Jeff--just do Trunk Club, like all the other tech dudes in our fair city. I have a few friends who have gone from hack-a-thon t-shirts to looking sharp.

only dogg forgives (Eazy), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 18:44 (ten years ago) link

I've considered it, but so expensive.

Jeff, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 19:11 (ten years ago) link

obvs weve gone pretty far toward things being super tight and fitted and im sure things will swing back the other way

reading the military tuck how-to where theyre like 'obviously everyone understands that you should get well-tailored shirts that fit your body' was sort of lol since i feel like the thing rn is too have oversized, boxy tops that hang loose around the torso although obv if you work at like a law firm or w/e you arent showing up at work with an 80s ralph lauren pastel dress shirt two sizes too big hanging untucked but yknow

password1 (Lamp), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 19:37 (ten years ago) link

all the boutiquey scandinavian shit i see these days feels and fits about a size too big

max, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 19:46 (ten years ago) link

i've def fallen into the oversize, baggy top and skinny bottoms thing without entirely intending to, i remember two or three summers ago i bought a bunch of ugly 90s boxy, pleated shorts from thrift shops and everyone made fun of me, even tho it was kind of a 'look' i never felt super comfortable with it but i dont mind with dress shirts or sweaters and particularly t-shirts. obv theres a comfort level there, esp in the summer, but i think its interesting how odd i thought i looked in the sort of shorts that would've been entirely unobjectionable in the 90s

password1 (Lamp), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 20:17 (ten years ago) link

It's amazing how much my confidence level shoots up when I have a nice fitting shirt. Like at least 47%.

Jeff, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 20:38 (ten years ago) link

yes

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 20:39 (ten years ago) link

haha lamp's pleated shorts post is totally me this summer. i'm really enjoying it tho, feels baller to break from skinny orthodoxy

i actually also picked up a pair of pleated chinos (that basically look like hammer pants) which i meant to roll up to the ankle to wear out but i kept chickening out in the end

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 21:00 (ten years ago) link

i hate baggy top and skinny bottoms though so

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 21:02 (ten years ago) link

xp do it while it's seasonally valid. i bought cropped pants from uniqlo this year and they were great.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 22:17 (ten years ago) link

feel like baggy top and skinny bottoms has been an option for a long time but its kinda more an advance move

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 22:20 (ten years ago) link

the thing w like a shirt that fits good and flat front pants that fits good is it represents an improvement in the baseline understanding of how to be, obvs if yuore a cool dude you can do whatever you want

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 22:22 (ten years ago) link

Yesterday I asked a guy who came into my work where he got his denim jacket from because I really liked it - it was kinda loose and boxy in shape and looked really good on him. It was a jacket from the ladies section of Lands End. So now I am currently having an internal debate about how threatened my masculinity would feel buying a woman's coat, and if I were to, what size it would need to be to fit me.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 11 August 2013 10:46 (ten years ago) link

Is the detail dragonflies? It's pretty, uh, "FUN" and I'd feel weird wearing it down the pub but with the right attitude I'd say it's pullable-offable. Not sure jeans are the right choice to accompany it though.

Please review your choices carefully. (seandalai), Sunday, 11 August 2013 15:12 (ten years ago) link

is there a bigger pic where i can see the pattern? i wish it had fewer buttons and would also be curious where you'd see yrself wearing it.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 11 August 2013 20:55 (ten years ago) link

ah, thanks.

its an interesting pattern if you feel you can pull it of. i do think it buttons too high.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 11 August 2013 21:02 (ten years ago) link

Yeah four buttons is a bit weird actually, not tried it IRL. I think I could wear it casually enough really.

My friends are open minded

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Sunday, 11 August 2013 21:04 (ten years ago) link

My colleagues less so

so i am looking for a couple of things for autumn i wanted to throw out to the group.

first i really want a fall weight jacket, preferably dark green, waist length, just something for 40/50 degree weather that is nice and casual but with some style. i haven't even seen anything that fits what i'm looking for tbh.

second, a pair of dark brown boots with a kind of rugged/outdoorsy vibe that will look good with jeans. i think i am going to pick up these because they're about 50 bucks:

and i currently can't afford my dream version of them:

http://i1359.photobucket.com/albums/q782/braudimusprime/ScreenShot2013-08-12at25000PM_zpsb9b9cb4e.png

any ideas on something else that would fit the bill?

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 August 2013 18:53 (ten years ago) link

I desperately want a pair of shorts made out of the fabric from LG's jacket

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 12 August 2013 18:55 (ten years ago) link

yeah it's actually a great fabric for shorts now that you mention it

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 August 2013 18:57 (ten years ago) link

Like those second boots.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Monday, 12 August 2013 19:00 (ten years ago) link

ya 2nd boots are baller

I am still very lol90s and my first impulse was to look up a Dr Martens analogue

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 12 August 2013 19:00 (ten years ago) link

i like the first boots way more than the second

max, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:40 (ten years ago) link

2nd boots seem neither rugged nor outdoorsy. first ones are more cad appropriate imo. also, go to barbour on newbury for the jacket, they made a business out of p much exactly what you're looking for. oh yeah, you'll need 400 dollars.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:48 (ten years ago) link

despise the 2nd boots tbh

r|t|c, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:52 (ten years ago) link

keep it coming guys, i'd love to be talked out of them

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:53 (ten years ago) link

1st are not bad but kinda... overly mannered?

r|t|c, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:53 (ten years ago) link

for 50 bucks tho it's a goer

r|t|c, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:54 (ten years ago) link

yeah, exactly re: 50 bucks. they are on their way. i'm a *little* concerned about the quality since i haven't fucked with lands end in a long time but we'll see.

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:55 (ten years ago) link

think i'm gonna get these come winter

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Monday, 12 August 2013 19:56 (ten years ago) link

yeah idk about the new stuff either but old lands end is good stuff

r|t|c, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:57 (ten years ago) link

I can't justify getting any footwear at the moment because I've been inheriting lightly-worn running shoes from a friend who trains marathoners and, as a result, buys shoes that he wears like three times before giving them away. I literally have 7 pairs currently in rotation, including two pair of the exact same shoe.

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 12 August 2013 19:58 (ten years ago) link

i agree w/ rtc's last few posts

max, Monday, 12 August 2013 20:00 (ten years ago) link

xp lol free shoes, awesome. what size are you? i bet you have small feet, you are nimble like a small footed dude.

my only experience with lands end is work shirts but i can def vouch for those, i have several right now

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 12 August 2013 20:01 (ten years ago) link

Apparently distance shoes size up; in normal shoes I wear a 9 but all of these are 10 1/2, which have the side-effect of making most of them the most comfortable Nike running shoes I've ever worn (nb I'm never, ever running in any of these)

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 12 August 2013 20:04 (ten years ago) link

lg the black rubber sole feels a little clashy/out of place to me with that leather but otherwise you could kick some ass in those

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 August 2013 20:04 (ten years ago) link

i think it is a dark brown sole?

i actually recently bought proper running shoes solely (pun intended) for comfort, and cos i think i have kinda messed up my feet walking a lot in unsuitable footwear. they are the greatest things, i am so happy.

ive always though this was a good look after watching jamc vids

乒乓, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 01:07 (ten years ago) link

i feel like the boxy voluminous dress shirt looks good with high waisted pants, you get this nice exactly square silhouette, and if the fabric drapes well it can look really clean

乒乓, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 01:08 (ten years ago) link

agree. baggy top skinny bottoms is very classic.

chinavision!, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 01:51 (ten years ago) link

I'm going to a thing tomorrow night and have been instructed to quote "dress to impress" unquote. WTF does that mean, really?

CAROUSEL! CAROUSEL! (Telephone thing), Thursday, 15 August 2013 02:57 (ten years ago) link

Tempting, but it would needlessly obscure my spandex zentai suit, ball gag and propeller beanie.
