i kind of have an irrational thing against slim fit shirts, shit is gauche imo. proper tucking will sort most things fine

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:46 (seven years ago) link

that's what i tell myself when i attempt to cram in this xl ralph lauren forest green corduroy button down i rly like anyway

a shirt thats just like vaguely the same size as ones torso i think is what most people are going for

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:48 (seven years ago) link

http://trendkin.com/blog/how-to-do-the-military-tuck/

unflattering photos but u get the drift

tailor can also have shirts darted if u really insist

idk i tend to buy 90% second-hand so maybe i'm just less demanding / go for a more classic silhouette

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:53 (seven years ago) link

obvs weve gone pretty far toward things being super tight and fitted and im sure things will swing back the other way, like steven alan is selling 'tradiational fit suits' as we speak, but i think generally just having something that is m/l the right shape reguardless of whether its tight or loose is not too much to ask, i mean the thing abt the military tuck is its designed for a uniform which by definition is not tailored

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:57 (seven years ago) link

is "every shirt that I've got based on neck size has been voluminous everywhere else" rly a common complaint then

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:06 (seven years ago) link

ya

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:08 (seven years ago) link

its getting better but for a while there my lord

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:08 (seven years ago) link

military tuck is fine if you're wearing a jacket and not taking it off--was fine at my wedding.

but in a biz cazh environment where your jacket comes off that pooling in the back still sucks. it's the voluminous mall shirt fit designed for large americans.

obvs weve gone pretty far toward things being super tight and fitted and im sure things will swing back the other way

reading the military tuck how-to where theyre like 'obviously everyone understands that you should get well-tailored shirts that fit your body' was sort of lol since i feel like the thing rn is too have oversized, boxy tops that hang loose around the torso although obv if you work at like a law firm or w/e you arent showing up at work with an 80s ralph lauren pastel dress shirt two sizes too big hanging untucked but yknow

password1 (Lamp), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 19:37 (seven years ago) link

all the boutiquey scandinavian shit i see these days feels and fits about a size too big

max, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 19:46 (seven years ago) link

i've def fallen into the oversize, baggy top and skinny bottoms thing without entirely intending to, i remember two or three summers ago i bought a bunch of ugly 90s boxy, pleated shorts from thrift shops and everyone made fun of me, even tho it was kind of a 'look' i never felt super comfortable with it but i dont mind with dress shirts or sweaters and particularly t-shirts. obv theres a comfort level there, esp in the summer, but i think its interesting how odd i thought i looked in the sort of shorts that would've been entirely unobjectionable in the 90s

password1 (Lamp), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 20:17 (seven years ago) link

It's amazing how much my confidence level shoots up when I have a nice fitting shirt. Like at least 47%.

yes

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 20:39 (seven years ago) link

haha lamp's pleated shorts post is totally me this summer. i'm really enjoying it tho, feels baller to break from skinny orthodoxy

i actually also picked up a pair of pleated chinos (that basically look like hammer pants) which i meant to roll up to the ankle to wear out but i kept chickening out in the end

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 21:00 (seven years ago) link

i hate baggy top and skinny bottoms though so

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 21:02 (seven years ago) link

xp do it while it's seasonally valid. i bought cropped pants from uniqlo this year and they were great.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 11 May 2021 04:49 (one month ago) link

I think Ralph Lauren Andrew shorts are 5" but they're pleated with a high waist, you're probably looking for a slimmer fit.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 11 May 2021 04:51 (one month ago) link

Honestly it's not hard to find what you're looking for, I have a lot of them, but I think i mostly got em secondhand

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 11 May 2021 04:53 (one month ago) link

Feel like it's time I treated myself some new jeans. Jeans range massively in price and the fashionable cut of jeans seems to change every few years.
Ordering online for jeans feels hazardous as I know that in the past I've had to try on at least 5 pairs in a shop before finding one that fits just right.
My last pair was a nice charcoal pair from Replay and before that I got a nice blue pair from a company called Neuw (both purchased fairly cheaply at TK Maxx for about £40-£50).

But yeah, without wanting to spend a small fortune, what are people digging these days? Especially interested in jeans available in the UK for under a ton.

I need to find casual pants that are not jeans, I've been in a real jeans rut, but anything else feels like I'm dressing up when I want to just keep it chill

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:17 (one month ago) link

Yep, I feel a bit like that. Especially since I live in a very boho area where even wearing a shirt makes me feel like Little Lord Fauntleroy.

i like han kjobenhavn jeans

lag∞n, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:32 (one month ago) link

the cuts really don't change that much. pedal pusher style short legs have been popular for a little while, looser cuts, but all the old straight-leg and skinny styles are still very much available. i will probably wear 510s or 511s til the day i die.

Topman is good for trousers imo Moodles. Lots of cuts and styles. something like this for instance - https://www.asos.com/topman/topman-tapered-trousers-in-stone-cord/prd/21896431?colourwayid=60307597&cid=30222

ah I forgot you're in the US Moodles

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:42 (one month ago) link

I would not ever front as a fashionable man but: I don't like jeans. I feel fine in chinos year-round, no matter the setting. Banana Republic or Gap or even (gasp) Land's End. No Dockers tho - I am a dad but I'm not THAT daddish.

cardio free europe (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:44 (one month ago) link

ngl, part of my hesitancy with lighter colored pants is that I'm certain I'll end up getting spaghetti sauce on them or something similar

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:51 (one month ago) link

definitely a consideration

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 15:11 (one month ago) link

dark chinos are the way to go imo. i went on a testing spree the other year looking for non-low-rise, non-skinny cheap chinos and landed on everlane athletic cut and lands end "knockaround," tho those have a little stretch in the fabric that reduces longevity

adam, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:49 (one month ago) link

I wore some black Levis branded chinos a bunch this past winter, liked 'em.

I must protest:

"Designer" shirts which are 100% viscose. Can any living human wear viscose without actually wanting to die?

four weeks pass...

Man, I just got two hemp shirts from Marine Layer after seeing their targeted ads for years, and it just feels like the algorithm is too damn good. They exactly hit the sweet spot of "I'm a dad, but I still want to look cool, but I also don't want to look like I'm trying really hard to pretend not to be a dad." And they have the perfect fit for my still tries to stay in shape but a little soft dad bod.
