he has 10 walks in the last 13 games. the league should be afraid if he keeps it up.

I think his WAR pro-rated is still higher than any position player--3.8 in 63 games going into play today.

clemenza, Saturday, 17 August 2013 01:28 (ten years ago) link

depends which you use - trout's on pace for 11.0 fWAR (through 119 games), puig "just" 7.7

k3vin k., Saturday, 17 August 2013 01:34 (ten years ago) link

I go by Baseball Reference. I'm on that site all the time anyway.

clemenza, Saturday, 17 August 2013 01:37 (ten years ago) link

so per this morning's BP podcast, a lot of "writers" are worried that Puig's "lack of discipline" will cost the Dodgers postseason games! Backlash sure can be funny.

http://www.baseballnation.com/2013/8/21/4644214/yasiel-puig-dodgers-mistakes-errors-fielding-running

Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 August 2013 15:05 (ten years ago) link

Didn't read the article but I'm pretty sure if they don't bring puig up they wouldn't even be talking about postseason games

ω (carne asada), Thursday, 22 August 2013 15:55 (ten years ago) link

Hmmm, I wouldn't go that far... he's a 4-win player? That doesn't account for the lead over the Dbacks right now, unless you believe he Makes Players Around Him Better (TM).

Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link

you can basically boil it down to hanely and puig

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

they've both been key to the turnaround, sure, but let's not flirt with Shannon Stewart Syndrome.

Puig and Ramirez are exceeded in WAR by Kershaw and Ryu. Or Kershaw and Paco Rodriguez.

Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:28 (ten years ago) link

Agree with that. Puig's arrival (June 3) and Ramirez's return (June 4) were almost simultaneous. The Dodgers have been 50-20 starting on June 4. (If you wanted a counter-argument, they didn't start winning immediately: from June 4 to June 21, they were 6-10. That's when they took off.)

But I do believe that the arrival of certain players can spark a team in ways that can't be measured, sure, though not in the way Morbius dismisses the idea.

clemenza, Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link

Dodgers big turnaround was stabilizing their rotation with Kershaw-Greinke-Ryu-Nolasco-Capuano. They had 8 starters going into the season and were on their 9th in about 2 weeks. The bullpen turnaround with the intro of Withrow and promotion of Paco and Jansen to higher leverage situations staunched the bleeding there. Hanley replaced mendoza line production from SS. Puig made up for the complete absence of Kemp, and Either started hitting higher than .220.

zvookster, Thursday, 29 August 2013 01:52 (ten years ago) link

I think the lack of playoff races is making the media desperate for stories. This one has developments every now and again but at its core its stupid and boring. if he still plays like a dingleberry and hits .350 nobody will care

Interesting "Hey Bill":

Who would you rather have, Puig or Bryce Harper?
Asked by: Steve9753

Answered: 9/11/2013
Not sure. To me, Puig is in a line marked by Vladimir Guerrero on the one end and Jeff Francoeur on the other. He's certainly out-played Harper this year.

Puig's been great, but long-term, I sure would feel a lot safer with Harper.

Weird that four voters thought him ROY, but not outlandish, I guess--6.3-5.0 isn't that big gap in WAR. If you look at historical context, though, not to mention Cy Young stats for a team that lost 100...

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 03:48 (ten years ago) link

I'm being silly. When you think about how much of an early jump Puig had, and all the attention he attracted, 26-4 is a very reasonable result.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 04:04 (ten years ago) link

puig would have been a deserving ROY in a lot of other years (and in the AL this year). and i generally think the gap between him and jose has been overstated

twist boat veterans for stability (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 12 November 2013 04:10 (ten years ago) link

I agree--after a moment's thought, I realized I was doing the kind of nitpicking I hate. Also, Fernandez made up so much ground the last month, credit to the voters for not freezing the vote in August.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 04:16 (ten years ago) link

not that fernandez's season wasn't historic, of course. but puig had a pretty insane season (or 2/3 of a season) too, 4th in the majors in wRC+

twist boat veterans for stability (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 12 November 2013 04:20 (ten years ago) link

The interesting question is, in light of how mercurial Puig's season was, and weighing that against how much of a roll of the dice young pitchers are, who would you rather have going forward? Puig's about a year-and-a-half older.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 04:28 (ten years ago) link

definitely puig, mostly because he plays every day and like you said is less of a gamble than a young pitcher. he's not just going to forget how to hit, and his walk rate showed a pretty steady improvement over the course of the summer. i feel pretty good about him being a star

twist boat veterans for stability (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 12 November 2013 04:33 (ten years ago) link

also he's got so much defensive talent, i think once he grows up and settles down a bit he'll be a definite plus in the field

twist boat veterans for stability (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 12 November 2013 04:34 (ten years ago) link

Didn't realize Grant Brisbee had a column on that question just today:

http://www.baseballnation.com/2013/11/11/5090124/rookie-of-the-year-yasiel-puig-jose-fernandez-wil-myers

Will second this: "Still, never pick the pitcher. Although it's really, really tempting in this case."

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 04:55 (ten years ago) link

ok i'll take jose

mookieproof, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 05:00 (ten years ago) link

If "going forward" means the next ten years, I'd take Puig, but if it's the next five years (i.e. until free agency) I would probably take Fernandez. Great pitchers are a lot harder to find and develop.

On his home run, Yasiel Puig said he thought he got enough to hit it out, but then "I saw the outfielder saying 'I got it.' I guess the wind helped me a little tonight," he smiled. Then asked if this is the most fun he's had playing baseball, he joked, "I've had fun since 4 years old."

He came up in an e-mail response on James's site today. Where is he? What happened? How can a 30-year-old who hit 24 HR and had a slash line of .267/.327/.458 when he last played two years ago not have potential value for someone? A little erratic, true, but he never really had a bad season, and I would think his flair and enthusiasm would be clubhouse positives.

Federal prosecutors today also filed a plea agreement for former MLB player Erik Kristian Hiljus, 49, of Panorama City, who agreed to plead guilty to two counts of subscribing to false tax returns and will face up to six years in federal prison upon entering his guilty plea. Hiljus was an agent for Nix’s illegal gambling business but did not work with Puig.
