German review here: http://www.taz.de/1/berlin/tazplan-kultur/artikel/?dig=2013%2F08%2F09%2Fa0171&cHash=25dbaa62005b660386d52debfe1a501a

Apparently it was shut down late on (23:20) because of noise complaints from neighbours.

Lame!

The Falcon 7" is hilarious and quite good. The B side really is AOR!!!

The Arkhamin Kirvasto is pretty great too. The guitar guy Samae Koskinen from AK is a member of Falcon it seems, or at least for now. So there are 4 guitar players here!? Crazy!

I just ran across this excellent Jussi interview about AK on their facebook page:

http://www.metal-observer.com/articles.php?lid=1&sid=4&id=19240

"I am a fan of actual physical records, and remember well the time before the internet when people sent letters and cassettes to each other. On the other hand, I am excited that information can now be transmitted and shared so fast, and I have found lots of interesting music via internet. One thing has not changed, though: one has to listen to the music. It is not enough to have it in yellow folders and have read a wikipedia page about a genre or artist. You have to want music, so that it can strike you with its million volts."

Both sets in Berlin were fantastic! The small venue was like a finnish sauna, the drummer had to take a couple of short breaks to get some fresh air. The first night was stunning: Janne Westerlund's solo gig followed by AOR-Circle. Circle (or should I say Falcon) played both new and old material: 'Beer and Ribs' from the new single, as well as 'Point' from their second single. I think Janne had a couple of new songs in his solo set.

Pharaoh Overlord featuring Hans-Joachim Irmler was beyond awesome on the second night! They played some songs from Horn as well as earlier material. Absolutely fantastic! And yes, police knocked on the door after about 50 minutes, 1 hour and told them to stop. Apparently someone had complained about the noise. It was already past 11 pm, probably around 23:20 as Krakow said. They wanted to play one more song (Revolution, I think), but decided it was best not to argue with a police officer. Fantastic gig anyway!

Agreed! That 7" is so much fun. I am beyond stoked for the full length which should be arriving any day, I think.

I did just receive my new 3/4 sleeve baseball style Falcon (ex-Circle) T shirt. It is very funny and sorta swank-looking, ha. Also got the Aktor 7" (Jussi, Tomi Leppanen and a metal singer/songwriter from USA) and the new fake Circle LP, will listen tonight and report back.

liam fennell, Monday, 2 December 2013 13:04 (ten years ago) link

Any idea on when the Falcon full-length and that new fake Circle full-length are going to be out for sale? Still says "coming soon" on Ektro and nothing on Aquarius or NWOFHM, I'm getting super anxious.

The new Circle's Incarnation is a great album. I'm still conflicted over Falcon (ex-Circle) and Frontier.

NWOFHM! Overlord (krakow), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 14:05 (ten years ago) link

The last track on Incarnation sounds to me like the new Circle's take on the old Circle. It comes out well. The preceding, all-out-metal tracks are top notch and really interesting too.

NWOFHM! Overlord (krakow), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 14:11 (ten years ago) link

I don't know what to make of Incarnation, ha. I have to learn to listen to it, it all sounds very monotonous and muddy to me on first listen.

The Aktor 7" is pretty amazing, very highly recommended. Really well written pop metal songs with tons of interesting and prominent synth parts which are given equal weight to the guitars. The singing is exceptionally good, too.

liam fennell, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 14:55 (ten years ago) link

I love the Aktor a-side, super pop metal indeed.

Circle come back to USA!

Seriously when are the Circle and Falcon (Ex-Circle) albums going to get released? So anxious to hear them. I've seen a few reviews of Incarnation so I thought they were getting close, but seem to be perpetually "coming soon" on the Ektro website.

Both "Incarnation" and "Frontier" are out now! From Ektro's newsletter:

============================================================
Circle: Incarnation LP & CD ***OUT NOW!!!***
============================================================

LIMITED LP VERSION
-150 x solid silver vinyl (only at Ektro webshop!)
-350 x black vinyl

The discography of CIRCLE is as vast and winding as the legendary Finnish band's history: From blissed-out quietude to teeth-gnashing noise and virtually everything in between, CIRCLE have done it all, and always with their characteristically quirky charm. Now, that very same quirkiness extends to the band's actual moniker, as they've recently "loaned" it to other bands and musicians while they're meanwhile exploring cosmic AOR and soft rock in Falcon (ex-Circle). The first fruit of this unusual alliance/dalliance is appropriately titled Incarnation. From the first seconds in and onward, it's readily apparent that this Incarnation is quite a different CIRCLE. Sure, CIRCLE have done plenty of loud/aggressive/"extreme" records before, but never have they been as brutal 'n' burly as they are on Incarnation. Fittingly, the members of "this" CIRCLE have deep roots in the modern Finnish death metal underground; the names of their current or ex-bands aren't necessarily important. An
d yet, par for CIRCLE's course, the downtuned 'n' devastating death metal across Incarnation isn't "just" the death metal that's so common to the nowadays scene, but rather is taken to more unusual, often-hypnotic ends, with textures and tempos quite uncommon for the genre. The result is record that's inviting and beguiling in equal measures, but is exciting and defiant at every turn - hail the new Incarnation!

CIRCLE on the album Incarnation is:

Rami Simelius
Ville Valavuo
Tommi Sookari
Markus Hietamies
Jussi Rajala

============================================================
Falcon (ex-Circle): Frontier LP & CD ***OUT NOW!!!***
============================================================

LIMITED LP VERSION
-150 x transparent red vinyl (only at Ektro webshop!)
-350 x black vinyl

Foreshadowed by the hit single Beer and Ribs, FALCON (EX-CIRCLE) continue their ascent to rock 'n' roll heaven with their full-length debut, Frontier. With a dazzling array of textures and tempos, FALCON (EX-CIRCLE) take the listener on an instantly addicting journey through lazer-beamed AOR and soft rock, with more than a few nods to hot-rockin' weekend rock. Stained-glass synths soar majestically across pulsing beats and power balladry, anthems for one and anthems for all, heading out on the highway with the top down and the sun in your eyes and the wind in your hair. Appropriately, the song titles themselves explore timeless themes like "Miami Tits," "Vegas Sundown," "Leather Seat," "Ace of Hearts," and of course the mandatory "Beer and Ribs." This is music for the Everyman, and also for the greater good: unapologetically populist arena-sized sounds beamed in from outer space. Frontier will take you there; hitch a ride with FALCON (EX-CIRCLE).

FALCON (ex-Circle) on the album Frontier is:

Janne Westerlund
Julius Jääskeläinen
Pekka Jääskeläinen
Samae Koskinen
Tomi Leppänen
Mika Rättö
Jussi Lehtisalo

Hmm, I guess they are available now direct from Ektro. Thanks (xpost)

Has anyone from the U.S. ordered directly from Ektro? Is it relatively easy? Reasonably priced?

I usually end up waiting for Circle (and side projects) stuff to show up Aquarius or somewhere and order from them.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 19:01 (ten years ago) link

I always order from Ektro via paypal so it is easy enough. Shipping takes about 2-3 weeks, I live in Philadelphia. I'm still waiting on the Falcon stuff but my copy of Incarnation and the Aktor 7" came a few weeks ago. Just recently a pretty ridiculous 25% sales tax got added so now it's prob best to send an email to Aquarius and ask them to put you on the list for the things you want, then when the actual albums arrive they'll hold them for you and let you know so you don't have to keep checking.

My total from Ektro for the Sennssses and Hollywood LPs was 52.50 euro. 14.50 was shipping and 7.35 was tax! But these are the "limited" versions only available through Ektro and I cannot resist, ha.

Well, I really dig the Falcon Frontier album! It's crazy, and very funny and retro, perhaps a bit campy but in a very positive way. It's all very convincing and performed with a lot of conviction. This is not cynical music and I love that. And it really is all straightforward power-metal-pop with consistently interesting songwriting. It is much more pop-oriented than any Ratto ja Lehtisalo album, which is interesting.

The energy does flag towards the end of the album, and while it is well sequenced maybe one or two instrumentals would have helped. The final song features more conventional singing (4th guitarist/producer Samae Koskinen?) and is a curious addition as it's the only song not sung by Westerlund. Every song does have its own unique twist and sound pattern that keeps things fresh. The production is very clear and the wigged out effects found in more traditional Circle efforts are mostly put aside in favor of epic singable melodies, hard rock riff interludes and the occasional heavy metal solos. The sole exception is perhaps the 5th song Vegas Sundown which is a hell of a song and mostly instrumental - the second half is very trippy and Goblin-esque with disembodied synth arpeggiators over the riffs and also striking piano bass note punctuations.

I suspect one's appreciation of the album rests almost entirely on one's willingness to suspend disbelief and also on how much one appreciates Westerlund the singer. I for one appreciate his work very much. No matter how conventionally pop-oriented the songwriting is, his delivery is always off-kilter and raspy. His unusual voice helps the music retain more than a bit of strange tension in contrast with the fun faux-80s glam metal fireworks (which there are a lot of!)

This is the real stuff, it is just dressed up a little funny and asking some hard-to-answer questions!

I need to do a close listen of the Circle/Mammifer collaboration still but my initial impressions are positive. It is definitely better than the Split Cranium thing, which was kind of a disappointing release.

liam fennell, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 15:48 (ten years ago) link

Really anxious to hear the new Falcon and Circle records. I ordered them from Aquarius, but they were instantly out of the Falcon and I have to wait for a new shipment to come in before they send my order.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 4 February 2014 16:14 (ten years ago) link

So Ssennssess is pretty aawweessoommee. Anyone less than pleased with the Falcon Frontier and Circle Incarnation releases should be quite into it. Seems to be all new songs/themes, not even anything from the (superb and SUPER recommended) Six Day Run LP. Largely improvised, but built on riffs/drumming and not a freeform journey into chaos like the similar recent live film soundtrack cassette album Suur-Pori.

The Circle/Mamiffer is better than expected. I'm not really a fan of Aaron Turner but his presence here isn't felt too strongly, luckily. It often resembles the best drone parts of the Old Man Gloom records, particularly the Seminar 2 & 3 albums. There is indeed a lot of organ and the overall atmosphere is ritual/mystic. A worthy release although crediting just Mika and Jussi as Circle is dubious! Ratto ja Lehtisalo ja Mamiffer is more accurate!

The Hollywood 2xLP is very handsome and the album has been expanded to contain the entirety of the 2006 Earthworm cdep (instead of only 2 of the songs like the Hollywood cd version) which is a nice bonus!

liam fennell, Monday, 17 February 2014 13:55 (ten years ago) link

Really anxious to hear Ssennssess, of course my package with Incarnation and Frontier is finally supposed to show up at my office today.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 17 February 2014 14:37 (ten years ago) link

Ha, at least the new Aquarius shipment came fast! I remember waiting months and months for AQ things before I figured out how they operated and started emailing to ask what was actually in stock before placing my orders! Hope you like the Falcon and have an easier time with Incarnation than I have had. A friend who is actually into death metal tells me it is really good, ha. I'm taking his word for it at the moment, still being a bit bewildered and out of my depth as a listener!

Have you heard the Six Day Run LP? I'm starting to think it might be the best thing they've done this decade even if it is sort of a throwback to Prospekt or something... like they are saying, "We can still do the propulsive motorik instrumental thing as well as anyone when we want to!"

One thing interesting about it is it is almost all in weird time signatures but the band has such impeccable technique that it "reads" as straight-forward. You only notice when you start counting and marveling at the economic way the instruments all weave together to create the rhythms. This is an old Circle trick (the most impressive example to my ears being the first song on Forest, which if I remember correctly is 8+7 grounded by a steady 4/4 percussion) but it's nice to have a concentrated album, no matter how short, that seems to explore the concept at length. The first song on the Pharaoh Overlord Palmu LP also does this to marvelous effect with an impossibly groovy 9/4 featuring drums staggered in a way that they almost sound backwards (and is a song Circle plays live!)

I guess Meronia is 20 years old this years. Crazy!

liam fennell, Monday, 17 February 2014 15:57 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I've heard mixed things about both the Falcon and Circle releases, but I can't not get 'em.

I haven't heard Six Day Run yet, I don't really have the time, money or energy to chase down the vinyl releases and I think I missed out on that one. I do really want to hear it though, I've heard great things.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 17 February 2014 16:18 (ten years ago) link

Understood, this is by far the only music I care about that much. 75% of my vinyl records are Circle things, ha. I really hope it gets some kind of cd release eventually, it deserves it. I know a lot of people will miss it otherwise. A lot of the best Circle and related things sort of end up being unjustly super obscure just for that reason. Sometimes I think they do it on purpose!

Now waiting for: the new Ratto ja Lehtisalo 7"

Six Day Run makes a pretty good companion piece to Lunar Jetman, they're both instrumental and overloaded with killer guitar riffs!

Liinu, Thursday, 20 February 2014 13:46 (ten years ago) link

So the Falcon album is actually pretty fun! I was a bit hesitant after hearing some early thoughts on it and more so after reading the lyrics, but its actually not that huge of a departue. I mean, yes, it basically is '80s corporate cheese rock, but there's so much of the Circle feel in there - especially in the twisting riffs and the keyboard sounds. I like it.

Only halfway through Incarnation so far, it's not shabby either. To be honest, I totally thought the whole Falcon (ex-Circle) and Circle (ex-Falcon) thing was a way for Jussi to play with different groups, even the name Incarnation hinted at it just being a "new incarnation" of the group. So part of me is genuinely surprised that this is a whole new group of people.
