I was trying not to jump on dude without knowing the whole story but this is indefensible... oh man...

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Friday, 20 February 2009 02:28 (fifteen years ago) link

dude..

over

Surmounter, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:15 (fifteen years ago) link

man this shit is sad as hell

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:16 (fifteen years ago) link

as the cliche goes, america loves to forgive. i could see dude coming back okay after a serious apology, a tv interview and a year or so off

THE_REAL_BLAP (J0rdan S.), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I still kind of feel bad for dude, I don't think this should end his career even if I'm not his biggest fan... but yeah this is just sad.

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago) link

no, I don't see him being forgiven for this. Not by white people at least (no offense).

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago) link

woah

on some charter shit no doubt (Curt1s Stephens), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago) link

at the very least, dude is/was one of the last truly bankable stars left in pop, so yall are crazy if you think the label is gonna give up on him. he'd have to be the 20th 9/11 hijacker or something to be done forever

THE_REAL_BLAP (J0rdan S.), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:18 (fifteen years ago) link

dude, he is totally expendable. they'll just get another r&b dude who's cute and put the chris brown money behind him.

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:19 (fifteen years ago) link

i dont think this is the kind of shit he can come back from. im not sure it should be either.

i mean not to compare abuse to using a prostitute, but its like the same kind of hypocrisy between his image & reality that happened w/ spitzer ... u cant be a golden boy pin-up good guy R&B artist who just happens to beat the shit out of chicks on the side -- folks forgive a lot of stuff but im pretty sure his career is effectively done. i just cant see it.

i mean kells kept going but ... i dunno. this feels different. & evident, and obvious.

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:20 (fifteen years ago) link

lolby o'donis xp

this is silly man. some dude on soulstrut tried to argue some similar shit. im from an irish catholic family, not being cool w/ domestic battery is not a 'white people thing'

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think his career is entirely done, I just think his career as a big pop crossover star is done.

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:21 (fifteen years ago) link

(fwiw if anyones confused there was not abuse in my family but i knew plenty of ppl who had stories abou that shit going on ... its a 'cultural thing' only in the broadest sense & exists across all demographics)

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Kells didn't pee on one of the biggest music stars in the world. People find it easier to forgive a transgression against someone they don't know than against someone they do.

The Reverend, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:22 (fifteen years ago) link

it sucks to say, but i think this is way worse for him because it's rihanna. if he beat the shit out of some no-name girl this would blow over way quickly, but this is gonna be a thing for the first 100 times that rihanna appears in public. and if she has any permanent scars or w/e he's 100x more fucked

THE_REAL_BLAP (J0rdan S.), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:23 (fifteen years ago) link

xp xactly

THE_REAL_BLAP (J0rdan S.), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:23 (fifteen years ago) link

tru, plus im sure some folks are more forgiving about 'consensual' post-pubescent teenagers (unacceptably imo but it is what it is) than just straight up unconsensual abuse

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:25 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean like always i want to withhold judgment till we know the whole story but if he did that to rihanna he should do some fucking time

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i dont mean to imply only rihanna--if he did that to anyone, he should do time

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:26 (fifteen years ago) link

for really tho

The Reverend, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i do think yall are underestimating america's propensity for forgiveness -- i mean dude is gonna have an apologetic press conference where he cries, he's gonna do a huge interview on abc or something, he's gonna go on a tour speaking to kids speaking out against violence, he's gonna apologize some more, he's gonna go away for a year or so and then he's gonna come back with a "fun" single like "kiss kiss" and life is gonna go on

THE_REAL_BLAP (J0rdan S.), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:27 (fifteen years ago) link

or he ends up getting on drugs & slowly killing himself & ending up on some where are they now? bullshit like bobby brown

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:28 (fifteen years ago) link

we need to stop saying "dude"

also i don't see how you could feel bad for him right now.

Surmounter, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:30 (fifteen years ago) link

is someone feeling bad for him?

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I still kind of feel bad for dude, I don't think this should end his career even if I'm not his biggest fan... but yeah this is just sad.

i think this depends a lot on whether or not it goes to trial, how long the trial lasts, what rihanna says abt their relationship (isolated incident vs. pattern of abuse for example), past girls coming forward to testify, etc.

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:32 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't know about whether or not i feel his career should be over, but uh, i just can't feel bad for him right now

Surmounter, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:32 (fifteen years ago) link

my bad i missed that, yeah surmounter otm

imo this is a really sad situation -- i only feel bad in the sense that im sure this is part of the cycle of abuse & at some point he was knocked around or brought up to believe that was an appropriate way to deal with his problems. Which is really fuckin sad, but now id definitely say im not feeling much sympathy for him beyond that -- at a certain pt folks need to take responsibility & figure out whats right & whats not. his career is over ... and it probably should be

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:34 (fifteen years ago) link

well sorry for having a more nuanced view of this than "omg he's evil he should rot in jail". I mean obviously what he did is terrible and indefensible but it's sad that this is his undoing considering how talented he is and how promising his career was. that's all I'm saying.

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:35 (fifteen years ago) link

look man i still listen to miles davis and ike turner & we all know the stories behind them ... but honestly how can you listen to a track like 'forever' & not have this taint the way you hear it?

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

i think anyone who does that to someone is kind of evil, and doesn't deserve much of a nuanced view :/

Surmounter, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

there are better places for this kind of discussion but deej is right--people arent born abusers--and its sad that this is case regardless of how talented & promising chris browns career is.

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

i just wonder what goes through your mind when you're hitting someone like that.

Surmounter, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:41 (fifteen years ago) link

― gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, February 20, 2009 3:36 AM (2 minutes ago)

Because I'm capable of divorcing the artist from the art? I mean, David Ruffin is one of my favorite vocalists.. he beat Tammi Terrell to her death practically... obviously no one can defend that, but I don't stop listening to his music because of it. His personal life doesn't detract from his talent. But anyway this is a different argument, maybe you can start a thread about it.

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:42 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, i can understand that divorce. i mean, i think music is meant to be divorced from a lot of things in life.

im not gonna get into this rite now so this is my last word on it for the moment, but most fans are invested in cb's persona as a 'real' thing & this is kind of a wizard-behind-the-curtain moment. i think u are definitely the exception to the rule if you can have that kind of cognitive dissonance

ok im done

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link

interesting.

"bite marks"

he bit her?

ugh @ that facebook douchebag

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:50 (fifteen years ago) link

well also cb's persona is being a smoove and romantic guy so violently assaulting a pretty girl is basically anathema
