23 August 2013 06:13 (ten years ago) link

ok, fair enough!

OTM. This ruins, for me, what should have been the best track on the album.

Also, second half > first half, "Chum" and "Burgundy" aside.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Friday, 23 August 2013 18:13 (ten years ago) link

there's also this way that RZA has of almost pronouncing words like "freckles" like "fweckles" but he doesn't quite do it and it's this weird imaginary letter that's between "R" and "W" that only RZA knows and it sounds like shit to me

adam, Saturday, 1 December 2018 16:45 (five years ago) link

really love this! have to admit that i'm a sucker for the madlibish production style anyways and Earl is such a great lyricist imo

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:35 (five years ago) link

well sht I might have to get this. I'm always irked by albums with no track > 3 mins. But usually those are like 70+mins long tho anyway!

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 6 December 2018 16:46 (five years ago) link

The singles didn't grab me on first listen, but they sound better/make more sense in the context of the album as a whole. It's not really an album of "singles."

days of being riled (zchyrs), Thursday, 6 December 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link

ten months pass...

new 7 track halloween release with black phillip on the cover, sounds like offcuts from some rap songs and that suits me fine

ogmor, Friday, 1 November 2019 13:17 (four years ago) link

last three tracks are all genuinely great, better than anything on some rap songs imo
