You can use any guitar amp as a bass amp. It will simply sound like shit if it's a combo. Big tube guitar heads make fine bass amps -- IF YOU ARE USING BASS CABINETS.

Also y'all owe me major apologies for saying I was being a jerk on that one pick-up thread.

Hey i told my dad to buy a 40 watt bass amp off ebay for me.. he then saw a 50 watt guitar amp for 10 dollars more thought it was a bass amp and bought it instead... after searching around aparently the thing that get's wrecked ultimately is the speaker.. so i was wondering if or how much a basss speaker would cost to get put into this amp..
or alternitavly i could just sell the guitar amp and buy a bass amp...

STOP RIGHT THERE MAN! I started this thing a long as time ago, theres no way out, most of the people are idiots on this thing. And there is no solution to putting a bass speaker in, its not possible, as for playing bass on a guitar amp, ehhhh, I've been jamming with my guitar amp playing bass for the past month, its insanely quiet and its a 40 watt amp, the speaker hasnt blown, turning on the drive channel to get more volume helps, but it sucks cause bass pickups sound like junk overdriven and they pick up every little sound of your fingers against the strings, EVERYTHING

i just came back to this thread from so damn long ago.

Change the speakers or cab.
Anything else is an alteration of the Center frequencies of the EQ. Stupid expensive.
If you have a loop, run a boost in there. Many amps' preamps saturate too fast for you to even get the full rated wattage!
40 watts isn't enough to get a bass over a loud drummer. You'd need an 810 to get close, and it still won't work.
Buy a bass amp, or at least a bigger guitar head.

I myself run a bass(VI-type, so it NEEDS to be a compromise) though a guitar preamp. It has alot of bass inherently on the clean channel, though so that's....yeah.

If you find a fende M-80 guitar amp, it's a great bass amp that would need a bass cab.

Mike Lamie, you are a stupid motherfucker. Go back to harmony central, or whatever internet pit you crawled out of. LOOK, I AM INTRANET SHOUTING AGAIN, AND THE WORDS THAT I AM SHOUTING IS THAT YOU ARE INCAPABLE OF LISTENING TO PEOPLE THAT KNOW MORE THAN YOU. STFU FOREVER. GO AWAY.

Hi GZeus. Nice to see you here. Nothing you say will penetrate his skull. We've been through this over and over again. Soon, your kindness and information will turn to utter and total frustration, like trying to teach a baby how to skydive.

Mike do you understand the PHYSICS of SOUND? Every SOUND has a FREQUENCY. The BASS frequency is LOWER than that of a GUITAR. A bass guitar...BASS guitar...makes a sound with a LOWER frequency than that of a GUITAR. A guitar amp is made to generate sounds in certain FREQUENCIES, which may overlap but don't encompass those frequencies generated by a BASS guitar. You have three options:

1. Do NOT play the lowest TWO OCTAVES on the bass
2. plug your BASS into a BASS amp
3. JUST DON'T PLAY BASS BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 01:48 (seventeen years ago) link

TWO octaves?
HUH?
No offense, but
A. A bass is ONE octave lower.
B. A guitar amp WILL reproduce the frequencies produced by a bass, but the speakers won't. The EQ just won't work well.
C. Yes, he's an ass.

You are correct! I am a drunken interdouche tonight. Pay no attention.

i do play bass, quite well too. I just have never decided to understand the way shit works cause I dont need to. thats why I have you guys. That whole sound wave tip is the most sense i've heard.

Either way, under the pressure to jam with my band I've been using my 45 watt epi guitar amp on the drive channel so it will be loud, with low gain to keep it clear but boosted. Its alright, but it is quiet enough.

its funny though, now when I turn off the amp, it takes longer for it to shut down, and when I plug in my guitar to it, it sometimes gets weird and the speaker will fade in and out and get weird but its sort of funny

I thought of this thread too a couple of weekends back when I recorded some bass tracks for a friend with a Orange Tiny Terror into my 1x15 cab. It sounded pretty good.

I've been kind of thinking of finding one of these and actually using it with a bass like Leo intended.

Not sure what the diff is.

And Run Into It And Blecch It (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 26 March 2017 21:01 (seven years ago) link

It's the speakers that bear the pain of bass.

I got a '68 Bassman head now. Its really better on a guitar than a bass, but it's got a grind to it that's cool. With the right fuzz you can sound like Cactus on that head, which is pretty cool.
