Eek - my post above was a joke!

Tom, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

(i mean, i'm not gonna outright lie and say that ILM is better than ever, but if it was terminal, i wouldn't still be reading/skimming. i'm still more likely to side with the good doctor though. you lot really can be apologists sometimes.)

jess, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like the LUSENET interface. It's simple and straightforward, no membership hassles, etc. Of the myriad garbage pop cult forums online, the ILM/ILE community is a pretty clever bunch. If you want to see idiocy just check yahoo . They're so appalling it's fascinating. Sort of like reading the Southern Poverty Law Center's monthly KlanWatch report. Anyhow, I used to check in at the warprecords site, but warpnet went down, so I stumbled into ILM by accident one day looking for a BoC forum. Glad to be here.

bryan, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's to do with the composition of the forum:

Aug 2000 - ILM started, attracts only existing Freaky Trigger readers.

Early 2001 - ILM starts showing up on Google. Momus sends half of alt.fan.momus onto the boards, widening range of regulars.

April 2001 - freakytrigger.com gets wiped out, leaving ILM without a central 'focus' so to speak.

June 2001 - ILE breaks away from ILM - some ILE users almost never post to ILM again. ILM becomes more purely 'music' based.

Later 2001 onwards - loads and loads of Googlers find boards, many stick around; Jay-Z/Nas thread; other sites link to ILM.

The change in ILM has been for better and worse. More Google people = a wider range of music interests (eg Bryan the BOC fan), because you get specialists in almost any style of music. But paradoxically the place starts looking more and more like any other Internet music message board, whatever 'identity' ILM had gets more diffuse.

In practise this means as Dr.C says a much higher noise level, fewer great threads - it also means though that some of the stuff I took for granted I've been forced to defend or think through more and that's a good thing.

I think if you'd asked me when I set up ILM what I'd have wanted it to be, I'd have said a community where any aspect of music can be looked at intelligently and open-mindedly, and where you get to hear surprising viewpoints. It surprises me less these days but I think it's still intelligent and open-minded.

The thing is that if there's a decline it's not the fault of new posters, it's partly the fault of the 'old hands' getting tired of making their arguments again and again and getting a bit lazy, tossing off one-liners to comments that 'back in the day' would have got a para or two. Well that's what's happened with me, anyway!

the specific point when ilm started sucking is when i started posting and i apologize.

chaki, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the advocacy thing upthread was a joke (if there is no "influence" there what wd be the point of advocacy yada yada)
the "is it rock?" thing was sort of half a joke, half an experiment => ie there is a real something stuck in my subconscious (abt definitions and genre) that i wanted to quarry at, and haha i wanted you lot to do the work for me => it didn't really work, not least cuz i posted my answers at a weekend when no one else much cared or noticed (sorry, i am feeling a bit g.gossetish abt this i think: eg yr responses have shown me no RESPECT - when actually yr responses exactly reflect the miscuing of the original thread cluster)

i don't even slightly feel ilm is "dire" at the moment, tho i am a bit bored with being mr one-liner myself (and i suspect others are bored with this too: use other modes mark s)

mark s, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think a lot of potentially great threads taper off too soon, largely because they're not contentious enough. Not a diss on the provocative threads (I like 'em) but it's a bit of a shame that a lot of people are only motivated to elaborate on their ideas in an adversarial setting. eg. Jess's complaint that the Mogwai thread is essentially a 'buyer's guide' - it seems to take a lot to motivate people to move beyond this stage, or the basic classic/dud stage, and really grapple with the subject matter.

Tim, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think the boring aspect of the "New ILM" = "people who talk about the bands they don't like (or know much about)".

I've started to censor myself somewhat to avoid this. There are many, many bands about which the only thing I have to say is: "I used to like them more, but I still like a few of their songs." Or "I used to like them, and then I stopped liking them. I've missed their last five or six albums." Why bother really?

Idk why with the short songs poll specifically people seem to feel the need to drop itunes.txt in a thread. Unless one really does believe the TEN BEST SHORT SONGS OF ALL TIME happen to be ten Naked City songs...
