I played Fairytale of New York (in October) near closing time in a nearly deserted East Village gay bar. At which point the (balding bitch) bartender walked over to the jukebox and unplugged it.

Somehow I refuse to feel bad.

One of the few I'm still fond of is Good King Wenceslas.

Oh Ned, I'm amazed.

The best carols are the ones in minor keys: "Coventry Carol", "We Three Kings", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "What Child Is This? (Greensleeves)", "I Wonder As I Wander", etc etc.

Actually I hate all Christmas songs until December starts. Then I love 'em.

There was a man with an accordian playing christmas choons on an accordian outside my Tube station this morning, and I nearly thumped him. Then I realised he was blind, so merely kicked him in the shins instead.

When I started hearing John Fahey versions of them.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I am very bah humbug about Christmas pop songs. It's the usual story: worked in a fast food restaurant over the Christmas period, one Christmas CD, 15 plays per shift, no more Paul McCartney thanks very much.

Also the last few years I've worked in the Fair Trade shop near the Stephen's Green Shopping Centre and the centre blasts crappy Christmas tunes out all over the street from 9am to 9pm. Very annoying.

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" always brings a tear to my eye, though.

I hate Christmas songs. I was never very keen (once past the age of six) and then working in a department store during the Christmas period, with the same bloody songs on a two-hour loop. I still feel real actual pain whenever I hear the Jackson Five version of the Little Drummer Boy.

But there's high comedy to be enjoyed in the video for the Bowie N Bing version, in which a clearly uncomfortable Mr Crosby looks alarmed at the fact that long-haired youth has been allowed to get so close to him, while all the time wondering where he is and what's going on.
